San Diego's No.1 Favorite | Japanese-Style Pasta Eel Pizza

Let me tell you about a little slice of heaven I found in San Diego: Monzu. This isn't just dinner--it's a love letter to Italian cuisine, handwritten by people who truly care. Our maestro for the evening, Alberto, was the kind of waiter you dream of: engaging, passionate, and laser-focused on making your night unforgettable. We started with the house-made focaccia, warm and tender, and a burrata salad so fresh and creamy it could make grown men weep. But then came the main event, the dish that now may haunt my dreams in a very good way: winter squash ricotta ravioli swimming in a gorgonzola cream sauce, crowned with crispy guanciale and toasted walnuts. Sweet, salty, nutty, rich--it was a symphony of flavors that left me speechless. Of course, no Italian meal is complete without wine, and Monzu delivered. The pairing was perfection, the kind of bottle you savor with every sip, knowing you're in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. To Alberto and the Monzu team: grazie mille for the kind of meal that reminds you why food matters. This isn't just a restaurant; it's a destination. Go! Eat! Thank me later...

cozy carb lover at Monzu Tucked away like a secret recipe, Monzu isn’t the easiest place to park—but once you step inside, you’ll forget the parking struggles ever happened. It’s a small, simple spot, The staff? Super friendly, helpful, and clearly know their pasta game. Now, let’s talk about the star of the show: the pasta. Oh. My. God. The texture! This isn’t your typical soft-and-safe supermarket pasta. Nope. This one bites back in the best way possible—chewy, springy, and just the right kind of “al dente.”. Almost like if udon and Italian pasta had a delicious lovechild. 😋 I don’t know if it’s 100% “authentic” by the book—but it did take me straight back to a tiny local joint I once stumbled into in Sicily when I was a kid. That’s gotta count for something, right? And don’t even get me started on the cheese—rich, aromatic, and the perfect co-star to those amazing noodles. Honestly, I didn’t expect to fall in love with pasta all over again, but here we are. Definitely coming back for round two (and three… and four).

Great date night!

Service: Antonio was a great server and had the best recommendations for us. He was very attentive as was the other staff. He even somehow read my mind and brought some red pepper for my pasta dish which I always do at home (was the perfect touch)

Food: For appetizers we got the aranccini and a burrata salad. Loved how big the arrancini was- think giant meatball sized. Flavorful and had lots of cheese and a great crisp on the outside. The burrata salad was good. I love figs so I wish it had a bit more of them, as well as the balsamic drizzle. The burrata was also large (2 of them and we easily ate the prosciutto which was nice and salty. Entrees for us were Carbonara (added shrimp) and Amatriciana (added meatballs). Both were a 10/10. The pasta was very fresh the sauce perfectly coated the pasta and the flavors were really delicious. Carbonara was what my husband got. I tried some and I loved the shape of the pasta as well as the more egg centric sauce vs overly cream based carbonara. Only thing I would add is a little more guanciale if you're a meat lover. My Amatriciana was sooooo good, the freshness of the pasta and the sauce really hit the spot. They used buccatini which I think was a great choice. The added red pepper and 2 meatballs were the perfect addition. Again 10/10 recommend. We got the affogato for dessert and def recommend to share and enjoy the experience of the hot espresso being poured over the ice cream at the table. Wish we had room to try more desserts tbh!

Atomsphere: Lively, colorful yet not over the top. They didn't overdo the "Italian" theme but instead had cute decor that fit a more modern feel. Lots of people at the dinner service but we were seated promptly. I don't remember hearing music but honestly there was so much chatter amongst the other diners so it wouldn't have mattered.

Again try to get a reservation and stick with Antonio if you want good recommendations and a very...

First time customer at this restaurant and I'm glad I was able to leave with such a great experience. My partner also enjoyed their time here which was definitely a plus. Sometimes it's difficult to find the right spot, but when you do, everyone will always have a great time. Once we arrived, our server Jeremy, was very welcoming. He greeted us at the door with a smile and was polite enough to explain what was on the menu before making the decision to dine in. We were sold within a few minutes and were already attracted to the small cozy atmosphere within the restaurant. Jeremy seated us and patiently gave us as much time as we needed while helping navigate through a few items on the menu. I ordered the meatball appetizer and the short rib ravoli. My partner got the margarita pizza. We also paired our meals with two amazing wines that Jeremy selected for us. The food was delicious and the our server's wine choices complimented the flavors. The portion sizes for both of our dishes were perfect. Afterwards, we ordered the tiramisu which was the perfect finish before leaving. We loved how it wasn't the same as you would expect from a franchise restaurant. The tiramisu was very soft, light and had a moist bottom layer that, surprisingly, worked extremely well all together. We will definitely plan another date night at this location. If you're looking for an Italian spot with nice food, wine and an overall chill vibe, this is a great place to check out. A special thank you to Jeremy. Best server we've had in...
