The food was okay, some of it was good, others were a miss. Starting with the misses, the age tofu was supposed to be served with tempura sauce however this wasn't really the case. At best it was served with a light beef broth rather than a traditional tempura sauce. And by light I do mean quite light, you couldn't taste it at all over the flavor of the tofu. If you want your tofu crispy do not get this dish as the tofu is sitting in the broth when it's served to you, rendering the coating a bit soggy.
The next miss comes in the form of the Unagi Don. This dish costs about $24 however you get maybe 8-10 slices of Unagi (aka eel) arranged in a flower pattern of sorts. For this price this dish is a rip off and not worth the cost. Most unagi dons come with the rice completely covered in a layer of unagi which was not the case here. Even eating the rice generously with each bite of unagi I was still left with at least half a bowl of rice with nothing to eat it with. On top of this, you don't even get a soup to go with it at this price point which is disappointing. In fact, there were no sides provided with the dish. For this same price you could go to the Santa Fe Asian Market and buy an whole eel. At least the eel was moist and heated nicely so there was that.
Now for the good stuff, getting the miso soup was actually quite pleasant. The soup itself had lots of flavor and was really nice on a cool day. My partner got the Tofu Dolsotbop, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The toppings were a plenty and they gave her the option to add the egg in when they brought it tableside. However she did have to ask for the gochujang to be brought out as she was never asked if she wanted it.
As this was our first time there, we haven't had the opportunity to try other menu options however first impressions are that it's over priced. If I were on a date night with my partner at the railyard and we were in the mood for this type of cuisine I might be willing to give it a...
Read moreThis has been one of my favorite spots for years, so writing this review breaks my heart. Unfortunately, the new ownership has me extremely hesitant to recommend Kohnami’s to anyone moving forward. I came in on 5/27 around 5 pm to celebrate my birthday with a small party of three. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt off. Our server immediately made us feel unwelcome, loudly complaining that they had planned to close early at 4 and that our arrival had forced them to stay open. As someone who also works in food service, I understand the frustration — but this level of unprofessionalism was unacceptable. Despite being the only customers in the restaurant, we waited 15–20 minutes to have our order taken. Our drinks were wrong (we asked for two Dr. Peppers and a Coke, received the opposite) and completely flat. Straws were rudely tossed onto the table after we asked for something that wasn’t water. And when we went to pay, we were told our entire ticket had been lost. The environment itself was uncomfortable. The once cozy walls were now plain white, all the original artwork gone. The most uncomfortable part for me, personally, was the complete lack of music. Just echoing silence that made even casual conversation feel awkward. The food was still great as it always has been. But no meal is good enough to justify feeling like an inconvenience just for choosing to dine in. If you’re still craving the food, I’d suggest ordering takeout instead. The quality of the food has always been consistent, but the service we experienced this week would make me absolutely mortified to recommend this place to someone I care about. I felt embarrassed for choosing this restaurant after everything my family...
Read moreI never leave reviews but I was just so disappointed in this place. A few months ago me and my boyfriend came to try it as we have never tried sushi before. We got there around 2:30-3 and got seated in the back. there were only around 3 tables seated in the front so it wasn’t too busy, 2 of them already had their food anyway. I ordered miso soup and it got there pretty quick and then we ordered our sushi. We waited for almost 2 hours and did not receive our food until around 5:00-5:30! We only ordered ONE type of sushi for us to share and it took 2 hours? We were pretty sure our server had just completely forgotten about us or he just didn’t care enough to fix it. He was extremely rude and overall just disrespectful and for the entire 2 hours we were waiting, he completely avoided us. He would walk down the hallway and we would be prepared to ask him how much longer but then he would turn or turn around last minute because he didn’t want to confront us. It was extremely rude, we weren’t offered refills for water or anything. Just completely ignored. Another server had seated another couple in the back around an hour after we were seated and they received their sushi before we even got ours. The sushi itself was pretty good and we both enjoyed it, however the service was terrible and it was really hard to enjoy it when we got treated so terribly. I don’t know if it was a matter of not caring or slight racism but it was just overall extremely bad service. If there was better customer service we would definitely have wanted to come back because the...
