I was disappointed about the visit for a number of reasons and the major issue was service.
The guy who was serving us was inattentive, we got our orders in 30 minutes after being seated. The menu said we were only allowed 2 hours of seating and we wasted 1/4 of it waiting for someone to take our order. The food came out after 15 mins or so. Meat was bland and while we wanted to ask for some sauce, nobody was checking in with us so we had to get hold of some random waiter and this is how the conversation went; Me: do you guys have any sauce to go with the meat? Waiter: yes (Silent) Me: can we have some sauce please? So off she went, doesn't return for the next 15 minutes, we get hold of the original waiter who is for some reason 'too busy' to serve us but is attentive, throwing jokes at other tables. I asked him again about the sauce and he retorts annoyed 'what sauce? We have so many sauces.' The menu never explained what sauces they had so we had to ask what they had. When we wanted to order a second round since this is an all you can eat restaurant, the waiter is MIA. Even when he took our second order, the food never came. We were so tired and disappointed at that point and asked our bill and talked briefly to someone who looked like the manager. After the waiter and the manager talked for a while, the waiter came back, apologizing and giving me the bill. When it was time for me to write out the tip, he was breathing down my neck to make sure I tip him. I felt he was treating us differently because we were Asian and thought how funny it was to meet someone who is potentially a racist at a Korean restaurant as a waiter. Other Asians served by other waiters seemed to get their food fine.
The food was also subpar. I had low expectations based on what my Asian friends had told me about their experience. Unfortunately, they weren't wrong. As a Korean, this place does not provide the authentic korean bbq experience. They have funny menus like chicken bulgogi (bulgogi is beef or pork, never chicken) and korean teriyaki chicken (teriyaki is japanese). They have other menues influenced by chinese cuisine, which is a bummer since the restaurant claims to serve korean food. The sauces are also very bland and not korean. Water diluted ssamjang was interesting. They don't serve the usual side dishes like pachae or kimchi or garlic. I felt this restaurant is trying to seem exotic and hip using the 'korean' in their name but not venturous or educated enough to serve the 'real' Korean experience.
If you are to visit, I recommend galbi, pancake, and kimchi stew and sweet and spicy chicken. They were the closest to the original and the tastiest in the menu. Others were either too bland or had no cultural identity. I don't think I'll be...
Read moreThe food was good, nothing crazy, but the service alone makes me want to go back. I was having a troubling time with my marriage, and my waiter, Matt, gave me incredible advice. My wife is Polynesian and often prays to the god of the volcano, who is supposed to save their island and bring salvation to their people from the oppressors who claimed their land. I told Matt about this, and he suggested that contacting the god would make my wife love me again. We went on a 17-day expedition (surprised his boss allowed him to spend this much time on one table, but that’s just the kind of waiting experience you get from Matthew). The expedition took us through various islands, following up on loose leads we got through locals on how to contact the god. After many restless days, we were able to find a shaman who claimed he knew of an ancient place used by the first of their people to contact the god. After another 3 days of hiking, we were able to locate the ancient temple; however, it required an offering to enter. The god apparently was a big fan of Korean short rib, which Matthew, being an excellent Korean BBQ waiter, carried on him. This offering was accepted, and we were granted access to the temple. In order for the god to grant wishes, he required the blood of a virgin, which Matthew was able to acquire within 20 minutes despite being 50 miles from any civilization. Using our wish, we were able to beg the god to step in and grant my wife’s people their rightful claim to the land they had spent many generations on. The god informed us he would send an eruption of the volcanoes to smite the oppressors, and Matthew quickly went and informed my wife’s people of the incoming catastrophic event. With this foresight from Matt, my wife's people were able to flee from the eruption and survive. I went back to my home excited to tell my wife the news; however, I was not greeted with the response I expected. Instead, she complained to me because I was supposed to pick our daughter up from soccer practice. She spent 5 hours waiting for me to come and eventually called my wife and got picked up after she finished work. My wife told me that I prioritize the wrong things and that she and her family haven’t been to the island since the 80s. Although Matt’s advice did not work out how I thought it would, I appreciate all that he did, and although I lost a wife, I know I gained a...
Read moreWhen we first entered none of the 4 people at the host podium seemed super interested in us. The waiting area floor was really dirty with lots of debris like gum wrappers, tissues, wrappers, and just seemingly straight up dirt. We waited about 40 minutes for a table after being told 20 but it didn't seem super busy. Most of the food was not very good and mostly bland. Fortunately they gave us some salt to dip our finger tips in as the only seasoning and 3 very small bowls of sauces (maybe the size of a banana slice each in diameter) that were never refilled that we were supposed to share between 4 adults. The service was painfully slow and inexperienced. We ordered four drinks and they did not have the items for two of them (one of each cocktail on the menu). The bartender chose to replace juices with random substitutions for the missing items and didn't say anything until we tried them and asked. I'm talking they replaced passionfruit with mango. They did not remove the drinks from the bill. The server did not turn the burner on when we sat down and didn't have it iced, cleaned, or a grill on it. We had to sit there awkwardly moving out of the way while all the prep work was going on and when the fire was finally lit they were setting the meats down just a few moments later. It was the only thing that was fast all night. The sides of the plates are way too low with the amount of liquid on the raw meats when they come out. Sloshing onto the tables, our utensils, and drinks when the very obviously new and overwhelmed server can't hold the tray steady to put anything down on the way too small tables. I had to help them and hold the tray for them multiple times. They were covering too many tables and rarely came back so our all you can eat was two small cuts of meat each and 3 sides total. The two appetizers we ordered came so late we were basically done eating. The spring rolls were hot when they arrived at the end of the meal so I assume they just forgot to make them but tasted cooked from frozen. It was a bummer we had to ask about them 4 times just to get those. It really was the cherry on top of a bad...
