My word, what happened to this menu?
We’re local and have loved this place for the past two years. We went the other day, and I truly hate to say this, but the menu, food, and execution were just awful. I feel guilty even writing that, because we’ve had so many great experiences here, but this visit was a shock.
What used to be a thoughtful Mediterranean menu (done beautifully) has been replaced by burgers and forgettable pizza you could find anywhere on Broughton.
We ordered the mezze platter, and what looked like hummus turned out to be melted butter. It was literally running all over the plate. A ramekin would’ve helped, at the very least. My 14-year-old son and I both ordered what we thought was a lamb gyro. What came out was more like a sad hamburger, and neither of us finished it. And if he doesn’t finish something, you know it’s bad.
Our 11-year-old had the pepperoni pizza, and most of it stayed behind. My wife ordered the Caesar salad with chicken, but the chicken wasn’t even deboned.
I don’t mean for this to sound harsh. My wife and I worked in hospitality for 15 years, and this spot has been one of our favorites in town.
The bartenders are still incredible, the staff is genuinely kind, and the views, those are always perfect. That part hasn’t changed.
But the new menu feels like a completely different restaurant. What we loved was how unique, healthy, and well-executed everything used to be. Right now, it feels like that’s been lost.
We’re hoping it’s just a rough transition with a new chef. We’d love to come back if things find their way again. That’s the...
Read moreBy far most interesting establishment. This is not the best option if you’re out with a large group of friends they make you split the bill evenly no matter who has what. Between the server and Kaleb I don’t know who was worse with their lies and their policy of splitting the bill. They talked and whispered about us and our server got half the order wrong and there was so many things wrong with the fact that personally I don’t think as African Americans we are welcomed in their establishment. Their sly comments and remarks were rude. The hostess even stopped a couple who was joining our party asking were they in the correct place. We were the only African american group to visit the establishment so I hate to make it a race thing so I’ll just say it was poor customer service. They allow two of our guests to leave with paid checks after telling us they can only provide us with one check. Then proceeded to tell us that they can only allow the remainder to be split.
Kaleb as a manager was not truthful nor was he trying to offer a solution that would help us as customers. He then reverted back to saying that all he does is follows the rules he does not make them. I watched my server split my bill before going back to my table to tell my friends that I was in fact allowed to get a separate check.
I have a Facebook group of women over 3000 that I’ve referred this establishment to and I truly regret having done that.
Steve who is the manager was the problem Solver for the most part but still it was definitely not the solution everyone would have liked effort was...
Read moreEDIT: I received a pleasant email from Ms. Jenkins explaining how this is not a usual occurrence at Bar Julian. We spoke on the phone and resolved the issue. We will try dining at Bar Julian again soon. Hopefully, the experience will be better.
Horrible New Years Eve.
Bar Julian advertised a new years eve party at $165 + tax and fees, which came out to about $212. Not bad if they had a good DJ. But no: terrible sound quality, unknown awful music (for a place with more or less 100 people, there were maybe 4 people who danced on the dance floor), no requests taken (people were literally begging to change the music to anything else), DJ was rude to customers, NO COUNTDOWN FOR NYE (we did that ourselves, how sad is that?), DJ unceremoniously stopped right after midnight, before advertised end of party at 1am.
Manager on duty avoided customers. Complaints left and right were dismissed. Even had this lady say “I’m the manager, we’re talking to the DJ, we’re handling it” and then she rudely walked away. When things did not change, we asked for the manager again and she refused to speak to us.
Champagne advertised for new years toast had to be taken from trays yourself instead of served. Not enough staff to make and serve drinks, food was not coming out fast enough to feed the people there. We were looking at empty plates all night.
Overall, horrible event that overpromised, overcharged and underdelivered. Clearly, they were not organized or prepared....
