My fiancé and I were excited to try a new French restaurant that seemed reasonably priced. Upon walking in to the restaurant we were promptly seated at a round table near the front of the restaurant. It was quiet and a bit awkward when we first sat down and the dining room was full. The Feng shui of the restaurant is completely off. I know it used to be a donut shop prior but it just has a strange arrangement that I never really could get over. We ordered the escargot and spinach ravioli as apps and the beef bourguignon + duck with both the peppercorn and sweet wine Demi glacé on the side. We ordered the baguette au gratin as an afterthought to mop up the sauce with the entrees. The escargot came out and was honestly great. That is the only reason this isn’t a 1-star review. Hopes were high. The servers and kitchen then had a miscommunication and either delivered our ravioli to another table or made the wrong thing then gave it to that same table - but when the ravioli did come out it was like eating Costco pasta. The sauce was lukewarm and bland - the pasta overcooked and filled with 10% spinach and the rest some cream filler. No flavor was the theme of the dish. Entrees - the beef was dry and not fall apart - the duck came out with the wrong sauce to which they said they would remake it and then just brought out a side of sauce instead. Even still it was sous vided to medium well when I asked for medium rare and the fat had zero crisp or sear. It was like eating pieces of duck jelly with a breast that couldn’t have been more than 4oz of meat. The duck was also drowned in oil and the Potato mash that accompanied the duck was quite Frankly one of the most dreadful pieces of food I have ever tasted. It was like bitter play-doh with a taffy like consistency. I’m getting chills thinking about eating it again. The baguette was literally Mexican three cheese blend hastily melted on pieces of bread. The entire night there was miscommunications and missteps happening from the server and staff and it just felt like amateur hour gone wrong. We commiserated with the table next to us and asked for the check within a few minutes of getting our entrees. This is actually my first negative review I have written and I hope that they can figure it out , but I will not be coming back to this restaurant...
Read moreIn business, the formula is simple: low-margin sales aim for volume, and low-volume sales aim for high margins. This is a well-priced, dare I say underpriced, restaurant with seating for fewer than ten tables. Which business formula are they following? They could make more money, but they choose not to.
The answer to my question is: screw you, come have some pasta, and have a good classic time. A good time in the old sense of the phrase, before “hospitality” became a boardroom term and joy was measured in revenue per cover. This place cares about a good old-fashioned classic time.
This restaurant is European down to its philosophy of life. While Americans worry about shareholder value and keeping our GDP pumping higher than our blood sugar, the European mind pays no mind. Americans live to work; Europeans work to live. Americans always have somewhere to be and it feels like we’ve forgotten how to just be. If America operated on a vibe economy like our chain-smoking European allies, we’d have restaurants like this scattered throughout the nation.
Through the décor and the humble workwear of the servers, the theme here feels like a cozy French country wine bar with its neutral tones and wine-centric elements. Through the eyes of a human magpie, the theme is modesty. The servers don’t talk to you as if they know the difference between a chalet and a château, the menu isn’t complex, the price won’t impress your gold digging date, the flavors aren’t showboating, and the interior doesn’t scream, “you’re lucky to be here.”
And yet, you are. You’re lucky in the way one is lucky to catch the last train before the station closes, or to find an unmarked beach before BlackRock privatizes it. This restaurant will not remain as it is. One day it will be priced into the heavens or locked behind a reservations wall. The only reason it isn’t already is because, for now, it remains a secret.
Come while it’s still great! The calm before the storm! We don’t know what the future holds, I just hope it’s a nice bottle of Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon. Oh and if you find this review too late and it does get too popular to where you’re struggling to snag a table,...
Read moreIt was one of those days when I felt inspired to try something new. As I searched for a fresh spot in the city, I stumbled upon a hidden gem on the map—an Italian-French fusion restaurant that had quietly opened its doors just a month ago. Intrigued, I browsed the menu briefly, and without hesitation, headed over in hopes of beating the evening rush.
Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by a lovely waitress and promptly seated. I took a moment to study the menu more thoroughly and settled on a comforting bowl of clam chowder followed by their carbonara. As I waited, I took in the ambiance—an elegant blend of European charm, where modern sophistication met classic details in both furniture and décor.
The clam chowder arrived first, generously filled with tender pieces of real clam and served with two perfectly toasted slices of bread—an irresistible touch for a self-proclaimed bread lover like myself. Soon after came the carbonara, and I could hardly wait to taste it. Having been spoiled by the handmade pastas of Italy, my standards are high—but I was delighted. While the texture wasn't exactly what you'd find in Europe, the pasta was cooked to perfection and beautifully balanced with a rich, velvety sauce. I finished every last bite without hesitation.
Though I was nearly full, I couldn’t resist exploring their dessert menu—and I’m so glad I did. I chose the strawberry Nutella croissant waffle, which arrived with the perfect crisp and just the right amount of sweetness. It was the ideal ending to a memorable meal.
If you’re in town—or simply looking to discover a new culinary favorite—I highly recommend giving this place a try. A word to the wise: I overheard several guests calling in for reservations while I dined. The restaurant doesn’t accept same-day bookings, so plan ahead. Arriving before the dinner rush increases your chances of being seated, but if you’re planning a visit after 7 PM, be sure to reserve several...
