I’m an Army Veteran and new to the Houston and surrounding area. I’ve been here for a little over two years. Until I met my husband, I had never been to The Rose. When I met my husband, I started going to The Rose with my best friend for girls’ nights, because my now-husband has worked there for some time. My best friend and I wanted a safe, fun place to go and dance and have adult beverages. We have enjoyed every experience we’ve had there.
Recently, the establishment altered its tattoo policy to be more vigilant about possible offensive, criminal and/or gang/prison affiliated tattoos. The establishment wants to and does its best to ensure that none of their guests feel discriminated against in any case of someone coming in with offensive tattoos.
My husband informed me of the policy change, which excludes entry, on a case by case basis, for guests who have face, throat, neck and hand tattoos or other visible tattoos that may be offensive or elude to criminal, gang or prison activities. I asked him if i would be able to continue to frequent the establishment, because I have face, throat, hand, neck and head tattoos. He asked me to allow his management team to make that decision. I respect my husband and his employer, so I was happy to allow them to look at my tattoos.
After my husband’s management took a closer look at my tattoos, identified that none of my face, throat, hand, neck or head tattoos were offensive or affiliated with criminal, gang or prison activity, I was informed that I would still be allowed to frequent the establishment.
As someone who has studied law and ethics, I am fully aware of a private business’s right to choose to enforce certain dress codes and other rules and guidelines to protect the community they are serving and allowing to frequent their establishment.
Although I have been given the opportunity to continue to frequent The Rose, I would not be upset if I could not. I respect the owners, management, staff, security and my husband enough to comply with any requirements and/or requests made by the establishment to ensure the safety and enjoyment of their guests. I would never compromise my husband’s employment or the other guests by failing to comply with the requirements and/or requests of a privately-owned business.
I’m grateful for a fun, safe place to go to spend time with my best friend and see my husband. And, I’m grateful to the owners, management and staff for allowing me to continue to frequent the...

Last night, I went out with friends and we started at Mahoney’s. At some point, I mentioned I’d never been to The Rose Rooftop & Restaurant, so we decided to check it out. Before we went, my friend warned me, saying, “Be careful, they like to overcharge for drinks or automatically add a tip. Always ask for a receipt before tipping.”
She shared that the last time she went, they called them out on it, and her friend was kicked out under the excuse that he was drunk, when he wasn’t.
So we go to Rose Rooftop, and I order a drink. I ask the bartender for a receipt and she tells me, “We don’t have paper receipts.” Since I had no way of knowing if a tip was already included, and I’m a good tipper! I didn’t leave a tip. All she had to do was show me a receipt.
Then my friend orders drinks from a different bartender. Her total should’ve been $40, but they charged her $60, and again, refused to give her a receipt. We were annoyed, but decided to shake it off and enjoy the music.
Later, I go back and order three drinks. I ask the bartender how much each drink is, she says $16. I told her they were $12 earlier, with her ( pointing at the other bartender), so I get in line with the bartender who charged $12. Then I notice the one who said $16, walk over to the bartender who charged $12 price and whisper something.
We decide not to buy drinks then a security guard walks up to us and tells us we need to leave. I ask why. My friend says, let me guess, we are too drunk, he responds, yes. She asks, “Do we look drunk?” and he said, “yes”.
For the record, we were totally sober and in no way rude. We had one drink each at Mahoney’s. But just like my friend said before… we questioned their sketchy pricing and tipping practices, and suddenly we’re being kicked out.
So yeah, exactly what happened to my friend’s friend before, happened to us too. We were on to them, and they didn’t like that.
Just a little FYI: if you go to Rose Rooftop, watch your receipts (if they’ll even give you one), and don’t be surprised if you get kicked out for calling out...
Read moreWe went here last night for a birthday celebration. There was 8 of us. The waiter was very nice and attentive but didn’t write anything down. He only messed up one of our drink orders. However, all of our food orders were wrong in one or another (mostly the sides for each meal). All the steaks weren’t cooked correctly. One ordered medium rare and the other rare. Both came out well done. Another ordered medium well and it came out rare. One of the meals didn’t come at all and the waiter said that there was an issue with their system so he had to resubmit it. It took over an hour for her to have any kind of food put in front of her. The place was basically empty even though it was 7:30 on a Friday night. The waiter said something to the effect of they weren’t prepared for us to come tonight because there was only 2 reservations. No manager ever came to talk to us even though people at our table were clearly unhappy. There was no offer discount/comp any of the meals/items that were incorrect (at the very least the one who had to wait about an hour and a half for her food). When the waiter came to do the checks, there was no receipt printed out. The waiter selected your food items and held out the card reader to pay. The tip option then popped up where you could select a percentage. The waiter stood there until you selected a tip option. It wasn’t until one of our group asked for a copy of her receipt (which she received after we were all done paying) did we realize that they had already included 20% for each person. And some of our group tipped way over 20% despite all the issues we had dealt with. While we probably should have asked for an itemized breakdown before paying, we had been there for over 2.5 hours at this point. This business practice is completely sketchy in my opinion since there was no breakdown of the bill either paper or electronic shown to us before paying. I won’t be coming back here for many reasons which is disappointing because it’s such a cute place with the rose wall...
