UPDATE: I've lowered my rating for the restaurant because over the last year their sushi quality has been much reduced. I've eaten here for well over a decade and within the last year I've eaten here about once or twice a month. Each time their sushi rice is slightly "crunchy" and packed so tightly in a roll that it loses its delicate fluffiness and flavor. Rice is arguably the most important part of a sushi roll. It needs to be stored and handled with care and not manhandled into the dense bricks they are serving. In addition to the rough handling, experience tells me the toothy texture is either due to being undercooked or has gone stale from improper storage. Out of loyalty I kept coming back and trying again. I've told my waitresses each time I experienced the sub par rice, told them I didn't want my order replaced (I was content to let them use my feedback to make it better in the future), but have yet to see any improvement. In the end, I've become incredibly apathetic towards their food and will go somewhere else. Itto sushi at the Orem mall is 10/10 and you should give them a try instead of coming here.

My wife and I love the Happy Sumo! My one picky eater loves the plain yakisoba noodles. We decided to order off of their website (which looks fabulous) and do a pick up order. When I got to the restaurant, I was warmly greeted. Even with everyone wearing masks you could tell they were smiling and excited to have you there. As I gave them my name for the pickup order, they went and got the general manager, Lacey. She wanted to let me know that their new website was literally just launched as I placed the order. It created a bit of a snafu but Lacey and her team went straight to work to make things right without me having to re order. She made the experience a wonderful one. I got to see some serious professionals do their job and do them well. With Lacey giving assurance that this will never happen again....I fully believe in her and and will most definitely be back to the Happy Sumo. Lacey made it a great experience. And made me a customer for life. -Seth Holweg

The rolls here are satisfying. They give a nice burst of flavor. I’m not a huge raw fish guy but the rolls here make the raw taste like one flavor in a burst of flavors. I also love the dipped and fried rolls. If you are a first time sushi person, make sure you do dipped and fried (vegas, panko popper, etc) because sushi is good - even cooked. I have always been impressed with the staff. Very professional and cheerful and proud of the food they serve. It’s obvious that all of them are sushi lovers which makes a bigger difference than you would think. Also, if you get on their email list, they give you half off a pretty good list of rolls on Tuesdays. Totally worth it. Happy Sumo is a regular place for us.

Got food poisoning after eating here, was told by Happy Sumo it must have been an unrelated cold or virus. Here are the details:

3 families from 3 different homes ate here together at our table to celebrate a birthday. Some from each ate from various shared sushi rolls, and some who don't like sushi ate other items (cooked tempura, etc.). About 30 hours later, it hit - everyone from all three households that ate sushi all ended up vomiting, diarrheic, and very sick for about two days - except for one that was sick for 4-5 days due to food poisoning exacerbating a hiatal hernia. It was clearly food poisoning due to the timing, circumstances and symptoms.

I reported it to Happy Sumo who "investigated" it, and wrote: "we can only deduce that your experience was likely caused by something else and if it has lasted multiple days it may be some type of virus or cold." Yeah, a virus or cold. And only one of us had symptoms for multiple days as described.

Incidentally, it was commented after the meal that something was off, and it was not nearly as good as you would expect for an expensive place (and Happy Sumo is more expensive than most sushi places in Provo).

Everyone makes mistakes, but it is how we handle those mistakes that set us apart. Happy Sumo did not handle the situation well at all. Being brushed off with an amateur diagnosis by upper management who never spoke with us leaves me disappointed and frankly a bit put off. Had this been handled differently, I would have still written an honest review but with a positive outcome.

As it stands, I do NOT recommend eating here, and you roll the dice should you decide to go yourself. You will pay a premium for sure, and hope that you don't fall ill because if you do, it will most like be due to a "cold".

Puhleeeeze. There are a lot of better sushi options in Utah County. Pick one of them and you...

I took my daughter-in-law for lunch here because I absolutely love the Salt Lake location and wow talk about an experience to remember and share. Based on the experience and rudeness of the server I would give 0 stars, but I'm giving the 1 star for the simple fact that the only thing delicious from my lunch was the hot green tea. My daughter-in-law ordered the spider roll and after the first bite mentioned that it tasted funny, so I ate a piece just to see what she was talking about. It tasted overly fishy. Shortly after our server comes up and asks how everything was we notified him that the one particular roll just tasted funny and would it be possible to swap it out. He responded with, well we dont do exchanges, so and plus you ate half of it... btw we ate a total of 3 rolls and there was still 5 rolls left that is no way half and told her she can get something else, but he would have to charge for it. Okay here's the thing back when I was a server whenever a customer told us something didn't taste right or they didn't like it, the best customer service was to apologize and make it right! This guy was clueless and lacked empathy. I swapped out my roll for hers and ate the gross roll, after paying for the meal I let him know that the fish taste liked it had turned and been sitting out for days. He responded with even more sarcasm, such as well if you had let me known I would have gotten you something else! Are you kidding me! Stay away from this place their servers are rude for the price of their sushi you get day, possibly 6 day old fish and over cooked dry rice. I personally will be taking my business and spending my hard earned money at another sushi joint when I'm in the provo area, as I'm sure there are better sushi spots...

We were traveling in the area and my wife had heard about this place because she loves sushi. Things started out really well because we were told initially there would be a 35 minute wait and we only ended up waiting about 8 to 10 minutes. We were waited on within a normal time frame and they took our order. My wife ordered her sushi and I ordered a sweet and sour chicken with tempura style vegetables and rice meal. It really wasn't that crowded and there were several empty tables. They also seemed to have ample people working. I saw at least 8 to 10 out front. Anyway, It took quite a long time for our meals to arrive, maybe 30 to 40 minutes. I took a bite of my chicken and it was cold, The rice and vegetables were cold also. I am talking about they were not even slightly warm. I approached our server and he did offer to have the dish redone. I declined because I was already going to have to wait and watch while my wife ate her sushi and I didn't want her to have to wait for me when my meal finally arrived again. When I declined he asked me what I wanted done. I told him I'm good we'll just have my wife finish give us the check and we'll leave. I think maybe since this place specializes in sushi there's not a really good coordination between the place that cooks their hot meals and their cold sushi. Because I feel my meal, based on the temperature it came out, had set for at least 15 minutes before I got it. This is all good, things like this can happen.. we were disappointed. I would have appreciated at least an apology though. Even though he did offer to recook the meal I never did hear an apology. We might try them again another time. It might just have been...
