Aloha Mark!
I visited Portland a few weeks ago. Since then, I've shared the details of my trip with many friends and family and while describing my experiences, I was surprised to discover that I could not stop talking about your wine bar. Surprisingly, this impromptu visit turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. Now, I'm an easily excitable girl, but this discovery is particularly incredible since I didn't have a single sip of wine---in fact, I drank only water. (I was accompanying my friend—an avid wine drinker and red wine enthusiast)
With that being said, I felt compelled to write you to let you know that despite not being a wine drinker, my time learning about your wine and your story left quite the impression and I think it's appropriate that you receive an honorable mention. Your attention to detail and enthusiasm for what you do was not only impressive, but inspiring as well. Simply, It was wonderful to witness someone genuinely enjoying what they do. Without a doubt, this is the reason why me and my friend found ourselves wishing we lived in Oregon so that we could come visit Island Mana all the time—especially for movie and trivia night! Again, I can't comment on what your wine tastes like, but judging by the reactions my friend had as she was trying your wines and the amount of bottles she purchased to bring back home…I'd say that your passion has resulted in an exceptional product.
I wish you continued success. You mentioned that you're opening up shop in my other favorite place---Hawaii.
Hopefully, I will see you in Hawaii one...
Read moreThe Portland Wine Bar is at the perfect cross section of excellent service, a wide selection of local wines, and good atmosphere. Each person working has their own vibe and brings a different experience to the night. Joe's big smiles and hearty greetings are a good pick me up after a long day. Stefanie's calming presence and idle chatter is a good thing to unwind with. And though I haven't seen Mark in a while, his quiet mannerisms keep the atmosphere light and comfortable.
As for wines, the rosé that was just recently on the menu was a personal favorite, but I'm usually partial to house whites. Mark's labels, in particular Island Mana and The Winery at Manzanita, are always an experience. I recently had the guava wine for the first time and was surprised to find I loved it.
Overall, it's a wonderful place for relaxing after work, maybe even a quiet date or for a small party of five or so. Personally, I consider it my local go to and recommend it to any...
Read moreThis was okay... The place super clean, the bartender super friendly, but the wine.... eh I just was not a fan. Wine is super subjective and I do not want to undermine the hard work the people put in but it was just okay to me. I paid $50 for 1 glass, 1 flight and some popcorn. For $50 I could get a bottle of stags leap or almost silver oak... Also they are stingy on the pours. A standard wine pour is 5 oz, they measure 4oz. A flight is three 2oz meausred pours. I am used to free pours on the generous side and this just was not it. If you understand what you are going to get come here, nice place, friendly people but be prepared to pay the cost for ok wine in downtown Portland with stingy pours. That popcorn was $15 by the way, airpopped, some truffle oil, truffle salt, and a lil bit of cheese grated over a...
