I came to this place on a Friday evening looking for something hearty and homie. I've been on the road for about a week, and just wanted a family kind of meal.
Petra hit the spot. There was a line when I arrived, and it was hard to find parking. That's definitely the downside of this location It is street parking pretty much and that can be hit and miss.
They have a kiosk for self-ordering but it didn't have all the choices that the menu has on the board. So halfway through my order I had to discontinue and get back in line. That was quite discouraging.
I jumped back in line did my order, and found a seat. There is nothing particularly incredible about the decor of the restaurant, but had a nice outside dining deck.
Food came quickly, and I was quite surprised by the volume. They also added a very nice fresh pita bread to the mix. That was a good touch.
First bite, good but not incredible. Second bite was a piece of pita and a dip in the hummus. The hummus was a little bland I'd say, but I love all kinds of hummus so I kept eating. Third bite was salad and meat. I did the split tray where I had partial meat and partial grilled vegetables. The grilled vegetables are absolutely dynamite. The meat was good. The hummus remained underwhelming. I've definitely had better hummus. In fact I would call a trader Joe's hummus much better.
At any rate I kept diving in and finished the whole plate. Really nothing to complain about except maybe the hummus and pita. The pita was definitely fresh, but also was a little bit bland. Maybe that's just something I'm not used to.
Overall the experience was positive. It's a great little spot in downtown San Luis Obispo.
So I always ask myself would I go back? The answer is yes. Would I try something else. The answer is also yes. They have a pretty hearty menu so I would like to try some other items. I would love them to spruce up the hummus somehow. But again, overall it was a great meal.
Thanks for being kind hostesses. I'll try...
Read moreMy BF and I were looking for Greek/Mediterranean food and had heard good things, so we got to stop by. They have a small parking area, if it's full you will have to park on the street. It's just north of the downtown area. Upon arriving, we were greeted right away and ordered our food and a couple of beers at the counter. They have several beer choices on tap. After ordering, they gave us our beers and a number. Since it was a nice day, we chose one of the tables out on the small patio area. As we were waiting, I perused their sauces, and decided to try all of the them. Our food came out relatively quickly and was delivered to our table. We shared a combo (chicken and lamb) shawarma platter with hummus, tzatziki sauce, and half rice/half salad. And we also shared a greek feta pizza with half chicken, half gyro meat. As well as a side of hummus and pita bread. We may have had our expectations too high, as we tend to compare Mediterranean food to another location out of town that is super flavorful. We felt the meat was alittle dry and not full of juicy flavorfulness like we have had other places. Actually we felt the whole platter lacked spices. It wasn't bad by any means. And we did eat it. But the food seemed "meh" at best. Their sauces were alright, some we liked better than others but I feel its just a taste preference. Having said that, the Baklava was good and we did enjoy that. Service was with a smile and the staff was very friendly and nice. Not sure we will be back except maybe for...
Read moreI have eaten at Petra's several times, and really enjoyed the food there. Everything I have ordered thus far has been excellent, and the service at the restaurant is always great. I highly recommend this place for anyone in the mood for great Greek food, whether passing through town or as a place to take your lunch break.
That being said, my 1-star rating has everything to do with the delivery driver who nearly caused my to run into him on the freeway. At around 4:40pm today (July 18, 2017), I was on highway 1 heading to the Men's Colony to pick up my wife from work. A few miles before the exit, I saw the delivery driver swerving in and out of traffic behind me, then all of a sudden he cuts within a few feet in from of me with no blinker, causing me to slam my brakes. He then proceeds to tailgate the car in from of him all the way until the exit, where he speeds around the corner toward the Men's Colony. In the parking lot where I pick up my wife, the driver gets out to grab his delivery, and stares me down with a nasty glare.
This is absolutely unacceptable Petra, I beg of you to please do something about this incident. I can't imagine letting something like this go unsettled. The delivery vehicle was a silver Honda car, with CA plates #7TZH653. A picture of the plate and driver is also attached. Thank you very much on advance for your dealings on...
