This place is a sit down pizza joint. I went here for the pizza and ended up wishing I had gotten something else. The pizza was good, but was lower quality than I expected for the price. The staff was friendly and the open design of the restaurant allows you to see the brick over and prep areas which is kinda cool.
Huge Pro: They do gluten free. My wife has celiac disease and gluten free is not just a dietary choice, but an allergy. She did not get sick here. They were very understanding and did a great job.
My hawaiian was kinda small for a $14 pizza. I would call it about a medium and gave out about 7 slices. They were good, but not anything special. The pineapple was very thin and I didn't really taste it. The crust was thinner than my wife's (Which is odd for not being gluten free).
WHile I did not eat a salad there, they were constantly bringing them past to other diners and they were massive. Looked really good. Don't go there for the pizza, go there for a salad and/or sandwhich but be prepared to spend about $25-$25 per person...
Read moreThe food is good but a bit overpriced, the coffee is $4.50 for a small cup (bring your own milk,) the waiters have always been attentive and prompt. However, the management is both cheap and insulting.
I’ve been coming to Sammy’s since Jan. 2, 2004, and for the last year have been dining outside with my large German Shepherd. Today I asked for water for my dog, but was brought a container of iced water that was extremely small. The dog’s huge tongue would’ve knocked the ice out, making a dangerous mess on the patio floor. When I asked for a larger container, like the black one the waiter brought me last week, I was told I couldn’t have one, that they’re too expensive. I asked again, because that’s what was given us 6 days ago. The waiter returned with the container, but said “This is the last time.” My only answer after this “first” request, was “And this is the last time I’m coming here.”
Being scolded was unnecessary. There are plenty of dog friendly restaurants...
Read moreAs a native of La Jolla we have been to Sammy's many times and have had good all around experience. On July 31, 2014 I was disappointed with my food. Not what I had in the past and poorly prepared. I returned it back and said NO when waitress asked whether I wanted it changed. I am a cantankerous old man you know.
The unexpected happened. A few minutes later the manager was at our table and accepted my complaint and made a sincere apology. I could not believe my ears or my eyes. The man disarmed me with his sincere and soft smile.
The part which hurt though was the tongue lashing I got from my lovely wife. So the 5 stars is not because I loved it but because I had to endure the tongue lashing. You know what I am taking if you have been married more than 52 years.
So I will gladly go there as long as he is the manager. I am afraid that would be a short while as he will be...
