I arrived at the Quality Suites Downtown San Luis Obiso in San Luis Obispo at 3:15 pm, and went directly to the registration desk to check in. Even though the checkin time is 4 pm, I thought there was a good chance that I would be able to get into my room before then, and maybe get to have a nap after my long drive to get to San Luis Obispo before meeting other people in my group at 4:45 pm.
There was one person in line ahead of me, and I heard the attendent tell him she would check if there were any rooms ready. She glanced at her computer screen for mere seconds and then said no, and said that she would text him as soon as a room became available. He went to find a bathroom, and then I stepped up, and got exactly the same treatment - she said she would check if there were any rooms ready - even though she had just supposedly done that a few seconds ago - and then told me she would text me as soon as a room became available. Also, mysteriously, she asked if I had any pets; I did not, and told her I did not.
There was no text message. At 4 pm, I went back to the desk, and she did not re-check room availability - she just went ahead with the registration. She AGAIN asked me if I had any pets; I said no. She said I would be charged if I had pets. She said it was a non-smoking room, so if I smoked, I would be charged. She said she was just letting me know. I wondered why I was an object of suspicion and distrust; I have NEVER kept pets in a hotel room without informing the registration desk when I checked in. I have NEVER smoked period - not in my entire life.
Honestly, I don't appreciate being treated with suspicion and distrust when I am a guest at a hotel for the first time and with no record of ever having done anything wrong - so, I see no reason to be treated that way, and it naturally causes me to distrust the hotel staff: anyone who assumes no one can be trusted seems to me to be projecting their own dishonest tendencies. I don't believe for one second that they were really checking to see if a room was available before 4 pm; obviously they just aren't considerate enough to make any effort to allow weary travelors to get into a room before the frankly rediculously late check-in time of 4 pm, and they put on a fake show of 'checking', insulting their guests intelligence, because of their profound lack of respect for their guests and their laziness and/or greed (in not hiring enough staff) about getting their rooms clean in a reasonable time frame.
After these baseless verbal attacks on my character and my comfort, I was told that even though I had already paid in full in advance for my two-night stay in order to get a slightly lower rate, I had to pay an additional $40 for breakfast and some list of other things, none of which I had any intention of utilizing. I asked if the $40 charge was required, and she said it was.
The room was clean, but the design was sub-standard. I'm fairly tall, but it was nearly impossible for me to turn the bed's reading light on or off while lying in bed; most people would have to sit up to do this. The electric outlet at the nightstand was built into the horizontal surface of the nightstand, so if anyone spilled a beverage on the nightstand it would immediately become a potential electrical hazard. The only grab-bar for the shower was outside the shower; there was nothing to hand onto while in the shower, nothing to grab hold of if one slipped while in the shower.
The location is inconvenient; it did not appear to be walking distance to anything worthwhile. I had to get in my car and get on the freeway and go to another exit in order to do anything, eat anything, buy anything, see anything.
My advice is, avoid the Quality Suites Downtown San Luis Obispo if at all possible. If you are forced to stay there, be prepared for a distinct lack of hospitality and a level of 'quality' that makes the room rates a...
Read moreMost rooms have been updated, but we still encountered a broken cabinet and slow flowing sink. I think that stuff didn't get redone.
Pros: -Nice sized room/ suite space -Bright sea/pool themed colors -Daughter enjoyed the pool even though for us, the pool water was cold.
Cons: -Room assignment/ Check-in. The check-in clerk did not give us any info about the property- no mention of breakfast, manager's reception, or pool hours. We were staying there nights, so it wasn't just an "in and out" for us. This kid assigned us the room next to the gym, which opens at 5am! We went back down to him and asked for another room. He said we would have to be "in the back". I asked if there was an issue and he said no, he'd just wanted to place us near the pool with the room next to the fitness room, (which wasn't exactly near the pool), and now we'd have to be "in the back". We walked and walked and walked and finally WAY WAY in the back, was our room. It was a bit creepy back there and the guy next door was loud and began his morning at 5am with attending to his personal needs and a blasting tv. Walls are THIN!
The next morning, I went out for a run, and I walked by about 10 empty rooms on my way out of the back corner of the property, so I went to talk to the desk, again. This person was very nice and apologized for the poor choices made by the young employee the previous afternoon! She said she would convey my experience to the manager. She offered me two different better positioned rooms that were available immediately, which I very much appreciated. In the end, we decided to stay put because we did not want to pack up our stuff.
SLO doesn't have the best array of hotel options, and we'd stayed at this Quality Suites a number of years ago so I went with what I knew. However, I think some newer properties are finally coming on the scene, and we'll be giving those a try on...
Read moreI was visiting our student at Cal Poly SLO and enjoyed staying at this hotel. The pool is very nice and I swam every day. I was up on the third floor overlooking the pool which was great. All staff were friendly. I was in a King suite and liked the set up with the new-looking, clean and firm couch, the little fridge and the table and chairs by the front window. You can close the door between the living area and the bedroom so you don't hear the fridge noises. The bed mattress was great, not too soft, I'd say medium. The bathroom had a big shower. There are two sinks, one in the bedroom and one in the living area. Everything was super clean. Breakfast was plentiful with nice choices and tables and chairs to sit outside. My only suggestion would be to have staff walk around the pool area regularly when guests are swimming or in the hot tub to make sure they are following the rules, which are clearly posted. On the Saturday early evening I was swimming, and a loud obnoxious guy came in the pool with a beer bottle and started shouting to other guests wanting to talk about himself. This went on for at least an hour. Everyone suspected he was a bit drunk. Glass is NOT allowed anywhere near the pool area. Nobody dared tell him as they didn't know how he would react. I wish a staff member had been there to tell him. I spoke with other guests who were trying to relax and have some peace and quiet in chairs around the pool and they felt the same way. Perhaps when guests check in, staff could go through all the rules, one by one, to make sure guests are...
