I went to Hoppy Monk on Saturday around 5 pm. Understandably, they were a bit busy. As someone who used to be in service industry for a decade, I totally understand. We were sitting outside for quite some time without a server ever stopping by. Since I knew they were busy, we decided we would walk inside and grab a drink from the bar. We had planned to grab a drink, close out, and walk back to our table where we would open a new tab. However, the bartender wouldn’t allow it. No “hello,” “how are you,” or “welcome.” The first question out of his mouth was, “Are y’all sitting at the bar or grabbing a table?” We told him we wanted a table, so he said you must order with your server. We told him we were waiting for our server, but no one came by. Instead of just pouring us a drink, he just says “We’re busy.” Then we go back outside (since we had no choice) and waited again for a server. Finally she comes by and takes our order. She tells us “we’re so busy so be patient.” (Mind you we haven’t complained once) In what world do you speak to a customer that way? There are other ways to say be patient like “please bear with us, thank you for your patience, I apologize for the wait, etc.” Additionally, she didn’t know the answer to a question so she stopped mid order to go ask. That’s fine, but our question was about our drink and when she brings it out, it’s wrong. The rest of our experience is smooth except for when I told her that I would have one more glass and then close out. I wait around for my second glass to come out and it never does. She stops by to check on us to see if I want another drink and I told her I ordered one. She tells me “No you didn’t.” We didn’t argue with her. When she left the person I was with told me that I did in fact order the glass. There were several times as a server that customers would think they ordered something and they didn’t. In that situation, I would NEVER tell a customer “No you didn’t.” I would just order the item for them and apologize that I misheard or misunderstood. Sadly, this place has the potential to be great but won’t because the service is horrible.

Management- please teach your employees basic customer service. I...

It was an interesting place I will definitely be going back at least one more time to sample more of their offerings. This was my first time there they're very vast selection of beers from local craft breweries and they have also a nice selection same of Whiskey's and scotches. the food was tasty but a abet a little small and slightly overpriced I had a beef tongue you could call it a pastrami a Reuben sandwich that was really quite tasty it came on a nice marble rye . being a pastrami 10 day cured made of beef tongue it kind of melted in your mouth. I ordered a bacon and egg burger that came on a beautiful bun and it looked quite nice it had a nice aoli in the sandwich the Patty could have been a bit bigger. I think it was too small when you ask for a medium-rare burger and when the patties so small that you can't do a medium rare and it's all brown all the way through then you might want to step up your meat game and it could have used just a little more seasoning but all in all it was a good experience . They served up some tasty fries but they were extra they did not come with the sandwich and again the order was a little small like I said a great beer selection. When I went it's quite hot they have a beautiful outdoor section with games that you can play table Jenga the wait staff was nice all in all a good experience but I will have to go back and taste some of their other food. $70 for 2 people with two beers a piece and that was during happy hour I would say it's a bit on the pricey side. The only thing that could probably make it a bit better would be some happy hour appetizers that could be shared at a lower price than the...

This place is a great restaurant. Every time I have gone I have always had a good experience. The food and beer is on point and the service has always been great. The wings are amazing and I love how they serve local beers from breweries across the country.

I am very disappointed though from my visit this past Saturday. Arturo was our server and he wasn't very friendly at all. He had a scowl the entire time and never once saw him smile. I ordered a vodka soda and asked if they had Red Bull. He acted offended when I asked about Red Bull and told me they didn't serve chain products. Which is fine, I can respect that.

However, he was annoyed and kept up the same attitude the whole time. I asked if he could take a group picture and this seemed to annoy him as well. When we closed our tabs, he handed us the Toast device to fill out gratuity and rate the service. What shocks me is that he has the default gratuity marked as 20%. I can't believe he would start at that when he knows he isn't friendly or attentive. He didn't thank us for coming or anything else for that matter. He took our payment and then walked away without saying anything.

This is a shame as I have always had friendly servers here. Some people just aren't meant for the service industry. Hopefully this gets addressed as this is a...

We came to this place for a nice dinner after a hard day's work and we're completely bamboozled. This is not in fact a bar but an exquisite restaurant masquerading as a bar. Everything from the duchess burger to the wings then the cerviche de cameron tostada was exactly on the same level. Incredibly delicious. There was nothing we ordered that we were not very impressed with and to do that with such a wide variety of food, that is nothing short of amazing. We were told everything is made in house and we can definitely taste the freshness. The cocktails are great and they definitely have a full bar with loads of different liquors and an wide variety of draft beer. Staff were very friendly and place was almost full during the mid afternoon lull when other places are close to empty which should tell you something. For me it's probably in my top 3 restraunts in San Antonio and that is really saying something. Great job Hoppy Monk!

The Hoppy Monk should be on every local and visiting persons checklist! This place is absolutely amazing! If your an advisor beer drinking or learning about beer than this is the spot. They have plenty of options to choose from that one could start from. We recommend getting flight instead of individual beers, that’s where we made the mistake. We’re excited to try the different types they have when we go back. The food on the other hand looked insanely delicious the minute we walked in. I stuck with a hamburger & fries and the wife got a waffle desert. Both were great tasting and would order against. Yet as items were coming out of the kitchen everything seemed to look delicious. We’re excited to go back and try the other options because it was difficult to choose from. The staff was super friendly and helpful in making decisions. This place should be a spot for locals or visitors. Definitely a must!
