In my reviewing practice I try to never give less than 3 stars. I often feel that low starred reviews are usually from disgruntled rude patrons that want to lash out like virtual Karens. With that being said, I was SO disappointed with the Mayrose.
We had a non-traditional Thanksgiving and we reluctantly decided to go out to eat this year. There was a group of six of us. The Thanksgiving dinner consisted of 3 courses (with about three different choices) and a table full of "sides" for $57.
The atmosphere is great. I love the dark moody atmosphere. The bar area makes you feel like you're in an episode of Mad Men. 5/5 stars for the decor and milieu.
The staff was friendly. They seemed a bit unorganized. A lot of people running food but not enough wait staff. It was Thanksgiving night so I was empathetic to their plight. Despite working on the holiday everyone was kind and did a decent job. 4/5 stars for the staff.
The overall poor review comes from the food. We live in one of the best food cities in the Country and the "Thanksgiving Dinner" we were served was a poor representation of PDX or even basic home cooks everywhere.
First course: Butternut squash soup with fried sage? The dish looked nice and was finished with drizzled oil. The texture was pleasant enough. The temperature was room temp and it was under-seasoned. Baby food has more flavor.
Second course: Turkey! Other options included salmon and prime rib, great alternative options. However, when the plates were delivered, there was so little turkey on the plate that it looked like it was dished for a toddler. It's not a hyperbole, there was less than half a cup of small chunks of turkey drowned in gravy. Everyone that ordered the prime rib and salmon had a more acceptable size of protein. When I asked if there was meant to be more turkey and if I could have more they said they would look into it and I never saw them again. They probably were running low, if that's the case, 86 it.
The turkey came with a cornbread stuffing. Like the soup, it was under seasoned, and the texture was thick enough to lay tile with. An overall horrible bite.
Third course: Pumpkin pie. I have no complaints here. If it was made in house, give that person a raise, if it was sourced then don't change a thing.
Sides: Brussels, sweet potatoes, rolls, and .. maybe some carrots? Brussels were cooked well with nice seasoning. Everything else was mediocre. Something you'd ask your 19 year old nephew to make as a contribution to Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is not an easy night to cook for. Everyone has their own expectations and "grandma makes it better" mentality. With that being said, I think such little care was given towards this meal that it was doomed to fail. I'm hopeful that the regular menu has some creativity and culinary technique because if this is the best they have to offer it won't be long until another restaurant...

This exciting new American Brasserie restaurant is located within The Duniway Hotel and features innovative cuisine in a warmly, spirited setting.
The menu is artfully designed and focuses on local ingredients. Sarah, Mayroses' chef de cuisine, is well versed in a multitude of cuisines and has perfected this menu with something for everyone.
We began with raw oysters on the half shell then enjoyed the roasted carrots and avocado salad, as well as, the pear & apple with kale, blue crumbles and candied walnut salad. The carrots and avocado salad is unique and an incredible mingling of delightful flavors. The kale salad is the perfect blend of sweet and tartness.
For our entrees, we had the ale brined pork chop which is served with roasted brussels sprouts, flamed apples and sweet potato hash.
We also ordered the Smoked pastrami beef rib is served with a pickled mustard seed slaw and it is ABSOLUTELY OUT OF THIS WORLD! In my opinion ,this is a destination entrée and one that diners will come from far away places to experience this culinary delight.
The food and wine were fabulous and the service was fantastic! Our server, Emily was very attentive, knowledge about the menu and wines and friendly. Our runner was quick to clear our table and provide us with additional service utensils and thoughtfully checked in with us from time to time.
Mayrose has extensive beverage offerings that is built on a base of gins from around the world and a full compliment of wines and beers sourced from the bounties of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.
It's an exciting new concept and it's exactly what we need in...
Read moreI ended up at Mayrose because I was staying at the Hilton across the street, which lets you use your $15 daily credit at the restaurant. I actually didn’t use it, though, because my experience didn’t feel worth it.
For a Sunday at noon, the place was pretty empty. When I arrived, the hostess seemed completely disinterested. She seated me without saying much, just tossed my menu on the plate, and didn’t bother clearing the extra setting even though I was dining alone. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but when another solo diner came in, she was way more pleasant to him and even cleared off the extra setting.
Thankfully, the bartender ended up being my server, and he was great – super nice, attentive, and made up for the lackluster start. I ordered the open-faced breakfast club and asked for no tomatoes since I’m allergic. They took the tomatoes off the sandwich, but there was still a cherry tomato on the plate for decoration. Thankfully, it didn’t touch the sandwich, but I wish they’d been more careful.
The sandwich itself was actually really good! The fried egg was cooked perfectly. However, I also got a pancake on the side, and I wish I hadn’t. It tasted like something out of a box, and I could still taste the batter. Overall, next time, I think I’d try the restaurant inside the hotel before...
