I was with three friends for dinner after going to the Van Gogh Exhibit in Hartford. There was 4 in our party and we were seated immediately and we’re served chips and salsa and was told our waitress was would be right with us. After a very long while the waitress finally arrived and took our drink order which I asked for a mojito s as bd the others girls followed with their orders She then wanted go take our dinner order which we gave her. After another long while our drinks arrived but soon after so did our dinners. My dinner was delicious and the others said the same thing. The waitress (Jodi) only removed two dinner plates. One of my friends asked for a to go container and it seemed to be an issue with her. Mine you only 1 container was asked for. The rest of us finished our dinners. Which I repeat were all delicious. After another long wait she finally came over and asked if we wanted anything else. I said yes dessert. Well we all ended up ordering the special cheesecake dessert. She said fine you girls made it easy for me. Which we laughed at. Then she preceded to bring over the book with all of our bills in it. Which we put our cards in and I believe one of the girls gave a $50. She then came out with only two and there was no more. I ordered the regular cheesecake menu item. The other three girls ate the 2 desserts while I waited for mine to come. She came over and asked if everything was ok and I said I was still waiting for mine. She said she didn’t realize I wanted it. She went to get and after what seemed to be another 15 minutes I went up to the podium to cancel the order because at that point I was exasperated. Then Jodi insisted that she credited my bill which she had not after looking over my bill. She was very rude to me. Look I’m s good tipper I’ve worked the restaurant field for 35 years. Last night was the first time I did not leave s tip and mine you I start off with 30% and end with 20% if the...
Read moreI used to love On the Border. Their food was always so good. I haven’t eaten at one in such a long time, so I was happy to find one close to my hotel. Unfortunately, my visit to this On the Border (1519 Silas Deane Hwy, Rocky Hill, CT 06067) was so disappointing. When I went in, I was greeted by the host, a kid with a very indifferent attitude. I asked to place a to-go order, and he replied, "Follow me", then led me to the back where one places and picks up to-go orders. This kid, the host, wasn’t altogether rude, he just seemed so disinterested, very aloof. He definitely didn’t make me feel good about being there. The To-Go host, another kid, looked at me as if she had been waiting on me for some time. I told her I wanted to place an order, and she asked, "What do you want?" When I asked if I could see a menu, she simply pointed at a stack of menus tucked behind the register. I must have had a look of disbelief on my face while I searched for the closest exit, because she eventually picked up one of the menus and tossed it in my direction. I closed the menu and gave it back to her explaining that I would be going somewhere else for my dinner. She responded with an all too telling, "Uh!" I was looking forward to eating there again, but I’m glad I was convinced not to. I am sure if this is how the host/hostess act and treat the customers, the "back of the house" cannot be any better. It was obvious from these two that management at this On the Border doesn’t care about repeat customers. I only hope they are a little more concerned with food safety than they are with customer...
Read moreTried this once again. The empanadas starter was very tasty. The dough was crunchy and nice. Beef was well made. The side cheese was unfortunately microwaved as it had a layer of "skin" so that was disappointing.
My Strawberry Margarita was either super watered down or missing the right amount of house made strawberry puree. For a glass as big as i was given i expect a better flavor.
My main course, Birria Tacos was in the middle. The tacos themselves have grease outlining the shells. Holding them is a disaster. The red sauce to dip had a noticeable layer of oil on top which made it unappetizing. As you eat these tacos oil just drips out onto your plate. The only factor i liked was that the beans and rice tasted very nice and helped quell the grease storm i had consumed.
Our server/bartender Riley was there but didnt seem to take much interest. Plates we finished sat with us for a long time. Drinks werent that great. She was very informative and did try to help my friend with an order question. We went at 8:30pm on the 17th so it was not busy at all and we were the only ones at the bar.
All in all this is very underwhelming and not good "Mexican" food. Across the street there is a taco bell and none of their food is this greasy. A local Mexican restaurant would be a solution to this. I have never had this much grease in any dish i have had. If you visit here get something with rice...
