More like rooftop flop. I understand why they need to give free beer cards away to get ppl into the venue. The food is really bland and terribly priced despite being plated so beautifully. My group that came in arent really foodies but we all collectively agreed to never come back here again. I tried the quesadilla and carnitas tacos and it was bland and greasy, the smash burger was super heavy, had no flavor or lettuce/tomato added to freshen it up. Fries were cooked in old oil and hard. The chicken burger desperately needed a marinade or spices for flavor. It tasted like plain boiled chicken..no salt, spice or anything to add flavor to it. The chipotle chicken salad was a bit better (you can't really mess up a salad) and the in house made ranch dressing is hit or miss depending on who makes it. It was different both times we tried it. So the consistency is not there. I've been here three times to give it a chance with two big groups of people. We mostly enjoyed the view. Everyone complained of the food. Unfortunately the service could've been a little better too. We saw people smoking cigarettes despite the signs, and incredibly cramped walkways once people filed in. The stressed out looking servers/bussers were struggling to get through the crowds on their free beer nights. Sad. Another manager turned off another groups firepit then kicked people out. It could've been handled a bit better or in a nicer way. People come out to have a nice night, enjoy the view. Being rude ruins that vibe amd makes it feel very unwelcoming. We tried to give this place a chance and it's a hard pass. The food is too expensive for how awful it tastes. And, not a single dish was sent back. Wasn't worth the fuss but did want to give a heads up to eat elsewhere. We tipped our waitress well, but will not be returning. This has to be the most dissapointing place to eat in San Diego with...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars, I would. Worst bar experience of my life. I went here one evening with 7 of my friends, the youngest of the group being 27. The majority of the group were also military. 5 people in our group got drinks, without being carded. I only got a water. The other 2, one of which was military, were denied service because the employees at the bar swore their driver's licenses were fake, which they were not. The sailor denied service also showed their active military ID, which also proves their birth date, as well as some other information. The employees didn't care and still denied service. We sat there sipping our drinks for about 15 minutes, the 2 others just sat and chatted without drinks since they couldn't get anything. Then, three of the employees stormed over, yelling at our friends to leave because "they are minors and they can come back when they turn 21" even though in reality they are nearly 30!! They then went around and yanked all of our barely-touched drinks out of our hands- even my water!- and demanded we all leave or else they were calling the police because "we snuck minors in." They also fully charged us for our drinks even though they sold them to us, then turned around and literally took them away. Their employees are WAY out of their lane and obviously have NO training when verifying real IDs. Absolute hostile disgrace of an...
Read moreI was so grateful that Borrego Rooftop allowed us to make a weeknight dinner reservation for a group of 11. Located on the 9th floor of the hotel, the bar area is absolutely stunning with amazing views of Petco Stadium and the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. They have comfortable seating with fire pits on the roof to keep you warm. Our server was excellent—very attentive, and handled such a large group with complicated food and drink orders very well.
The food and drinks were fantastic—a bit expensive, but so, so delicious and ultimately worth the cost. Probably the best food we ate in San Diego! I enjoyed the crispydilla appetizer, borrego fried fish taco, and Sonoran sunset drink. Among our party we tried most things on the menu and enjoyed it all. The shoestring fries, in particular, were absolutely fantastic—perfectly seasoned and crispy.
I would give this restaurant 5/5 stars, but we were a bit surprised at the end of the meal to see that we were charged $94 for waters for the table. Aside from being asked at the beginning of the night if we wanted still or sparkling water (we chose still), we were not warned that the cost of waters and water refills would be so exorbitant. I wish they had been upfront with the cost—had we known, we likely would have elected for a cheaper option, or at least declined the refills. Just something to be aware of before...
