I hadn’t had Layne’s since my college days at Texas A&M. Our family has always been a big Cane’s fan but since they opened a Layne’s in San Marcos, we decided to make the drive from New Braunfels and do a head-to-head taste test. We grabbed our Cane’s to go and made ourselves comfortable in the Layne’s dining area. We were prepared to get some negative feedback for bringing the competitor’s food inside but instead we had the most positive experience. Everyone was extremely friendly, the atmosphere had a great vibe, and the food was outstanding. We tried the regular tenders, the spicy tenders, and a grilled chicken wrap along with the fries and toast. Layne’s won hands down on the chicken fingers and fries. They were seasoned well, the breading had a great texture, and the fries were crispy. The only area that Cane’s had them beat was the toast by a small margin. Layne’s got major bonus points for having a good selection of tasty sauces and also having the option for spicy fingers and a grilled chicken wrap which was delicious. Their honey mustard with the spicy fingers was my favorite combo. Their toast with the gravy was a big hit as well. The sweet tea and lemonade were also on point. We had such a great time and even the die hard Cane’s fans gave better scores to Layne’s. To top it off, they not only had great quality food but you got more bang for your buck. Shout out to Noah for taking time to visit with us and share some Layne’s history. Not to mention the shakes he gave us to try which were outstanding. Overall we had a wonderful experience and can’t wait to go back. Layne’s is worth the 30 minute drive and is our new go-to...
Read moreAs a former student of Texas A&M I spent quite a few late night meals and early mornings at the Original Layne's Chicken in College Station. So I have a pretty good idea of what it is supposed to taste like.
The first thing that is important is the sauce. That's what made Layne's famous and 100x better than Canes. The sauce tastes exactly like it should and has that unique flavor that every college student loves.
The chicken is lightly breaded and fried and the toast is spot on.
The atmosphere is unique to layne's but I will say that since the store is soo new it needs a few years to build up that college town atmosphere. Right now it is so fresh and clean it feels like it would fit better in an urban city then a college town. Perhaps that's what the new owners are going for?
The service is great, but as an Aggie I was a little disappointed that the employees didn't say howdy back when I said it. That's something Layne's in college station always did and it makes it unique and different. Also they staff didn't know the history of Layne's. How can you work there where the history is literally on the wall and not know that the original layne's was from college station?!?
Also didn't find out about the new layne's app until I was sitting down at the table waiting for food. That would be something I would make sure all the employees ask the customers.
Overall this is a great place to go and I will be a...
Read moreWonderful place for some good chicken, in comparison to Cane's it's so much more worth it, in quality of chicken, and price, you save at least 50 cents-3$ when comparing Layne's to Cane's. Layne's has a spicy option, grilled cheese the standard fries/chicken combo, and SHAKES. There is no coleslaw to substitute or worry about. They have their own version of signature sauce, ketchup, multiple sauces to choose from and hot sauce.
Location is better too, with plenty of parking. Rather go here any day of week just for that factor alone. My only problem I have is how bright it is in there, and it lacks alot of color inside, it gives off "hospital waiting room vibes" but at least its hospital room clean as well! They are continously cleaning and making sure everything is in stock. The service is face and they are really nice. Will be coming...
