Sombrero does a great job satisfying my crave for Mexican food. Their menu offers a solid variety of items. I have lived by this location for 10 years, eaten here over 200 times and have tried everything except breakfast. The best items are carne asada fries, chicken hard shell taco and beef chimichanga. Surfing Cali burrito or fries, which were added to the menu in 2023, is another delicious highlight. *Side note about thier carne asada: EXCELLENT. The cut is just right, the meat is tender, juicy and flavorful. If my review was based on carne asada only, I would say 5 stars!
Tortas, enchiladas, tostadas, beans & cheese, are pretty good. The carnitas, fish, adobada amd menudo are not great as I have had much better at other restaurants. They are OK, you might like them, as for me I have been disappointed with these orders.
Drinks: Horchata, Orange Bang amd Pina Colada Bang--SO GOOD!
Their sauce is alright, could be a lot better. Their hot sauce is not hot enough. The chunky salsa is my favorite. Prices are reasonable. The restaurant is clean and spacious, although there is a sewer-ish smell at times, which has improved over the years but I still catch a whiff time to time. I typically get my food to-go anyways.
One added highlight is their Rewards Program! It used to be more generous, but gives you a chance to earn some free food. I give them 5 stars because they have consistently delivered when I need my Mexican food fix. Muchas...
Read moreSo i just came back from the restaurant. The waitress on duty had the nerve to have a conversation with the cook and disrespect me. She called me "pocha" 3 times. She does not know that I am fluent in Spanish. "Pocha" is the most disrespectful work you can call a person of Mexican descent. It is a derogatory term used to call Mexicans who don't speak spanish. I didn't even speak Spanish there. Perhaps, that was the problem . I didn't even know that Spanish was a mandatory requirement thyere. I was so angry and i had to decide what to do. I had such a bad travel day to San Diego that I was afraid any outburst would be maximized due to my travel experience. Also, there is a sign on the door that says you must wear a mask to enter. Two men walked in adn one did not have a mask. She served them and did not require a mask. Essentially, you can consider everything now contaminatied. I am a crisis nurse who works with Covid patients in the ICU. To think it was Sunday and Fathers Day. A traditional day for menudo. I'll be in San Diego for a month assisting one of the local ICUs. It is regretful that staff is disrespectful. Let me say this . The cook saw that I was listiening and did not participate in the conversation. It was just that bad. Don't go here if you are Mexican and don't...
Read moreI’m a regular of sombreros and I love their food but this location always has customer service problems. Today at around 7:00pm the younger girl with highlights was very unprofessional and I don’t think she knows how to work the front. I was waiting in line for such a long time, I then moved forward to maybe get helped. She never acknowledged me. She begin calling about 5 orders while I’m standing there. She never said hi I’ll be right with you or anything that a good worker would do. Also there was another customer that looked as if she had been waiting a long time so she asked the girl if her order was ready and she said yeah it’s been ready and acted as if the customer was the one in the wrong. A good employee would ask someone who looks like she’s been waiting, something along the lines of hey what is your name? Instead she let her food go cold. She also has my food sitting there and called the people she had helped after us. She was very rude and I hope this location finds better employees that are competent enough to understand customer service. Especially because this is the second bad encounter at this location, while the location closer to my house...
