Sorry, I live near here but idk. I've been here 5 or so times over the last 8 years or so. Every time I get food here, I think it tastes bad. It's cold. The flavor is kind of missing a lot of things.
The cups feel dirty, and are deeply worn. The place do not feel completely clean. Like there are flies buzzing around inside. And seeing the organization of the front and back, you can tell it isn't THAT clean.
Maybe I'm not an Ethiopian food kinda guy, but I feel like I could just change the spice balance, make the food more hot, change the portions, and boom. The food could be good. Like many of the items are stew like. How are they lukewarm right when it gets to you? It should be HOT. Otherwise I'm concerned a bit of the food safety.
I can eat every other cuisine. This just never works out for some reason. The food doesn't seem to be very americanized, not that it needs to be. But it definitely seems like something is wrong. Makes it hard to bring a group here. There are no "safe" options for food really.
I'm just not seeing the artistry in the food. Taste or presentation wise. The plating kinda reminds me of a cafeteria. Like the food is just folded up sometimes. Or it's just plopped on the plate.
Sometimes I've gotten my order wrong.
I'm kinda surprised that the reviews for this place have been so high.
Like there are a lot of signs that this place isn't great.
Best pros I've noticed is that this place is different. It's been around for a while. Ethiopian food. And it's one of the cheapest place to eat...
Read moreI asked as nicely as I could for the owner to change his gloves or wash his hands before touching the injera because he doesn’t when he touches the cash register which customers use. I even apologized for asking even tho he was practicing unclean habits. He touches everything including the register then goes and folds the injera for the customers to go orders.
at first the was was understanding, he changed the gloves but he then started all of a sudden aggressively coming to my seat and trying to justify that the screen is sanitized very 15 mins which is a lie and a moot point I sat there 40 mins in total he never once sanitized the screen, and doesn’t matter even if he did it’s still cross contamination if you don’t change the gloves. He asked if I brought it up because he changed me extra for injera which makes no sense.
They play only or Pentecostal religious music only which is also abnormal for an Ethiopian restaurant.
Even after I left he incredibly followed me out the store yelling at me. I couldn’t believe it.
He was once again argumentative and upset that I’d make such a simple request.
He asked why I didn’t say bye to him when I left.
Rather than jaut accept the fact that he made an error he decided to try and berade me call me sensitive and told me something was wrong with me.
It’s tough finding a Ethiopian restaurant that’s authentic while traveling but this place is by far the worst restaurant experience I’ve had.
Awful place....
Read moreI've tried Ethiopian food in Amsterdam before and thought it was mind blowing, especially the Ethiopian bread. The preparation comes close to how Indian entrees are prepared with slow cooking but it's much more mild in terms of spicy flavors. This place has two branches, one in Mission bay and the other in Tenderloin. Went for a satisfying weekend meal to this outlet which is casual, overlooks the road and cozy seating. You order at the counter and pay, they'll bring it to your table. Extremely friendly servers who can help out with what the dishes are. They'll also ask you whether you want separate or shared meal. Food is extremely flavorful and filling so I will definitely go back. Overall, very affordable too, just $32 excluding tips for three and we were full with what we ordered.
Being a vegetarian, I wanted to try everything veggie so went ahead with Veggie Combo and Vegetarian Banatu.
Vegetarian Banatu: it's Injera bread tossed in sauces, veggies and lots of flavors.
Veggie Combo: This basically includes all but one of the entrees listed under the entree section so seemed like a good choice. The dishes were a variety of flavors including lentil, beans, spinach, cauliflower and beet. I liked the beans one the most and the beet one the least. Comes with side of the best injera bread which was my favorite part.
Finally tried the Ethiopian tea which tasted just okay but a good digestive to...
