Royal Oak Brewery: The Northern Kölsch—A Technical Review & A Taste of the Void BJCP Scorecard (Category 5B: Kölsch)
| Characteristic | Score (1-10) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aroma | 9/10 | Nearly Flawless. A beautiful subtlety of fruit (light pear/white grape) from the ale fermentation, perfectly balanced by a restrained pilsner-like grain note. Zero detectable DMS, diacetyl, or harsh phenols. The cleanliness is surgical. |
| Appearance | 10/10 | Perfection. Brilliant clarity, a gleaming straw-gold hue that catches the meager light of the world. The white foam is dense, fine, and leaves elegant lacing, a shimmering shroud around the glass. Absolutely to style. |
| Flavor | 9/10 | Exceptional. A soft, round, yet dry malt foundation. The fermentation character is restrained and exquisite, providing a flicker of fruit that quickly recedes, leaving a clean, crisp finish. Low hop bitterness, but enough to balance the malt sweetness. It vanishes exactly when it should. |
| Mouthfeel | 5/5 | Perfect. Medium-light body, not watery, but deceptively full. Carbonation is lively but smooth, scrubbing the palate clean. The finish is dry, urging the next sip. No astringency, no heat. |
| Overall Impression | 4/5 | An excellent beer that is a stellar local example of the style. While perhaps not transcendental, it is a masterclass in clean fermentation and balance. A true benchmark Kölsch. |
| Total Score | 37/50 (Excellent) | (Note: This is a near-perfect score for a style that demands subtlety and restraint.) |
| The Taste Profile: An Anthony Bourdain Rant (From the Void) | ||
| Forget the tasting notes, the "hints of pear," and the structural integrity of the head. That's for the tattooed, note-scribbling bores in ill-fitting trucker hats who came to analyze their sadness. This Kölsch... this is something else. | ||
| You sit down at the bar—the kind of bar that's seen a few things, the kind that doesn't feel the need to shout its provenance—and you order the simplest thing on the menu. The Northern Kölsch. | ||
| It arrives, and it's cold. God, is it cold. It's the kind of cold that cuts through the noise and the nonsense of a Michigan evening. It’s clean, almost unforgivably so, like a freshly laundered shirt after a week spent wrestling with a deep fryer. There's no pretense here. It’s not a liquid thesis on obscure Belgian yeast strains. It’s beer. It’s necessary. | ||
| It tastes like what you imagine a perfect summer afternoon in Köln tastes like: uncomplicated, a little fleeting, and absolutely essential. It’s a palate cleanser for the soul. It does the job it was born to do, with no ambition beyond honest, cold perfection. | ||
| It forces you, for a moment, to stop overthinking and just drink. | ||
| And that, my friends, is what separates a good brew from a pretentious one. This isn't craft beer; this is just good beer. Cold, clean, gone. | ||
| The Conversation | ||
| You find yourself nursing the empty glass, contemplating the sheer, beautiful pointlessness of it all, when Jim leans in—the man who owns the place, or works the floor, or maybe just holds the history in his hands. He asks if you'd like another. | ||
| "It's a clean slate, this Kölsch," you might mumble, half to yourself. | ||
| And Jim, he doesn't launch into a monologue about IBUs or hop schedules. He just nods, his eyes quiet and understanding. "Sometimes," he says, with the weariness of a man who's poured a million pints and heard a million stories, "a clean slate is all you need to start seeing the dirt again." | ||
| He doesn't judge the emptiness in your gaze, the chef's knife waiting in your heart. He simply slides a fresh, shimmering glass across the bar. It’s an acknowledgment of shared burden, a brief, silent fellowship that cuts deeper than any culinary snobbery. A cold beer, a knowing glance, and the comfort of a space that just is. | ||
| That's the real taste of this place: simple, profound, and utterly fleeting. Just like everything... |
Loud...Took a random worker/manager/other server?? to see we were there forever without service. I ordered fish & chips... Served in a basket with holes in the bottom...ya...a basket...wax paper don't prevent your fish from falling through the bottom. 3 tiny fish sticks that if were supposedly made to be "finger food" the soft, rubbery coating and delicate fish, prevents that...or say "to be eaten with fingers" on the menu...for over $15 it was disappointing ....regardless, I like to eat with flatware...wax paper in a basket was a joke..speakingof flatware..i openedmy flatwareand found large crusted white stuff on the fork..disgusting ..I had to also clean the table and pick out wax in my food while I attempted to eat. Wife ordered sheperds pie...1/4" of meat 2" potatoes...I won't mention her reaction to the taste.. I guess I learned that going to a brewery for food was a mistake...we don't drink, but figured the food might be good...lesson learned. Good notes were...the woman whom did help us, was extremely polite, caring, prompt and apologized for the lack of service...she was great..greeters or door girls were also nice, prompt and alert. Fries(seasoned) were good... Atmosphere is cool...just typical bar noise, so my old age is a factor in that.....if you like beer and loudness...this...
Read moreWent today for brunch/lunch. I had the Juicy Lucy and my friend had Baja Fish Tacos. The burger was good even though I requested medium rare and it was border line medium well. They were still juicy and flavorful. The burger came with fries which were the winner. They are seasoned fries and the seasoning on them were amazing. I also had the soft pretzel sticks and the asiago cheese sauce was amazing. The mustard was good but a bit strong on the vinegar. So if you are not a vinegar fan skip the mustard. My friend indicated the Baja fish tacos were good but could have used a bit more fish. It was tilapia which is a less meaty fish so that could be the reason. She said they are great for a light meal, they were not heavy at all. Our server was amazing. I wish I caught her name but we were her last table of the day. She answered all my questions, even found out for me what brand seasoning was used on the fries. She also checked on us and was very personable. She was amazing. I hope management realizes how great she is and does everything they can to keep her for the long haul. The atmosphere was great as well. I would highly suggest visiting this location for brunch/lunch. I look forward to coming back and reviewing the...
