WARNING! Please read! Update. Recently, when I walked into the women's 5th floor restroom at this library I was startled by a male transient (goatee) as he exited one of the stalls. as-526180-4430 Without saying a word, I immediately walked out restroom to await his departure. As I did, he uttered angry insults to which I replied "I'm giving you privacy" etc. A male employee (S) arrived with a cell phone. As I explained to the employee that I was merely waiting, the transient became silent and remained in the restroom another 2 or 3 minutes before departing with his bags and his hood over his head. Note: During all of this, another lone male patron silently held a cell phone while sitting inside the glass room, directly across from the women's 645 restroom. 526180

I am almost done as a patron of this library. While I feel disturbed about this verbal incident, I do NOT fault the employees or security. I know there are recent gender laws about public restrooms. Yet, this could be VERY dangerous for children. This transient might NOT even be a patron! In 1998, a transient brutally murdered a 6-year old in a public restroom, Oceanside. A few months ago there was a gun fatality near this library, 92101. Just weeks ago a man was swinging an axe inside a Pacific Beach library (92109) until he shot by the police. Please be careful in all public restrooms!!

Original review 2019: All restroom entrances are left open during operating hours due to security issues. 9102 Even worse, each door to the toilet stall now has a huge hole cut into the top of the door so you have little privacy while using the toilet.

A few days ago as I walked into the women's restroom, there was an old homeless man (beard, backpack and all) coming out of one of the stalls. I immediately stepped out and informed a nearby female employee and security guard. Thankfully they confronted the man who was STILL hanging out inside the women's restroom.

WARNING TO PARENTS: Do not allow your child to enter or remain at this library alone, day or night. Never, ever allow your young son/daughter enter any of the restrooms before you inspect the stalls. This library is just one example of how the increasing numbers of homeless and mentally ill are becoming a health and safety issue for ALL San Diego residents.

This is the main library of the 8th largest city in the U.S. with the ballpark nearby. I am not rich by any means so my comment is NOT intended to degrade the homeless. I hope that EVERYONE will see this is a problem that affects ALL of us. Between our politicians and private builders let us pray affordable housing will be available for all who...

I am appalled at the way the lady with the white hair and glasses had approached me at the reference desk when I had asked her to help me wit h my computer, number 209, becuase the mouse had suddenly froze for no reason for over five minutes, she told me that I was moving it too fast, when I wasn't. I had been filling out job applications and, doing mostly typing, so I has no need to use my mouse that much and also, she said I needed to wait for the mouse to catch-up to me, and I knew that was not the problem and I told her that and she still did not listen to me. I had been waiting like I said for over five minutes and I still did not want to move. I had to reboot the monitor, pressing the circle button underneathe the word Master on the computer, which fixed my computer, but I lost about ten extra minutes that I did not get back The guy named Bob, who had previously been working at that reference desk before her had nicely helped me with a noise issue on computer 206, which I had been previously sitting at. I plugged in my head phones into it to listen to music and no noise was to be heard, he even plugged in his headphones and he could not hear any noise either, the volume was up all the way and the mute button was not on either. We even made sure we were using the proper place to plug in our headphones in, not the hole with the speaker and the picture of the headphones next to it, but the other one, and still nothing! SO he confirmed with me that it was the computer that was the problem and that it might need to be re-booted. And nicely told me to move to 209, shortly before I had the second I-T problem. SO why is it so hard for this lady to understand that it was an I-T issue. She was really rude and made me feel like I was an interruption and an inconvenience to her. Wow..... These computer have had I-T issues in the past and every once in a while they still do. Why is it that she was not able to understand that and talked to me in a rude abnd impatient tone of voice? This is why Bob works here,...

I HAVE NEVER SEEN A MORE MIXED UP LIBRARY IN MY LIFE 1 handicap access is not esasly accessible to front door 2 the first floor don't have any bathrooms 3 the elevators are not side by side, 4 there is only 1 toilet on each floor that could have over30 people 5the elevators take forever to go any where 6 the ceilings are a dingy ugly gray not white 7the colors look like dull dingy on the walls 8 the cielings should have Ben Brite white, 9the walls should have Ben painted Brite cheerfull inviting pastel colors of blue, pink, yellow, lite green, 10 there is so much useless unnecessary over building that made the building way over price, the place looks like dark dingy prison, 11 the front entrance should have Ben on the top of the hill, making quick easy handicapped wheel chair access, if a escalator was put in for walking people why not something for wheel chair people, 12 I am wondering if competive bidding took place, I am wondering who approved this most crazy plans, or did anybody even look at the plans, I would like to see if other plans were presented or was this a closed shop deal, I would like to know how much they was paid, it seems to me under the art excuse you can pad the bill with useless over hangs, $incele$$ gobeldegook, and oh yeah march 2023 I went to a public invited to give your ideas to improve the library and it's like everything I suggested was ignored, 1 paint walls and ceilings Brite white, get rid of useless light blocking cieling over hangs? put the front entrance at the top of the hill easier handicapped entrance, put bathroom on first floor, put more bathrooms on each floor, have elevaters in easy line of sight, have light colored computer keyboards like they have in "the learning center that are a Brite yellow with bold black letters and numbers, so why would they invite the public and ignore every one of my ideas to only make the library more user friendly, what other library do you got to bring in a flash light to see...

Shell of the beautiful library that once was...I used to go to this library almost every day for about 4 years. I remember the growing pains when they first opened, and I watched it become a well oiled machine balancing Downtown peeps, homeless folks & neighborhood patrons. There was space & resources for everyone, granted this was 2016 ish but Workforce Partnership was there along with Mental Health Systems. Fast forward to Summer 2022 post covid, I get off the bus and I'm immediately greeted with a Target shopping cart right at the exit for the bus. No one is around & it seems to be parked without an owner but it is filled with stuff and the closest Target is miles away in North Park. I rush to the 5th floor to make an appointment later in the week with a specialist, the door is littered with signs but also locked. It is not 4:30pm yet, the gentleman behind the front desk just glances at me without consideration. I circle back to 5th floor circulation desk and ask about open computers, he said 2nd floor was a safe bet but couldn't offer me other options. The computer stations were gross, sticky and wet and broken keyboards. I only stayed for 90 minutes because 4 guest around me were yelling, cursing or talking loudly. Security was attentive, but the bathrooms were open which means anyone can walk in and disabled stall has peekaboo door, why?!? Family bathroom is closed, no place to rest your purse or bags and floor is littered with used band aids, socks and debris. I would not go back unless I had an appointment at workforce partnership for help with job placement, vocational school or training. The entire building needs a deep clean, covid spray inside & out.

DO NOT DONATE TO THIS LIBRARY. THEY WILL NOT DO WHAT THEY SAY THEY WILL DO. I am a San Diego native and a local business owner. I donated a rare 1847 volume with double fore edge paintings to the San Diego Public Library to reunite it with its missing mate, which had been in their collection since the 1970s. From the start, Matthew Nye, Special Collections Manager, assured me that the library’s marketing department loved the story and ‘definitely wanted marketing to be involved.’ On June 17, 2025 he even asked me to write the donor’s story in my own words so their team could publish it. I submitted the text and offered full cooperation. Despite months of patience and repeated follow ups, nothing was ever shared. On August 5, 2025, Mr. Nye admitted in writing that he was ‘rather embarrassed by this delay,’ confirmed that marketing had been ‘so excited and touched by the whole story,’ and said he had already escalated it to their supervisor. Still, nothing was done. This library received my donation, my written story, and my trust. They failed to honor every promise. I had intended to donate additional very old books, including volumes with fore edge paintings, but after this experience I am not only hesitant, I am fearful. The photos with this review show me turning the book over to the library. Do not trust their promises. I may be open to updating the review if the library finally honors its commitments. Photos of me turning the donated book over to the San Diego Public Library in June 2025. This image simply documents the donation itself, which the Library later declined to publicize despite written commitments.
