40 LBS Coffee Bar — Restaurant in Portland

I want to give this place a better review. The staff is friendly, prices are reasonable, it's comfortable to hang out in and the things to eat are pretty good. I can't give it higher ratings because it's brewed coffee is regularly meh. I think another three-star reviewer said the coffee was thin, that sounds accurate. Some of the world likes good coffee and couldn't care less about espresso drinks. If a coffee place sells coffee made from freshly roasted high-end beans and sells brewed coffee for $3+ per cup--this place does that--and yet can't make good brewed coffee then they are letting something go. All places have some off days, and sometimes it's the beans, but I've given this place many, many chances and it's too hit or miss to patronize in a city like Portland where one can walk three blocks and get a stellar cup of coffee. Maybe use a little more per batch or check temperature...

The coffee and service here is always great. I've been here many times because it's a very convenient location in proximity to my work. It does get busy during peak coffee drinking times but the line moves quickly.

I usually order a latte or a decaf latte when visiting here and both are well made. I've never had a bad experience with my order. They also have bagels and yummy pastries and chocolate bars.

They have many seating options, including a very large table in the back. I've attended mid-afternoon meetings here without any trouble finding space for 3 people to sit at a table.

Anyway if you like good coffee for Portland standards and haven't tried this place, you should check it out. If your experience is anything like mine you will not be...

I fail to see why everyone don’t love this place.

The drinks are GREAT. The food, with a gourmet Vietnamese twist, is unique, thoughtful, and really tasty. The pastries are actually perfectly baked and presented. The interior build-out is out of the world with lots of natural materials in tasteful arrangement. And the music! And the wall art! The plants! Obviously someone (or many someones) put a ton of love into this place.

Also, the staff there are smiley and helpful and fun.

I am gonna make it a point to be there much more often.

PS: I am speaking as a professional chef and big time...
