Once upon a time, there used to be a place here called Ms. Ellie's pizza. It's what I would consider the BEST New York style pizza in San Antonio. Unfortunately, the restaurant closed in 2022 thanks to the owner passing away from covid. In it's place, Sofia's opened. After seeing some media coverage and being openly invited to give it a try, I decided to see it if could live up to what Ms. Ellie's was able to do. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The first discrepancy was the pizza, think crust at first, but comically large crust at the end. Very puffy and thick. Trying to be both usually doesn't work, this hybrid of crust styles would prove to be a negative quality. I went to the counter and ordered a slice of pepperoni pizza, as well as a chicken parm sub. This alone, no drinks or sides, came out to ~$16. The first slice of pizza I was brought was burnt, so I politely declined and asked for an unburnt piece. despite this, the top of the crust at the end of my slice was still burnt. having examined the cross section of the pizza, it became evident that this was not fresh, and was reheated after sitting for some time. Ms. Ellie's also did this, but having a thin crust was advantageous to this. the thick, supposedly fluffy crust at the end of the pizza now resembled a dry and tough web of dough. Not the most appetizing observation. despite this, the cheese and toppings were flavorful. it certainly wasn't a $4 slice of pizza, but mediocre isn't terrible. Then I was served my sandwich, the wrong sandwich. Despite ordering a chicken parm, I was given a buffalo chicken sandwich and was rather confused. I took note of the chicken particularly, it was soggy and flavorless. as if it were a frozen patty that was slapped in the microwave. This would, of course, be the case when I was served the correct sandwich. The cheese itself was very sloppily thrown onto the chicken, and was now half melted, not on the sandwich. the chicken was also still soggy, evidently the entire sandwich was microwaved. For a $10, I was utterly dumbfounded at the lack of quality in my food. Needless to say, I left without finishing. This was quite possibly some of the worst and most overpriced Italian cuisine I've ever had the displeasure of paying for. I am baffled as to how this restaurant somehow was voted the best pizza in San Antonio, when even domino's puts it to shame in terms of both price and freshness. Julian's is right down the street, I'd suggest anyone go there before wasting your money...
Read moreThe food is mediocre at best, portions are small, prices are high for the quality and amount of food you get. Worst part is the complete lack of customer service, disheveled drinks area with broken equipment laying around. Unless you're desperate, I would say, don't waste your time or money at this place. Owner is rude and his wife is even worse, plus she conveniently does not speak English suddenly when it suits her. You're so much better off at Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Little Caesars, Marcos or 7-11 pizza. Seriously folks, if you decide to go, God bless you, but don't say you weren't warned. It was a waste of $30 and still left there hungry. Won't make that mistake again.
You Sir, are a LIAR.....none of what you are claiming actually happened except 1. Our dog is a SERVICE ANIMAL. FOUR TIMES we were asked to show his card (illegal), which we did gladly and your wife even tried to take a picture of it with her phone, we advised her that wasn't legal and read it to her from the back of the card, that's when your daughter stated her mother doesn't speak English although she was doing just fine screeching out orders to your employees just prior to that. Yes, his collar did come off when we were trying to rush him out of the store when you told us to leave....which is also illegal and a right protected by the ADA. Your pizza is not good enough to ever again come back for so truly the loss is yours. Thank you for the lovely...
Read moreFirst time going to Sofia's tonight, eating dinner in the restaurant. Service was very friendly and efficient. The pizza was very good. From our arrival to when we had a fresh hot pizza sitting on the table was about 18 mins. It is New York-style, so cut in large slices and intentionally thin so that it can be folded. All good. We were a little disappointed, though, with some of the smaller things: The restaurant, while clean, including restrooms, is very sparse, with basic tables and chairs and not much else. No real atmosphere, even for a pizza place. For decoration there is a nice wall mural, but that's it. They are clearly on a tight budget, as drinks are all bottled soda or water you get from a refrigerator (no tea, no fountain drinks), you get thin paper plates and napkins along with plasticware to eat your food with. Salads are served in Styrofoam containers intended for burgers. Again, the pizza was very good and tasted great. For most people that's all they need. We weren't looking for anything fancy or extravagant, but do think a little more could be done to make the place a bit more inviting and comfortable-feeling. We like to try new places, and the pizza is recommended, particularly if you like New York-style, but we'll probably try a different place next time we're exploring pizza...
