My family has eaten here for at least five generations. The service has always been pleasant and quick and the food hot and filling. Staff has remembered various members of my family every time we've eaten there. Sure, the restaurant itself isn't on the best of streets (unfortunately there is still a population of meandering vagrants in the immediate area) but Golden Star does have their parking lot blocked off with heavy iron fences. And honestly the perceived safety of the neighborhood doesn't change their service and the quality of their food. Last time I was here with my family, we got a lot of extras and bought the lunch specials. Altogether, for three adults, our bill was close to $50 (plus tip). We had so much food left over, we didn't even have to make dinner that night! Thanks for always being there to celebrate our family's milestones and memories, Golden Star! Here's to many more years to come.

I know that a lot of of people love this place. Prices are more on the affordable side- but the food was just not good. The place is very old- which is understandable since it’s a downtown SA staple, but it appears that no upkeep is taking place. The restrooms look eerie and dingy, and the place smells weird. I will say that they waitress was very kind- but I took off two stars for service because a male employee who appeared to be the manager got mad at me when I tried exiting through the door I entered from. Lol. I pulled up the yellow chain rope to try and leave and he yelled at me to exit through the back like a dog 🐶 lol. It was weird- and I don’t know why they chain off the walkway. I didn’t say anything, just noted my personal experience for this review. Okay so the food… rice was good, egg roll and crab ragoon were too greasy, and sesame chicken was more like sesame chicken strips- they were these huge pieces of meat 🤮 Oh and one last thing- food was too salty, too much msg 🌟

My commute home from work has me pass by daily. Went in on Tuesday at about 6 pm. Not sure if they are still practicing COVID protocol, but if you decide to dine in, they will move the chain for you to pass through. All food is served in a styrofoam plate with lids, all drinks are served in styrofoam cups with lids, and all food is served with individualized plasticware that includes your salt and pepper. After reviewing the menu, my son wanted Mexican food and when we attempted to order we were told there was no Mexican food only bean and cheese tacos and nachos. He got the nachos and I decided to order the beef and broccoli and we ordered a side of fish to share. Total came to close to $30. I was a little disappointed in my son's nachos, being that it was literally 8 chips when we were thinking it would be serving of a meal. I will say tho the fried rice was extremely flavorful, and we may be back. Hopefully, they will have a full menu to serve at that time.

I got chicken and broccoli and chicken lo mein. The sauce that came with chicken and broccoli was coagulated and not flavorful. The meat was not seasoned. The lo mein have little to no sauce on it it tasted like it was not tossed in a wok. It tasted like a 18 year olds attempt to recreate lo mein using his mom's pasta and ingredients lying around the house. I've had Chinese all over the country. I've almost never had a bad experience except for this place in fact I've had better Chinese food at buffets. I can't say that they do take covid-19 seriously I could smell the bleach when I walked in and they are doing a good job social distancing. Also it's nice that the portions are large. I'm going to try and jazz up the leftovers with some soy sauce and perhaps do a stir fry.

Golden Star Cafe in San Antonio is a true institution, having served the community for over 90 years. This place is a hidden gem, offering a delightful blend of Chinese, Mexican, and Seafood dishes that perfectly reflect the diverse flavors of San Antonio. The menu is a culinary adventure, with a wide variety of options to satisfy any craving. And let's not forget their takeout - it's top-notch! They have frequent lunch specials and amazing deals that make it a go-to option for a quick and delicious meal. Trust me, you won't be disappointed with Golden Star Cafe. It's a must-try for anyone looking for some hearty food at a great price in San Antonio.

I had to come back and review this place. First of all, this is not a restaurant. It's a pick-up location with bad food, and service was slow. and I will not recommen it. The price is fair, but food was served in a ridiculous tissue plate. Water was charged at .50c We were excited because we were all craving Chinese food, but the ambiance, the food, quantity, and quality was a complete letdown. The manager and server ran after my friends to demand a tip for a bad service. I would usually think that giving tips was out of free will and not under some compulsory circumstances. Except you like bad food, I will not recommend it.
