Climbing to this column is rather difficult, as the paths leading to it are rather steep. The column stands atop a hill in Washington Park, as though gazing out at the great city beneath. There is a neoclassical sense of geometric harmony in the surrounding area: all the area feels very balanced and symmetrical. The column itself is not particularly extravagant, especially if you are familiar with these kinds of towering neoclassical columns in places like New York and London, but the surroundings make it seem quite idyllic and lovely. It is a tribute to the great explorers who came westward and navigated through rushing rapids and difficult weather and difficult confrontations with Native Americans. They would likely be proud of such a column if they saw it today among the towering northwestern trees that now seem to envelop it, all the great, towering Douglas firs and Western red cedars. You can sit here and gays over downtown from the Westside above the buildings towards the river well being graced with the sounds of the lively Rose garden just a short distance below.
