This is honestly one of those reviews you hate to write in a lot of ways. I am a long time (2+ decades) customer of Grand China. I am a big customer...I have 6 people in my immediate family. Beyond that my larger family has been a good customer for 2+ decades and regularly has frequented this restaurant. The original owner and founder of this establishment was an incredibly nice person and tried to run his business the right way. My wife taught his daughter....a very good family. I have continued to frequent this restaurant since his retirement years ago. It got to the point where they knew my name and/or my brothers name would know our name when one of us called in the order for our respective families. When I go I am typically spending 100+ dollars due to the size of our order and my order is almost always exactly the same. I moved from Anderson to the Atlanta area but monthly am in Anderson and try to get food to go for my family. It has been a treat my kids have looked forward to. THAT SAID, the current owner has lost my business. Labor Day weekend, I order $91 of food. Again my same order...cantonese chicken (3), eggrolls (10), beef skewers (3) and a pint of homemade duck sauce. We stopped to grab the food as we headed home to the Atlanta area. Unfortunately upon arriving home we discovered we did not get the cantonese chicken. No big deal, it happens right? I called them to let them know and get my money back for that portion of my order. On this call the lady who answered said I had to bring the food back and they would exchange it. I explained that I live in the Atlanta area and was not going to drive 1hr + back to the store simply to exchange chicken and would just like my money back. I was basically told that I was trying to rip them off and they couldn't do it, that I had to come back. So I called my mother who lives in Anderson and she was kind enough to drive over there to see if they would give her my money back. No...they wouldn't. Again the same accusations. I called again and was told I could speak to the manger on Monday (Labor Day)...so I did (Annie I think was her name). Annie explained it was the owners policy that they basically needed a "dead body" to refund/exchange. I don't know what this means exactly other than perhaps they needed the chicken I didn't eat? I explained who I was, the whole situation and she asked me to hold for about 15 seconds while she "explained" to the owner. She came back on the line to tell me sorry but that was the owners policy. I am sorry...$50.00 won't break me, but I am truly shocked they did not make this right and instead insisted that I would have to drive back to Anderson from Atlanta to exchange my order. I was truly ticked by the accusations that I was somehow trying to steal from them. Insulting. No Customer Service, especially to a loyal and good customer. I am sorry but there are other options. If this is how they conduct business, I don't expect them to last under this...
Read moreI have never had a bad experience at Grand China, which is why I drive 40 miles to eat here. I get the same exact dish every single time....Pecan Shrimp. Toccoa GA doesn't have a restaurant that offers this dish, close but no comparison to this delicious dish. So we all ordered our meals. One Cantonese chicken, two egg rolls, three egg drop soups, and two pecan shrimp, two teas and one water with lemon. The waitress, who was very nice.....to begin with, brought out our soup and drinks, then sat down another table who she began talking to. I had asked for more lemon for my water, but she didn't return. The other waitress came over to refill the teas so I asked her for the lemon and some more noodles for our soup. There were three soups and they gave us one bowl of crunchy noodles. She said no not until we ate all of the ones on the table because SHE would be charged for them not us. Hmm well that started my meal off terrible. The first waitress brought out dishes out, and they were pretty and looked appealing, as always, but we were brought pecan chicken not pecan SHRIMP. The waitress said you ordered that. Well all these years of patronizing this establishment from Toccoa GA for the only dish I've EVER eaten, I told her no I didn't order that. She said "do you want it?" No I don't, my daughter will eat hers, but not me, I don't eat chicken at Chinese, never have. So she brought out my pecan shrimp and it was very good as ALWAYS and presented beautifully on the plate. Take away this LAST visit, we will never go back. I mean the 15.99 pecan shrimp doesn't come with soup nor egg rolls, PLUS you as a table of three with three bowls of soup must clean up one thing before you can get another? Who are the trying to be? The service was mediocre when we went in, but after the screw up was terrible. I had to do without my water, and when it was time to go the waitresses PLUS lady from kitchen came out walked around and left us to wait for our check about ten minutes. Daughter and I went out and left hubby to pay. He said he didn't leave a tip and he didn't come enough to worry about it. I on the other hand have for years, but not anymore. Food great, atmosphere wonderful and quiet, service slow and definitely not good this visit which will be my last one. I'll put pictures on of the shrimp and chicken. Total bill just...
Read moreOn Saturday, March 9th. I called this establishment. And it was a young gentleman answered, I asked for egg drop soup, with no egg he said no yolk. I said yeah can you do that he said yes. I went to pick it up. It was a little yellow but I can see through it. I am on A liquid diet. Because I’m having surgery next week. So today March 11 Monday. I called to order the same thing. When I returned home. The soup was milky like yolk and it was dark yellow. I can’t see through it. So I called them and tell them it’s wrong. So I go back and I explain to them what I got on Saturday. So the older lady and the manager told me that it’s food coloring and it won’t do me no harm. I have to be careful what I put in my body because of my surgery next week. Then they proceeded to bring out the soup that they gave me and another soup broth. I tasted the broth I said I can take that one, it was dark and it was a chicken broth. But she was so upset still yelling at me. Tell me to take my soup and get out. Both the older lady and the manager. It was unnecessary to treat me like that. the older lady and the manager were yelling at me in front of customers. And one gentleman recorded our interactions which he sent to me. I never been so embarrassed in my life. If something you ordered is not to your liking, don’t take it back because they’re going to accuse you of being stupid and not knowing about their culture and the texture of their food. This was wrong on so many levels.. I never heard of a hostess yelling at me a customer because I wanted a different soup. That’s all it was. And she’s proceeded to argue with a customer....
