Cafe Zupas — Restaurant in Salt Lake City

My husband and I were excited to visit Cafe Zupas in Sugar House for a nice dinner. We’ve recently moved to the area and have always enjoyed Cafe Zupas at other locations. Unfortunately, this visit fell far short of expectations.

We arrived around 6:55 PM and waited in line for quite some time before being able to place our order. When my husband started ordering, the experience immediately took a negative turn. The worker who greeted him asked, “Is it for here or to go?” My husband responded, “To go,” but she interrupted him mid-sentence to speak to the person behind us, who was applying for a job. She instructed him to move to the front of the line before turning back to my husband and asking the same question two more times.

It felt like she wasn’t paying attention, and her rushed demeanor set the tone for the rest of our visit. When making my husband’s salad, she slid it down the line without fully listening to his order, leaving him feeling dismissed and unimportant.

I ordered a soup, and my husband managed to complete his order, but the worker seemed overwhelmed and apologized, saying it had been a long day—which we understood. Still, the rushed service persisted. My husband also ordered a cake, but when we reached the next station, the worker there seemed annoyed when we asked for extras like strawberries (which we paid for). Even then, the worker appeared to rummage through the batch to give us the smallest pieces.

This was disappointing because we’ve always loved Cafe Zupas and had great experiences at other locations. While we understand that everyone can have a tough day, this visit left us feeling rushed, unheard, and undervalued as customers. We hope this was an off night for this location and that improvements are made...

My family and I have been Zupas lovers since doors opened! The food has always been fresh and delicious! The one thing which has bothered me for a long time is the ridiculous portion control. I don't think we need to super size anything here, but when the employee making the salad carefully picks out pieces of lettuce she initially scooped into the mixing bowl or shakes off mandarin oranges originally caught in the spoon, I think it's skimpy and just plain stupid! We've chosen to overlook this policy and frequent Zupas at least once or twice a week. On our last visit however, the lettuce was NOT clean. I could feel the grit on my teeth with every bite. When my mother mentioned the same issue with her salad, I knew I wasn't imagining it. She finished picking through her salad and I brought the problem to the managers attention. He was very nice about making a new salad for me, after he said they had re-washed the lettuce. I decided to take the salad home since my mother was finished, but when I got home I found the same problem with the new salad. Needless to say, I am really disappointed and frustrated because I love Zupas food and it's been a regular for our family. I was not impressed by this location. I love Zupas but I went to this location about 8pm and was not thrilled with quality or cleanliness. The lettuce they were serving was starting to look wilted and not fresh. The soup had been sitting so long it was caking up on the sides of the serving containers really really bad. Were talking about seriously caking around the rim at least 3/4" thick. Soup was surprisingly very weak in flavor but strangely strong smelling and made me wonder of the freshness of the cauliflower. They did not fully fill the soup cups and portion size for value of money spent was not good. Soups containers were just filled a little over halfway so you felt gypped. They still had an hour before close but the desert container selection was already cleaned and cleared out with nothing available. The store wasn't horribly dirty but wasn't as clean when comparing to other locations. Service was fine but they only had 2 employees running the front counter and register and they needed more help. Parking was an issue too with the complex being busy. I won't return to this location due to the lack of quality control. It's not worth having to fight for the parking for this kind of quality.
