My partner and I are from Texas, and we've been looking for a place that makes authentic breakfast tacos here in Salt Lake City. There's a hipster coffee shop in the area that makes some, and we tried them first, but we got what we expected: overpriced, poor ingredients, soggy, small portions. We called a few Mexican restaurants in the area, but nobody served breakfast tacos. We just about gave up.

I'm glad we didn't. I tried this place, Tacos Garay, as a last resort. They didn't have breakfast tacos on the menu, but when I called they were more than willing to make us some. They even said they made corn tortillas in house!

Simply put: Tacos Garay makes breakfast tacos better than most taquerias from my hometown in Texas. The homemade corn tortillas are mouth-watering. The ingredients are top quality and not soggy or bland. The salsas are so dang tasty.

This little restaurant makes breakfast tacos better than most places back home. If you want real, authentic breakfast tacos, go here. Please, don't waste your time and money at the hipster...

Stopped by after a bike ride for a bacon breakfast burrito (BBB) to go, sub potatoes for rice. It was lunchtime and the tiny place was PACKED with construction workers from all the different projects going on in the vicinity, so it must be pretty good.

I actually didn't get to eat it until 45 mins later when I got to my work location, but I could see the tortilla was still soft and suple and it was boxed up with some tortilla chips and little cups of sour cream and green and red salsas. Salsas were both fantastic; the chips seemed to come from a bag and were kind of blah.

The burrito itself was delicious, but they gave me beans instead of rice or potato! I wanted to compare it head-to-head with a BBB from Rancherito's that was 40 mins fresher, but it wasn't a true comparison anymore...

Still, the one from Garay was good, with a great bacon:egg ratio and good flavor. Even though it's at least an inch shorter and a little less girthy than the one you'd get from Rancherito's, the extra flavor, quality, and WAY better salsa...

I ordered over the phone a dozen of green sauce tamales but Garay only had 10 green so they completed the order with 2 corn tamales, when we eat them the taste wasn't good the tamales were kind of sour, I called the place and the owner told me to come back in Monday and he'll take care of me, well I couldn't come back that Monday and I stop by today, I consumed again and I reminded him and he changed his mind he didn't want to honor his word, I've been consuming this place for a while and I wouldn't say anything if that didn't happen to me. Anyway lesson learned, this Tacos Garay could sell anything even if it goes bad. Btw when you pay your ticket I'd suggest yo you check the amount twice cause it's been more that once that he forgot to remove in the register a soda or some little amount that was there before you come to pay but food is...

I don't give out 5 stars usually, but this place is the best. Starting with the staff, who is the friendliest. The place is super small and I love that. They remain humble and reasonably priced when their competitors are catering to the fad hyped and superficial consumer. These guys seem to remain true to their roots. I hope that never changes. And the food is delicious. Even for a native Mexican, (myself ) who has gone to plenty of places that claim to be authentic, This one surely is.

I’ve been trying a bunch of different taco places recently and this has easily been one of my favorites, if not my favorite. The asada, pastor, and carnitas that I had were all seasoned perfectly and juicy. Other places the meat is too dry or bland. The service and prices are spot on too. I can’t recommend this place enough. Add to it that I can take them to TF Brewing across the street and I’m hard pressed to hit another taco spot.
