I know that a lot of of people love this place. Prices are more on the affordable side- but the food was just not good. The place is very old- which is understandable since it’s a downtown SA staple, but it appears that no upkeep is taking place. The restrooms look eerie and dingy, and the place smells weird. I will say that they waitress was very kind- but I took off two stars for service because a male employee who appeared to be the manager got mad at me when I tried exiting through the door I entered from. Lol. I pulled up the yellow chain rope to try and leave and he yelled at me to exit through the back like a dog 🐶 lol. It was weird- and I don’t know why they chain off the walkway. I didn’t say anything, just noted my personal experience for this review. Okay so the food… rice was good, egg roll and crab ragoon were too greasy, and sesame chicken was more like sesame chicken strips- they were these huge pieces of meat 🤮 Oh and one last thing- food was too salty, too much msg 🌟

My commute home from work has me pass by daily. Went in on Tuesday at about 6 pm. Not sure if they are still practicing COVID protocol, but if you decide to dine in, they will move the chain for you to pass through. All food is served in a styrofoam plate with lids, all drinks are served in styrofoam cups with lids, and all food is served with individualized plasticware that includes your salt and pepper. After reviewing the menu, my son wanted Mexican food and when we attempted to order we were told there was no Mexican food only bean and cheese tacos and nachos. He got the nachos and I decided to order the beef and broccoli and we ordered a side of fish to share. Total came to close to $30. I was a little disappointed in my son's nachos, being that it was literally 8 chips when we were thinking it would be serving of a meal. I will say tho the fried rice was extremely flavorful, and we may be back. Hopefully, they will have a full menu to serve at that time.

My family has eaten here for at least five generations. The service has always been pleasant and quick and the food hot and filling. Staff has remembered various members of my family every time we've eaten there. Sure, the restaurant itself isn't on the best of streets (unfortunately there is still a population of meandering vagrants in the immediate area) but Golden Star does have their parking lot blocked off with heavy iron fences. And honestly the perceived safety of the neighborhood doesn't change their service and the quality of their food. Last time I was here with my family, we got a lot of extras and bought the lunch specials. Altogether, for three adults, our bill was close to $50 (plus tip). We had so much food left over, we didn't even have to make dinner that night! Thanks for always being there to celebrate our family's milestones and memories, Golden Star! Here's to many more years to come.

Have eaten here several times, to see if it actually got better. Sadly, it didn't. First of all, the environment is really hostile, not even including all the vagrants outside. The owner at the register, a man, will stare you down the entirety of your meal. If you take longer than five minutes to order, he will point out your table to your server, and the server will check nearly every minute until you order. And if you're waiting a few minutes for a friend to join you? Good luck. The servers and the owner will give you ugly looks. In addition, your soda refills will cost you extra. Lunch and dinner portions are paltry and sad looking. That's another thing; the food. I'm sorry, but if you're getting everything within three minutes of ordering, that's suspicious as hell. The rice has a horrible texture, and is always lukewarm at best. The sesame chicken has maybe five sesame seeds on the whole plate, and it also will come lukewarm. Ordered the egg drop soup and then my entree, the soup came out in less than a minute, and while still attempting to get a spoon in, the food comes zooming onto the table. We were taking our time to eat, talking LIKE ITS AN ACTUAL RESTAURANT, and before we had eaten 1/12 of our plates, the server comes over with the check, slaps it on the table and says, "Thank you for eating with us". Then the server pretty much ignores you if you want to ask for anything else, which is ironic considering they aggressively try to penny pinch you, you'd think they'd want to add more to your ticket. When you finally do manage to get the servers attention, they seem really annoyed you're ordering anything else. Oh, don't even think of standing up to go to the restroom after eating, even if the other person and all your belongings are on the table, because the servers and owner will move closer to your table. The food is sub par at best, with an undoubted lot of help from Chef Microwave, and the service is honestly horrible. The restaurant is run down and dirty, the restrooms are an atrocity. It seems like the management and staff believe they are working in a fast food setting, the way they try to run you out of the restaurant, and in general are rude. Such a let down, won't...

Had Dinner on 05/22/2018, and was extremely let down by the overall Food Quality. The Server was great, restaurant was clean but the food quality was extremely low. Ordered a Cheeseburger & Onion Rings, which came out in a decent amount of time. The 'meat' patty tasted like it barely was able to pass the legal threshold of being considered "Meat". Lettuce, Tomato, and Bun were decent. The Onion Rings were thoroughly battered but the breadcrumbs tasted days old, had a taste of cigarettes/ash mixed in, yet cooked correctly. Friends had asian chicken dishes but they stated the chicken tasted days old and maybe had been reused from before? Same applies to the Rice, and it's 'crunchy' texture. Pulling out of the Parking Lot(which is completely fenced in per people constantly stealing/breaking into their vehicles) and with the overall experience, I felt like we were punished by trying this place out, as well as maybe having possible prison/jail food. You can clearly tastes the cheap, poor decisions of quality that was ordered by the Managers working here...Tried this once just to see how good/bad it is but please spread the word. This review may not be a joke, but that Food definitely was. Don't know how this place has 4...

Don't do it....just don't! Usually hole in the wall joints are decievably great but not this one. The service was friendly but that is where the good news stops. Food was atrocious... I mean horrible! I tried to eat it,, but could not. Fried rice is simple right, they replaced the egg with a stick of butter.... it was nasty. It is also too expensive, I mean really for the quality it is too much and the prices are buffet prices... but no buffet. Only Chinese food restaurant i have been to that also had Mexican food on menu, which is cool.... but also has Spanish music playing. Weird! They also sell fish nuggets....ummm... what is that? I didn't find out. Cost me 60 bucks for 3 of us to eat and we left hungry because the food was not good. They also serve your food in foam containers which cost more.... so I guess we pay more for that too. This place is also scared of covid... sign in front about it, has chain blocking access to dining room and a staff member has to look at you to see if they will let you in. Then you can't leave through the front... have you leave through a side door like they are ashamed of you...but is a weird covid measure.... that stops nothing!!! Just eat...
