Been here three times. The fish is absolutely fresh and delicious. Ordered real wasabi and was offered the fake one— felt I was being tested to see if I knew the difference. As a New Yorker, I have tasted plenty of Japanese cuisine and definitely this place is the only authentic sushi restaurant in PR. A bit pricy. I’ve spent on avg $150 per visit while dining alone. And the servings are smaller than usual. I’ve had the sake flight and the non Japanese sake which was surprisingly good. I found the edamame overly salted other than that the rolls and sashimi were comparable and some pieces superior to Manhattan eateries. I had service by ?Phillip ? Owner? Manager? Same gentleman each time—a bit rough around the edges but very knowledgeable and eager to share information. So why 3 stars? Because it’s missing a very important and unique feature of Japanese establishments: the greeting. One is welcomed with smiles and “affection” when you enter— you feel appreciated. I have arrived early each time I visited. Understandingly, the place was empty and yet I was given the worst table each time. The one proximal to the bathroom. The first time, I asked to be seated at different table and ?Phillip responded “I can’t. It might get busy.” No one came while I was there. The second time I didn’t say anything. I tipped less than 20% the last two times for that very reason despite a very attentive service. I am leaving the island in a couple of weeks for good and I’m giving this place another chance. I plan to order the sashimi omakase & shall tip and update stars accordingly. Looking forward to this possibly last visit. Update: Well I just finished sashimi omakase. All pieces of fish were exquisite except I didn’t enjoy the monkfish. But that’s a matter of taste. I also don’t enjoy uní. Of note, I asked no tuna be included since I do not enjoy it. No tuna was served. Oh by the way I was welcomed with a smile-a very nice one at that. Made sure I tipped the right amount and upgraded to five stars. I would recommend: offer rice with sashimi omakase & be patient. The wait is worth...
Read moreWe visited this place hoping to get some great sushi since there are so many good reviews. Unfortunately we must have gone on an off night. The service was lacking, but that's not a big deal, she was by herself dealing with all the other customers and we wernt really in any type of rush.
My main issue (and the reason for the 1-star) was because we ordered the "Lovers deluxe combination" under the Omakase menu. Which is supposed to be "8 pieces sushi, 6 pieces sashimi, 2 maki rolls, chefs choice, 2 miso soups". So we were expecting some type of variety of different fishes/rolls, but when we got our order it was just tuna and salmon prepared different ways (tuna roll, tuna sashimi, tuna sushi, etc). So basically $80 for tuna and salmon prepared in different ways. On top of that some of the fish on that platter just didn't seem fresh so we ate about half the platter, but sent the rest back. We also had some sake and edamame, the sake was good, but the edamame was way too salty.
So just having tuna and salmon wouldn't have been that big of deal except our total bill was $200. It just felt like it was for sure not worth it at all. I understand getting "the freshest fish from the Toyosu Market" has a cost to it, but the experience we had and the quality of the food we had was for sure not worth $200 for us. Maybe it was an off night, but I know that I would not recommend this place to any of my friends.
** Also note that any of the other negative reviews it looks like the owner/manger responds trying to attack the reviewer. I'm not sure whats up with that, but seriously don't go here unless you have no other choice and all the other restaurants are booked up or at capacity.
I've also attached a screenshot of the super salty edamame and the menu. The menu because after i left my review, someone from the restaurant called me saying I was the one mistaken and that the "lovers deluxe" is supposed to be only tuna and salmon, and it was my fault for not knowing that, even though the menu doesn't mention...
Read moreWe have been coming to San Juan Puerto Rico for 11 years now. From the people to the restaurants we have never had to write a poor review. We decided to try ISushi Omakase & Sake Bar.
It’s a basic place more like a strip mall lunch place, but we were coming for the Sushi after seeing positive reviews and amazing pictures of the sushi rolls online. WHICH ANOTHER CUSTOMER MENTIONED IN A POOR REVIEW. Here’s the reason why we gave ISushi Omakase ONE STAR. If the sushi looked anything like it did or even tasted ok we wouldn’t have left any review at all. NOT only is it extremely over priced and a TOURIST PRICED GOUGE, but the rolls were very below average. I can’t believe the place got positive reviews at all.
THATS still OK and it was our decision to try this spot. What motivated this review was the server gave us the check and stated she already added the “TIP IN.” A 20% tip was added in our bill for two adults and two small children. WOW! Our bill was $256.00 with tip added in. We gave $260.00 in cash. Normally we’d just leave and be ok with that, BUT they became very aggressive and did not return to the table. My wife and kids left, and I remained waiting on principle alone.
The Female server came back and said “Sorry If You WANT To WAIT LONGER I’ll SEE IF I CAN GET YOU YOUR $4.00 DOLLARS.
11 years and countless restaurants and local eateries never had an issue.
TOURISTS BEWARE! This place will never last based on their prices, the taste of their food and their...
