This is a place for a beer lover and I truly love beer. Every bartender knows the name of most patrons. Every server knows the percentage of the grist and hop bill. The servers talk beer, and understand the craft that goes into the liquid soul we all imbibe. The venues upbeat, modern vibe belies it's obvious reverence for continental European tradition. Tucked behind an urban landscape hides the Uintas looming in the background.
I was served by Bud and B but spoke with most of the employees. Every person took the time to answer my never ending questions thoughtfully and engaged in deeper than necessary conversation.
The beers are very well crafted. I started with a traditional Schnitt of the Kellerbier as would befit such a proud traditional brewery. I then went to a "flight" which B politely informed me would not be able to be served at once because of local laws. I was happy for this as the complexity of even the most light lager was owed it's due time to digest with contemplation. The Helles made it's way well into the slightly darker Rye which B graciously offered tasting notes and suggested second. From there was an easy transition to the smooth, heavily wheat accented leicht weisse. This was my favorite of the evening. True to style as the rest but with a bit more of the "soul" feel.
I ended the experience with the Dunkel served in a traditional dimpled mug. Proper care was given to pour a perfect half liter with a generous head. The color was a beautiful rubyish brown, clear as the blue sky of SLC on a late summer afternoon with no wind. It came with an off-white head that collapsed under its formidable weight. The white dwarf head stayed and left behind a lace as intriguing as any lingerie. Aromas of continental barley bread, a background note of roastiness and the faintest note of noble hops. A bit more hops on the taste with more of that smooth roastiness from the nose. Old fashioned is the operative phrase. Overall a bit more heavy and roasty than I was expecting but not in a bad way. Clean, complex, and extremely well crafted. I'll be back T.F.B. I owe it to...
Read moreTF Brewing has some of the best beer in the state. They excel in German beers and sours, like pilsner, lager, and berlinerweisse, and American beer like hazy IPAs. They'll occasionally brew a stout or barrel-aged beer and they're fantastic as well. The interior and exterior space has a nice ambiance and is well thought out.
However, I've been coming here for ~5 years and unfortunately there are a couple of things they overlook that hurt an otherwise excellent experience. Parking is a mess, and even though I usually bike or take transit, that mess spills over to that as well. The bike rack is tossed into the corner of the lot, not bolted to the ground, and frequently blocked by parked cars. On several occasions it was full and people locked to railings. The owners are not interested in fixing it despite offers of free help. Cars are also parked right in front of the entrance door, making it difficult to even enter by walking.
The other big thing is that they don't handle busy nights well. There's one bar that gets a huge line. They occasionally have servers roam to take orders, but it's super inconsistent. I've left on multiple occasions and went up the street to Fisher, where they have all of these issues well sorted out. It's a shame because I otherwise love the space, beer, and the staff are friendly!
Overall, come here for the beer and vibe, be aware of accessibility issues, and maybe avoid peak times like...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I have been coming to Templin for about 5 years now and it has been our favorite brewery up until recently. There is an employee whose name is âJoleneâ I think, and whenever she is the one checking IDâs at the front she gives me a hard time about my Mexican passport. The first time it happened, she followed me into the bar after already verifying my ID to âmake sureâ the ID was mine. I let it go but it happened two more times so on the third time it happened I finally asked her why she gives me grief every time she checks my ID? Instead of apologizing or explaining, she sarcastically laughed and proceeded to ask me for another form of ID? I told her I had none but didnât see why this is only a problem with her and not any one else? She again laughed and said I âlooked youngâ but if that were true why did she never try to verify the info on the ID with me? If I were using a fake Id I am pretty sure I would not pick a Mexican passport. It feels like harassment at this point, so I did complain to the manager but I just want to warn anyone that comes here with a foreign ID to be ready to deal with discrimination if she is...
