UPDATE: Saying “I’d like black beans in my burrito” doesn’t mean what you think it means to the cooks working here. Rather, they interpret that statement as “I’d like pinto beans and black beans in my burrito”. If you don’t want pinto beans, you have to explicitly say that when asking for black beans. How ridiculous is that?
Ordering a churro from this place is a waste of money. They fry their churros so they are harder than rocks and they don’t put any cinnamon or sugar on them. Their churros are just bland, dry sticks of fried dough which are hard enough to cut metal. ———
The online ordering system for this restaurant might be the worst I have ever encountered at any restaurant. Placing an order is no problem, but picking up the order is a complete disaster. There’s a sign that says something about online order pickup when you enter the restaurant. One would think that they should go to this sign to pick up their order. But no matter how long I stand at this sign I am ignored by the staff. So after enough time of being ignored, I’ll go to the counter where orders are placed to say I’m here to pick up an order. The employee taking orders then rolls their eyes and criticizes me to say that I’m supposed to go to the sign that says online order pickup. But I was just waiting there for 10 minutes and no employee even made eye contact with me, let alone said, “One minute. We’ll be with you shortly.” I don’t understand why the person taking orders cannot help me if there’s no one in line placing an order.
Put simply, you have to wait longer to grab your online order that’s ready and waiting behind the counter than you have to wait in line, place your order, and then wait for that order. All the El Grullense locations in and around Redwood City are great, but this one is horrible. I’m going to be avoiding this place until they can improve their online order pickup process. The situation is absurd as it...
Read moreI eat pescatarian (vegetarian plus fish), and there are several dishes I enjoy a lot at El Grullense Grill. My favorites are the Filete de Pescado a la Plancha (grilled fish filet) and the Mojarra Frita (whole tilapia, deep fried, no batter). The grilled fish is very savory, and the whole fried fish is crisp, not greasy, and fun to eat -- we enjoy head, fins and all! These plates include rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, tortillas, large salsa and condiment bar, and a drink. $13 is a very nice price for so much food, nicely prepared. I am not big on rice, so I ask for a double serving of beans instead, which they are happy to do. Sometimes they have hand-made corn tortillas (hecha a mano), if they ask whether you want those, say yes! They are soft and corny. The salsa bar includes pico de gallo with just enough heat, several salsas (the green is very flavorful), fresh cilantro and limes, and pickled carrots, onions and peppers. The atmosphere is like a Texas barbecue joint or a fish-fry shack. The bar has a good selection of drinks at good prices. If you are adventurous, try the michelada - a Mexican beer mixed with lime juice, tomato, and a dash of chile, in a chilled, salt-rimmed glass. It is pretty...
Read moreMy sister and I were visiting from out of town and decided to order from this restaurant through Door Dash to our hotel. It did take quite a while for the delivery. This food doesn't hold up well for delivery orders. The tacos tasted okay and were decent portions, but the shells were soggy. I ordered the buneulos because it sounded like a yummy treat. It was very disappointing. The tortilla was overcooked. It appeared to have minimal honey and no sweetened condensed milk. Other than the top 2 pieces, there was only the cinnamon sugar on them. I tried to call the restaurant. The phone was answered but noone talked to me. It was if they picked it up and set it down. I could hear conversations but was never responded to. After that the phone went directly to voicemail multiple times. It was very frustrating to not be able to have the business make it right. Door Dash is worthless, too. They won't back the businesses that use them, so no refunds or...
