They get 4 stars from me because they have such a huge variety of buns, desserts, and toasts. I just wish they had more drink options and friendlier service. Otherwise, it would have been a 5 star review.
I think the highlight of my visit was that amazing homemade French toast. It was so delicious!!! I'd get that again and again. It had everything you could want in French toast with the exception of syrup. This one didn't need any syrup at all. It had raisins and condensed milk in between the layers. It was a good quality and an even better price. Just under $3. Yes, the perfect breakfast item and definitely a popular one. I was there at 9:45 am, and there were slices already taken from the case. The toast I had was still warm. It was perfect. The Hong Kong milk tea was a good choice to go along with it. It's given to you unsweetened, which was fine with me. You have to add your own sugar if you want it to be sweet.
It's like most Asian bakeries in that you get a tray with your tray paper. Grab a pair of tongs and use them to serve yourself. There are tons of savory and sweet options to choose from in the cases. I was there for a quick breakfast snack. I saw various milk toast options that are prepackaged but are definitely fresh. I almost bought some to take home with me. There are cakes, cookies, puddings, and so much more. I just wish they had more drink options but they do have coffee and tea.
The service was efficient but could be friendlier. The paper plates are super small. You'll only get one if you ask for it. If you want to share an item with a friend, then it can get messy trying to cut it up on that tiny little plate. They do place the toast in an individual sized paper bag when checking out. It allows you to eat it out of the bag like a fast food burger. It's just not good for sharing.
I didn't like that the buns are not prewrapped individually like another bakery near me. I actually prefer it that way, but I can see why it's not done that way. The plastic bag would probably not allow the French toast to stay crispy on the outside. I guess it's similar for other bakery items. All in all, it was a good visit. I'd...
Read moreWe drive from very far away just to come by the Japanese desserts. The owner is extremely rude, very unfriendly, never smiles or even says hello or even welcomes her customers. Never once have we were said a thank you, have a nice day or even we appreciate your business. It's like you have to communicate everything with them because they never speak to you..We buy a lot of their products every time we go into her bakery and spend a lot of money to be treated as if we are not appreciated at all. Not only is the owner very rude and unprofessional, but her other staff behind the register as well. They never say hello, may I help you, or even if you have any questions let us know. The very first time we came here, we asked to try samples of a couple of their items, and she barely could speak English to tell me that they didn't have any samples which is not good when you have a bakery, and you should have samples to offer your customers. As far as the products I recommend as far as the service I give it a zero. I don't understand why people have to be miserable especially the owner and the people that work for her instead of having excellent customer service etiquette. They really need to be trained and customer service as that should be their number one priority. The windows could be cleaned as well, they have handprints all over and does not look clean when entering. Very poor business ethic, they really desperately need help with customer service or they will be losing a lot of customers. We don't appreciate being treated the way we are treated at this bakery. You treat your customers the way you want to be treated and better. This is your reputation, as the way you treat your customers, and your customers will share their experiences as we are with our friends and family. Sweet buns, you need to do a lot of improvements with your customer service. Not appreciating your customers is not...
Read moreWhen Sweet Buns first opened in Tampa, I was ecstatic! Their bread is soft, sweet, and delicious. It reminds me of the bakery chain in Beijing, Wei Duo Mei - which I miss dearly - since I have not been able to visit Beijing again. However, one time I bought a loaf of Coconut Bread and the very next day - before I was able to consume some of it - it turned sticky and smelled spoiled. There is no Expiry Date stamped on the wrapper, but it led me to conclude that they sell "old" products that might have been sitting there for days!
The staff is NOT friendly at all. But you come to expect this from certain Asian-run stores. I think they don't like to speak English, so they almost purposely avoid eye contacts, much less friendly conversation (not required); but heaven forbid...if you ever have to ASK something, you will be met with cold, short-ended answers!
Recently, they raised all their prices by 30%. That would be reasonable, considering commodity prices are up - although their products have been expensive all along. What disgusts me is that they reduced the fillings in their bread (even before the price increase.) So, for a Baked Pork Char-Siu Bun about 5" in Diameter, you get maybe one tablespoon of fillings. Basically, you are paying for flour, sugar, yeast, eggs, milk at 30% higher. But in exchange, you get 70% reduction in fillings. Now go figure!
I hope they stay in business. What they are selling are really non-essentials. I mean, you can buy bread at the regular supermarkets so you do not need to buy bread at Sweet Buns. Maybe a little smile (even when faked) could keep some customers happy...
