Edit: It’s been three years since my last review, and sadly, the food has shifted toward a more Americanized style. Many dishes are now slightly sweet, the water-boiled beef is overly starchy, and the bold Sichuan pepper flavors have faded. Disappointing to see it lose the authenticity that once made it my favorite.
I've passed by this place many many times driving along El Camino but since parking didn't seem easy I never went, plus our family always preferred eating in downtown Redwood City but WHAT a mistake we've been making!!! If you want authentic Sichuan and northern Chinese fare, this is THE BEST place in Redwood City. My husband was skeptical at first when I told him I wanted to try this place tonight, he thought we were going to have another night of American Chinese food (nothing wrong with that), but he literally couldn't stop raving about how amazing everything tasted once we dug our chopsticks in. All the spicey dishes we ordered were the perfect level of numbing tingly goodness married with just the right amount of heat. The ma po tofu was divine! The moment I had the first bite I immediately thought to myself (YES, this is how it's supposed to taste), the redwood bistro specialty noodles were also uniquely flavourful packed with spices and various groceries. Is this as good as some of the restaurants I've been to in Sichuan? Probably not. But this is the best place I've had in the Penninsula. We used to trek out to Oakland for our monthly kick of Sichuan food but all this time we only had to drive 10 minutes to this place. I'm So so glad we finally came here tonight. We are definitely becoming weekly regulars. I wish I had photos to upload but eating everything happened so fast. I also wish I had some baijiu to...
Read moreSaw it on yelp about this new restaurant. The photos of all the meal looks very inviting. Drove 5 minutes, lucky got a street parking right in front. It's not big place. 2 big round table, 7 smaller tables sits 4. I got the last small table at 12:40 lunch time. Ordered original spicy noodles, lunch special eggplant and chilly oil beef 水煮牛。all 3 items came out within 20minutes. Lunch special came out first. Fast enough for me. Eggplant was on point. Good portion for lunch great price less than $8. Noodles very tasty and chilly beef was pretty good with cabbage base which I love. The only thing is not perfect for me is the food is not as spicy as I would desire.
Service is very friendly and attentive. I was seated quickly. Hot tea and menu right away, cold water available too. Very clean floor, table and plates. Interesting only a folk placed on napkin instead of chopsticks. Make sense there are only 3 tables are Chinese including myself and all other tables are none Asian. Server speaks good English and everyone seems very friendly and enjoy their lunch gathering. So it's not a typical sloppy service you would get from some of the Chinese restaurants.
Overall, even its not spicy enough for me I am still very thrilled to have this new nice restaurant open in my neighborhood so I don't have to drive to Cupertino or milpitas or San mateo. Thank you for the experience, will...
Read moreWow, this place is amazing! I ended up in Redwood City after dropping off a passenger from S.F. and was itching for some good chinese food. I ended up choosing this spot after seeing all the positive reviews. Let me say that the positivd reviews are legit!
I was greeted by the awesome Tina, who was also my server. She was very polite and courteous. Now let me get to the good stuff, the food! I ordeded a Lemon Chicken plate. The side items I chose were soup and fried rice. I didn't know what to expect considering I was getting a plate at lunch special price. I was very surprised at the quality and faste of the food!
I'm very particular about the chicken I eat and I immediately noticed this place uses white chicken meat. The soup was delicious and came in nice little bowl with a matching spoon. The rice had a nice flavor, not bland or sticky, and most importantly... fluffy! The plate was well presented and garnished with a couple slices of lemon. Again, not what I was expecting considering the price I was paying.
Overall I highly recommend this place whether you come during lunch or dinner hours. I've been to many chinese food restaurants in my life and Redwood Bistro will be my favorite from now on. Also, remember to compliment the unsung hero of this place, the chef! He'll greatly appreciate it!
Thank you again to Tina and all the wondedful staff at...
