Fish & Rice was the next stop on my sushi tour of PDX with my folks. Every couple of weeks we try a new sushi spot in PDX to enjoy the restaurant's take on this delectable cuisine.

I generally order take out a day in advance to take back to my folks. Service here is excellent. Ordering on the phone was a breeze and the person who took my order was very helpful in deciding what to get.

The shop is designed more like a Cafe rather than a traditional sushi restaurant. It definitely has a fun vibrant PDX vibe. Being in NW PDX parking here can be a bit of a challenge as there isn't any easily accessible street parking nearby. There is a parking lot across the street but I don't think the establishment counts as part of the business shopping mall. I parked there anyway and didn't have any problems.

Even though the place may not be a traditional Japanese sushi shop or Izakaya don't let that fool you. Their sushi is top notch. The fish was fresh and flavorful. Their rolls were also imaginative and tasty. The prices were also decent.

I would definitely recommend checking out Fish & Rice if you are ever in the NW 23rd area. It is worth stopping in if you are craving some...

My Wife and I love sushi and have been tried everything from dives to high end sushi. I hate being the one jerk to have to give a low rating to any restaurant because my sister owns a restaurant and there are some people you just can’t make happy. While that may be true in some cases I was unfortunately disappointed with the food here. Maybe someone was just having a bad day, which I really hope was just the case. The miso was bland, and had no salt in it, and it took quite a bit of soy sauce to bring the sodium content to a normal level. The unagi roll uneventful, paper roll unimpressive, and the last roll, I can’t remember, but wasn’t tasty at all either. I was really hoping this beautiful establishment was going to knock it out of the park, but unfortunately struck out on all three rolls. One roll in particular has so much mayo in it that it overwhelmed the fine and delicate flavors that should have come through. The staff and service was perfect. The restaurant itself was clean and had an extremely fresh ambiance to it. Again I apologize for the low rating, but the food only deserved a one star, while the staff and restaurant itself a five star. The mean being 3...

Edit: Revisited this place march 2023 and unsure if I like it anymore. I made a note a year ago that I would only order the poke bowl next time because it was what I liked the most and it just didn't measure up. I got brown rice and it was really hard and I couldn't chew it. I liked the sauce on the poke bowl, but for some reason the seasoning just wasn't good and the fish was tasteless and rubbery.

The look of the restaurant is adorable though and the puppies were so cute.

King salmon poke bowl ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐-⭐⭐⭐(2023) only complaint is that I wish there was more salmon very rice heavy compared to salmon delicious sauce and loved the toppings (2023) no longer like this, the sauce was good but the seasoning wasn't good anymore

Philadelphia roll ⭐⭐ the salmon was smoked which is ok there was everything bagel seasoning on it which I don't love

Neskowin roll ⭐⭐⭐ might taste better in restaurant (edit - it didn't) was a bit bland to me, thought it would be more flavorful could mostly only taste the cucumber

Unagi roll ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ melts in your mouth sweet

King salmon sashimi ⭐⭐⭐⭐ really good, but loved the poke more so soft, not...

This trendy spot, located just outside of downtown PDX, was the perfect place to cure my poke craving on a recent visit to the city. I ordered a tuna poke bowl, some miso soup, and - of course - my fave: hamachi nigiri. All of the food was phenomenal and fresh. I did find the addition of raw kale to my poke bowl to be unnecessary. While it was a pretty touch of green, I've never seen kale in a poke bowl and it wasn't my favorite thing about this meal. The restaurant itself is bright and full of natural light. Ordering is done at the counter and you then find a seat, where you can watch the sushi chefs working their magic in the open kitchen area. You can also order beer, sake, or wine to enjoy with your meal. The ordering process was a little confusing at first, but the food did arrive quickly. Best bite of the day: that amazing hamachi!
