Chicken Over Rice co — Restaurant in San Diego

First, just know that I love chicken over rice platters. From any culture/cuisine. You can never go wrong. So I was definitely excited to find a chicken and rice platter in San Diego.

I ordered the chicken over rice bowl with all the fixings (via Doordash) because they do not allow customization on any of the delivery apps they're affiliated with. Leaving a review in hopes the staff sees it and makes a few accommodations to their delivery ordering system at the bare minimum.

The portions are great, especially for the price. They don't skimp on the rice and there was a decent amount of protein and cucumber salsa as well. You can't ask for the sauce on the side, nor can you order extra sauces. A missed opportunity for the business (to make additional money) and for the customer. They should allow you to exclude certain items from your order on Doordash/Grubhub. I could have done without the raw onions. Food is rather bland, I would have loved more sauce (the portion was very conservative, but that may be a delivery standard) even if I had to pay extra for it. I feel like they depend on the sauces to add flavor that should have already been built into the rice, chicken and other toppings. I think the meat is chicken thigh. Great for flavor (compared to say, chicken breast), but there were some chewy, more fatty pieces. I think they could improve the quality of their meat for sure.

I was super hungry when I ordered this, but I ended up not eating much of it because of the chewy pieces of chicken. I probably wouldn't try this place again, but I hope they make some changes because there is so...

Yesterday I went over to Chicken Over Rice Co. to try their famous chicken bowl. Since they’ve been a huge hit on the local San Diego farmers market scene since 2016, I was very excited to experience their first storefront that opened right here in OB earlier this year. They blend traditional Mediterranean flavors with the essence of health and freshness. In their bowls you have the option of rice, salad or pita as the base. I chose rice and then added everything on it (chicken, chickpeas, lettuce, onion, parsley, cucumber salsa, hot sauce, pepperoncini, and tzatziki sauce). It was absolute 🔥🔥🔥!!! 🙏👍 Sooooooo good!! It had the perfect balanced blend of flavorful proteins, vegetables, and grains. Now I can’t wait to try their salad and pita options. I’ll definitely be heading back really soon. *You can also custom order a vegetarian version.

Update 2: Yesterday during the rain I went back over to Chicken Over Rice Co. to try another version of their bowls. With their bowls you have the option of rice, salad or pita as the base. Last time I had the rice bowl and it was delicious! This time I tried the salad bowl and then added everything on it (chicken, chickpeas, lettuce, onion, parsley, cucumber salsa, hot sauce, pepperoncini, and tzatziki sauce). I travel a lot for work and my most recent job, a lot of the clients I worked with would always order Chipotle, and I mean if it isn’t broke don’t fix it, right? Dead wrong. I ended up finishing that job and finalized my move to Ocean Beach when boyfriend and I were walking around down town and I kid you not when I say he says this every, single, time; “ITS CHICKEN OVER MFN RICE!!! LFG BABYYYY!!” … Every. Single. Time. lol

And I can’t blame him. This is what small business is all about. The simple selection that’s consistent every time, that’s healthy, that’s fresh, it’s what counts. There’s always a TON of chicken. It’s juicy, never dry, always seasoned perfect. All the veggies are fresh AF and chick peas and cucumber salad are what I double up on.

Needless to say, there’s no more chipotle in my life anymore, only “Chicken and MFN RICE!” 😂
