Today I had the worst moviegoing experience of my life.
To my knowledge, this is the only theater in the greater Seattle area playing Oppenheimer in 70mm. With that, in my opinion, comes a higher level of responsibility on behalf of the theater to provide a top-tier experience for what is arguably the biggest film of the year (Barbie is huge, but is not being shown in specialized formats). This theater failed to provide even a somewhat adequate experience on all fronts. The air conditioning was not functioning in the auditorium, so the room was DISGUSTINGLY hot and humid from the second I walked in until I walked out THREE AND A HALF HOURS LATER.
That would be bad enough, but it gets worse. The one reason for anyone to go specifically to this theater, the 70mm projection, was malfunctioning from the start. The projection was constantly flickering and it was extremely distracting. Halfway through, the entire screen dimmed by about 40-50% and a strobing effect started to occur. The flickering was so intense that I started to worry about it being a health hazard for some. An employee walked out maybe 2/3 of the way through and apologized about the flickering before announcing they would be switching to digital projection for the remainder of the film. This completely ruined the momentum and pace of the film and broke immersion on every level.
The theater is also grotesque, with ancient seats and carpets that have likely watched entire civilizations rise and fall. Almost no soda options were available, the ice machines werenât functioning, and they were completely out of water bottles. Likely because it was the only thing keeping the unfortunate souls who came before me from dying of heatstroke in auditorium 10.
In this day and age, fewer people are going out to see movies in theaters. Despite this, movies like Oppenheimer still manage to draw crowds due to people like Christopher Nolan making a strong case for his films needing to be experienced on a big screen, or in specialized formats like 70mm. I, like many, waited all year for this film. To have such a ludicrously tortuous experience in almost every possible way is incredibly disappointing and unforgivable. This theater deserves to...
Read moreThe AC wasnât working in the auditorium! We had planned to watch a night movie and relax.
The ticket guy told us that the AC wasnât working and that when we came down, we could ask for another ticket.
We wanted to see Superman, so we went, but left before the end credits rolled in from a really hot and humid Auditorium 9. There were no fans for circulation. People were removing their clothes to sit through it. Iâm not blaming my fellow moviegoers, but this was really uncomfortable for them as well.
Afterwards, we went down to ask for the promised tickets, and the person at the gate was so rude to us. It was a different person than before. They said I could only get the ticket if I had left the movie in the middle. What kind of compensatory policy is that, AMC?
There was absolutely no compensation for that bad experience, and then I had to face the staffâs rude and disrespectful comments for asking for the aforementioned tickets.
I told them this wasnât communicated to us, and it was an extremely disappointing experience overall.
Then they made faces at us and said verbatim, âHonestly, itâs only you guys who have asked for it!â I wonder what were they insinuating!!
P.S. We were actually the first ones who had left the movie hall, so of course we would be the first ones out, but the derogatory comment was offensive, unnecessary and shows the values of that AMC...
Read moreHad the pleasure and privilege of visiting this theater in the unfortunate location of a dead mall in Downtown Seattle. The first trip I took was back in the Fall of '24, where I saw the movie "Saturday Night". One thing I enjoy about AMC movies is that they tend to show a wider variety of pictures compared to other chains like Regal or Century. This AMC in particular has always been very clean and I have not had to wait long for concessions like I have at some other theaters. They have some interesting architecture inside which includes some sort of bar with a timber theme and a strange wooden catwalk that goes over/beside the escalators. The second time I visited this theater I saw an early screening of "Mickey 17" (very good, I recommend seeing). I enjoy these early promotional screening that happen at this theater. I was scared I wasn't going to make it in, but the theater was so big that it fit the long winding line that was filling up the mall floor. I did have a strange experience where my friend and I struck up a conversation with a stranger who used to work at this theater, and he proceeded to tell us that certain people tend to hang around the back staircases that lead up through the mall and can lead into the movie theater, which has resulted in some rather dangerous encounters. Don't take my word for...
