My Dad was in town & we decided to go eat at Black Bear for dinner prior to our concert nearby. This was at 5pm and only 2 other tables had customers. We were seated right away but then we waited for a server. Someone came by & didn't say a word & left. About 10 minutes later a guy came by & said "Well, I guess I'll be your server today" WOW! That should have been our que to get up and walk out. Don't start off with an attitude. So our server Barry took our dink order & took a while to get 2 iced teas & a water. About 10 minutes later came by to take our order & then proceeded to say after we asked what the soup of the day was & he had said some sort of beef soup but I wouldn't recommend it, oh and we just served the last cup. At 5pm your out of soup?! Anyways, I ordered the the small chicken fried steak & added the salad with the biscuit. After sitting and waiting for a bit, the other 2 people in our party got their salads and mine was not served thinking he'd go back and get mine. He came around and asked about mine & he said it doesn't come with the small chicken fried steak meal. Uh, I added it to my order & asked for honey mustard. So when my salad came out it was plain with no dressing & he says oh we don't have what you wanted. I then asked for oil & vinegar, he comes out with a paper cup of vinegar but no oil. 10 minutes later he comes out with what looks like cooking oil that once again was poured into a paper cup. Finally when our meal comes out all 3 we're like warm, no butter or sour cream was provided. We had to ask for that too. And here we go, only 2 biscuits come out instead of 3. Asked Barry where the 3rd one was and says mine didn't come with it. By this point all 3 of of us are just beyond done with the laziness of this server named Barry. When we got our check we took it up the the hostess to process it for us due to not having the time nor the patience to wait for Barry to do his job. And NO we absolutely we're not going to give Barry any extra due to no effort whatsoever on his part. Needless to say if you act like you don't care or don't want to be there then just Don't! Every patron that came in after us had looked very frustrated & upset too. We really hope you have an actual manager that will take care of this situation and not just say we're sorry about blah, blah blah..... We've been to Blackbear restaurants in different states and never had any issues. The 1 in Katy (on a weekend to let y'all know) & they were exceptional from beginning to end. Hopefully y'all will seriously take this to heart and actually do something about it. This location in Sugarland needs a Lot of help...
Read moreWe enjoyed our first time brunching at Black Bear Diner! Walking in, the ambiance was cozy and warm, with thoughtful decorations of bears sprinkled around the restaurant. The soft 90s- early 2000s music playing in the background was pleasant and not too loud. Even though the diner was busy on this particular Friday around brunch time, our waitress, Miss Sharon, was lovely and made sure to check in on us frequently (around 3-4 times) while we enjoyed our meal. She recommended her favorites on the menu, helping us choose our dishes easier. Food wise, we found the dishes with both savory and sweet to be the most enjoyable to eat because there was a larger variety in flavor. The French toast dishes turned out to be a bit sweet, starchy, and repetitive for our taste, so we wished we had more balance of savory on the plate. We ordered the Stuffed Blackberry Toast ($12.65), Build-Your-Own ($12.76), Bob’s Big Bear Burger ($13.99), and Classic French toast ($10.71). All these dishes had similar prices, and for the portion, we’d say it was definitely worth the price! The presentation of the plate was neat and the little printed bear paws on the plate enhanced our dining experience. Would we come back again? Definitely, yes! As we said earlier, we loved the service and overall environment of Black Bear Diner! The only thing we’d do differently is try different plates with a larger variety of sweet and savory instead of only sticking to the sweet, as we feel like it’ll improve our meal experience. Would recommend this place to anyone looking to enjoy a chill and laid-back meal with...
Read moreMy recent visit to Black Bear Diner in Sugar Land for lunch was unfortunately disappointing. While the food itself was good, with generous portions and fair prices, the overall experience left much to be desired.
Upon arrival, it took about 5-15 minutes for a server to introduce themselves and take drink orders. The delay was frustrating but nothing compared to the 40-45 minutes we waited for our food after being seated. When we inquired, the staff mentioned a shift change, which might explain some of the issues, but it didn’t justify the visible lack of organization.
Throughout our time there, we counted 10-12 tables full of dirty dishes that no one seemed in a rush to clean. Staff members walked past these tables repeatedly without addressing them, creating an impression of carelessness. This lack of attention extended to the overall cleanliness of the restaurant — the floors looked dirty, and even our table didn’t feel properly cleaned.
The atmosphere was fine but didn’t compensate for the noticeable neglect in maintenance and service. It’s disappointing to see so many employees visibly working yet not addressing these glaring issues.
While the food was the redeeming factor, it’s hard to enjoy a meal when the environment feels unclean and service is lackluster. If Black Bear Diner wants to maintain its reputation for good food, it’s imperative they improve their service standards and cleanliness. Unfortunately, this visit didn’t live up to expectations, and it may be a while before I...
