Yesterday was a bit of a rollercoaster at this location. I am gluten free by medical necessity, and when the cashier asked if it was a preference or allergy her body language totally changed negatively when I said allergy. I've been judged a lot at establishments in the past for this, but usually only in small towns so that was weird, but I brushed it off. However, when I added a bag of chips she said "are those for you?" To which I was like... Yes?? And she snapped back and "those aren't gluten free" in a rude tone. I then showed her the back of the bag that says in bold "gluten free" and she said "oh I was about to judge you." I was stunned and just stood there waiting for the moment to be over so I can just pay and go sit around the corner. In the past, I once said it's a preference to avoid burdening the staff because I do feel bad but then I got an ulcer in my mouth for four days after which is my #1 sign of knowing I got gluten in my system. So I just tell the truth and say allergy now. But then, the person who actually made my sandwich was so kind and truly went above and beyond in her interaction with me. It was genuinely the worst and best interactions I've had getting food in a long time but it ended on a positive note.
Look, there are three places I can think of off the top of my head where I can get a gluten free deli sandwich in SD. It is so hard to just feel normal and find something tasty and enjoyable, I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Let's say the chips did have gluten, maybe kindly point that out? Ingredients change sometimes and I would have just put them back on the shelf. The sandwich was awesome and clearly made with love, but to be interrogated and met with passive aggression when I'm just trying to avoid being sick and in pain in exchange for an upcharge just to have bread that will never compare to the real thing, is...
Read moreIke's has invaded the Mission Valley area, which is a good thing of course. I ordered the "Terrell Davis" on a whole wheat roll with light mayo for $14.50 plus tax.
The sandwich was quite good. I liked the freshness of the avocado slices, and that it came with a good amount of sliced turkey. The thinly sliced bacon was lost in the mix however. I do recommend that they put a little more of the thin slices of bacon in the sandwich or simply use a thicker more noticeable bacon.
The sandwich also came with Swiss cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce, but they forgot to put the lettuce in the sandwich that I requested. They got the tomato though.
The service was very good. I liked that they welcomed every guest as they walked in. The young lady at the counter who took my order was cool. The place was very well...
Read moreFirst-time visit and really appreciated the kindness of the staff! I stopped by for the first time yesterday and although there was a little mix up with my sandwich order (it got switched with someone elses), the team handled it so well. They quickly apologized, refunded me and kindly offered to remake my sandwich that I originally ordered but since I was in a rush, I decided to eat the one that got mixed up with and it ended up being delicious! Mistakes happen, but the way they took care of it, really stood out to me. I wish I could shout out their names but sadly I didn't ask for their names, I will definitely be back to...
