We all wake up on the wrong side of the bed every once in awhile, groaning with distaste as we pull ourselves out of the warm haven of blankets. Thankfully, there is a solution to the morning pain we regularly face and it takes the form of a bean - a Grumpy Bean, to be exact. The coffee at Grumpy Bean is not like the generic brown liquid of a starbucks, 7/11, or mcdonalds, it has genuine flavor and a mission to lift your morning soul up with energy. Prepare to be greeted and acknowledged by the owners, James & Leila, who will leave you in a better mood than you came in with. A welcome addition to Seattle's coffee scene and my grumpy mornings, I highly recommend stopping by.

The bearded male barista was extremely rude. Since it was my first time, I didn’t know the menu, so when I asked about it, he answered with just the name of the drink, looking like he was really annoyed and didn’t give me any proper response. He wasn’t managing the ingredients properly. He was all smiles and friendly with regulars, but it felt like he was looking down on me because I’m Asian. He was also gossiping and cussing, so I wouldn’t recommend this place to people with kids. I will never come back again either.

Grumpy Bean is employed by the least grumpy people. I always get a doppio macchiato and some sort of pastry and it's always great. Maybe a nitro cold brew when it's hot. James and Leila (the owners) are great people and they set up community events like Cameras & Coffee, Plant Swap, and recently hosting World Cup watch events. It makes this corner of Seattle a little less cold and corporate.

Saw this place on a Reddit list for good coffee in the area and decided to visit this week whilst in Seattle for a conference.

I actually tried to visit a couple days earlier but they had a sign on the door to say they were closing early (12pm) to go on holiday. Where I'm from if you make a decision like that you usually notify your customers on social media/ maps or at the least add a note saying 'sorry'. In this case they didn't.

Why am I leaving a 1 star though? So I finally made it in this morning (8:30) and asked if I could get a nitro cold brew in my flask. The guy who took my order was incredibly rude and said "I can only do that if that thing is clean, unused and hasn't been drunk from today". I wasn't sure where the hostility came from but I responded that it's clean since I wash it every morning. He takes the flask and looks inside and there's about 1 ml of water. We're talking a raindrop amount which obviously is from cleaning it. He hands it back tells me to look inside it and it's obviously not clean and he can't use it. I mentioned it's just a drop of water and he said he doesn't know what it is so he can't pour anything into it.

Anyways he walks away without another word pours it into a cup and puts it on the counter on the other side and doesn't say anything to me.

I'm here on a business trip so I've been tipping 100% at every coffee place I go to since I can expense but this is the first place that got a flat 0 from me.

Let's just say it's quite aptly named Grumpy Bean and the barista is the personification of the store name. With the plethora of coffee shops in the area I will happily walk by this one without stopping.

(The coffee itself was okay, but the price, service and taste of anchorhead just around the corner was superior by a million miles)

Editing to provide a response. There was absolutely no grime in the coffee flask and it was completely clean. But I expect nothing less than the owner lying himself given his response to other reviews here. It was cleaned within 10-15 minutes prior to coming into the store so of course it is to be expected that there is some water since it's not completely dried. Owner seems to insinuate that it was washed last night but no one (especially not me) mentioned that to be the case. I'm not upset at the cup not being used, but the rudeness and hostility towards me, your customer. You can pretend to be a saint but your other reviews paint a clear and...

I went into Grumpy Bean yesterday morning and got myself a Mocha. I’m a barista and love visiting new cafes, normally I’ll just get an espresso for my first visit to a cafe but I had a long commute ahead of me and wanted something to savor during the trip. Location of this cafe was very convenient, it’s located right in front of a bus stop that has many connections. The speed of service made me feel like I’d be confident sneaking in another visit between connections again which is very important. I was extremely satisfied with the Mocha; chocolate wasn’t overpowering, milk texture and microfoam were perfect, latte art was a simple rosetta styled heart but had defined edges and filled up the top of the cup perfectly. Service from the Barista was exactly what I needed. I was welcomed in and the Barista was engaging but I didn’t feel pressured into having a conversation, which was very appreciated since I was still half asleep at the time. The cafe itself was nice: lights weren’t too bright, loved seeing the bracket of the top shops on the wall, and the tables and chairs were clean. Overall a fantastic experience and I’ll be stopping in again, one of the best experiences I’ve had and I’d...
