An Accidental Revelation at La Puerta By Sidd Captures
It’s a rare and beautiful thing when serendipity leads you into the arms of the extraordinary. That’s precisely what happened one unassuming afternoon in San Diego. My original plan had been to patronize Las Hadas Bar and Grill, a nearby establishment that remained shuttered until 3 PM. Out of sheer convenience—and perhaps a tinge of curiosity—I stepped through the doors of La Puerta Mexican Restaurant. Little did I know, I was walking into a revelation.
La Puerta doesn’t just feed you—it seduces you. Its interior whispers stories of rebellion and artistry, where walls adorned with the mugshots of cultural icons serve as both homage and provocation. These images—a rogues’ gallery of creativity and influence—set the tone for what this place is all about: a celebration of boldness, whether in art, life, or the culinary craft.
And oh, the food. If the decor is a prelude, the dishes themselves are the crescendo. Let’s start with the asada fries. A lesser place might treat these as a throwaway bar snack, but here they transcend their humble roots. The steak is tender and flavorful, the fries impossibly crisp under their decadent mantle of melted cheese, crema, and guacamole. Each bite feels like an argument won—proof that comfort food can also be art.
The chips and guacamole arrive next, a riot of colors and textures so perfect they look staged. But this guac isn’t mere garnish—it’s creamy, bright, and impossibly fresh, the kind of dish that reminds you why avocados are called “green gold.” You don’t eat it; you surrender to it.
And then there’s Jess. Servers like her are the unsung heroes of dining out. Jess isn’t just knowledgeable; she’s intuitive, a curator of your experience as much as a guide through the menu. Her energy is magnetic, her recommendations spot-on, and her presence elevates what is already exceptional to something downright memorable.
La Puerta isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a testament to the idea that the best things in life often come when you’re least looking for them. The ambiance—equal parts edgy and inviting—tells you to linger, while the food dares you to rethink what Mexican comfort cuisine can be.
San Diego has no shortage of Mexican restaurants, but La Puerta is something else entirely. It’s where grit meets elegance, where the mundane transforms into the extraordinary, and where an accidental detour can turn into a meal you’ll never forget. If you’ve ever doubted that magic exists, you’ll find it here—served on a plate, with a side of fries, and a knowing smile from Jess.
In a world of safe choices and predictable flavors, La Puerta is a rare find—a restaurant that feels alive, creative, and unapologetically itself. And isn’t that exactly what we’re all...
Read moreUPDATE (09/14/22): We went back after our very negative first experience (see below for original review). We arrived on a Wednesday night around 8:15pm hoping to miss most of the dinner crowd. We had nice outdoor seats on a lovely evening. Service was VERY slow, but it was busier than we thought it would be so late on a weekday.
The food was fine. Our favorite was the Guacamole appetizer (with salsa). We also got the Southern California burrito and Viva Mexico tacos, both were okay but nothing to write home about.
ORIGINAL: I wish I could have tasted the food. The hostesses tried seating us in a high top in the corner near the front, but it was too warm and very cramped asked to take a seat further in. The hostess waved us back to “sit where ever” but did not accompany us. We saw two open booths as we walked back. I walked back to the hostess and asked if we (2 of us) could be seated in one of the two open booth seats. She said one was reserved for large parties (understandable). But when I asked about the other one and whether we could sit there, she said “no” (just “no”) and looked at me with complete disdain. I asked if they were reserved or something, and she said “nope” and smirk-sneered at me, then walked away.
I’m not one to jump to racism, but this definitely felt race-based (I’m an Asian woman, my husband is a white dude) given the circumstances. All of the other same-sized booths had two people in them, all white. Even if my negative treatment was not race-based, the hostess made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable, so we left.
This was around 1-1:30pm. It was NOT a busy evening.
EDIT (08/13/22): In response to my negative review above (from 08/11/22), one of the owners published an unsatisfactory response, including some misinformation. I called the restaurant to speak to her so that I could give her additional information and clarify what happened. (The hostess demanded to know every detail about why I was calling before transferring me to a manager. Once I was able to talk to the manager, Megan, she took my contact to give to one of the owners, who responds to Google reviews.) One of the owners called me back within an hour.
As it turns out, she was indeed misinformed by her staff at the restaurant, which in turn caused her become defensive and lash out at me unfairly in her response to my review. After giving her a fuller account about what happened, she apologized and promised to address what happened with the staff. She also promised to pull down her response to my review. She offered to send a gift card to try the restaurant again, should we feel comfortable doing so. I will update my review if we...
Read moreTo bad it doesn't have the ZERO stars option. My family of 11 traveled on a Day trip to San Diego by train, not knowing the sea or restaurants, out of all the places here we unfortunately stumbled here. As we were Walking by, the restaurant host convinced us to eat there then the nightmare began. Knowing if our large group they tried cramping us in a 8 people table area. We literally felt like a can of sardines so I made a comment of being to right with no space for our food and drinks. Jay the so called restaurant manager heard us complaining and moved us to 2 different tables separating us but at least not sitting on top of one another. The server took a long time to come and after finally took our order. Knowing it would a while to get our food, I decided to run across the street and pick up some food to go after leaving there. I come back in with my treats in a bag and tells me I cannot come inside with someone else's food even though we had just placed about a $400 order of good and drinks he still insistedon not letting me in. . I said ok that's fine, walked to my table kept my other treats out away. I sat there to eat the food from there, then Jay immediately walks very obvious and disrespectful starirng down on my food on my plate. I felt disrespected and got upset showeling him my plate asking him if it was ok. He was very sarcastic continuing to stare at my plate and said yes it's our food. I walked off and decided not to eat their food and walked out. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE COMING HERE... very bad service and the food as very bad knock off to authentic...
