I came here both Saturday and Sunday with two different groups and I will say there’s a lot of good with this restaurant! Saturday my friend and I were sat promptly and the whole process was pretty streamlined. My friend and I ordered: shrimp dumplings, Shumai, gyoza, chicken Yakitori, shrimp tempura, miso soup, dinosaurs roll, Jurassic roll, dragon roll and the rainbow roll. The best items hands down were the dinosaur roll, which we both agreed is the best item that we tried, and the rainbow roll which had a good rice to filling ratio, not too much cucumber, fish was pretty thin and I could see rice through the tuna which is a detriment. Overall I would recommend this roll. The chicken Yakitori was looked unappealing but it was one of the better items the miso soup was also good it had a great presentation and was one of the better miso soups I’ve had . The seaweed was fully rehydrated and it wasn’t salty and it wasn’t boiling hot, perfect temp, although my friend found it a little cold. Now onto the not so good, the dragon roll had way to much cucumber, I couldn’t even taste the eel, it was a little ridiculous. The shrimp dumplings were also a little disappointing they were pretty bland without the sauce, the sauce did make them much better. Lastly my friend and I both had what we will call stomach problems about 30 minutes after eating here, I will note that it wasn’t an issue the next day.
Sunday we got seated but no one checked on us to get our food order for about 20 minutes, the server who did eventually come by couldn’t believe it. The items we got the second day (skipping over repeat items from day 1) were: fried rice, chicken udon, Masago sashimi, salmon roll, Spider-Man roll, orange dragon roll, shrimp tempura roll, crab rangoons, and an eel avocado handroll which was relieved as a normal roll instead of a handroll as requested. The stand out items were the chicken udon which had a really nice glaze to it, the fried rice, the Masago sashimi, the orange dragon roll (which I think had the perfect amount of spicy). Nothing else was particularly bad this time around, I was not a fan of the spider-man roll, a lot of soft-shell crab rolls tend to have a gross aftertaste and while this one wasn’t as pronounced I could still taste it.
Here’s the review of every other item we had during our two trips:
Shumai- fried I prefer steamed, incredibly hot. Overall okay
Pork gyoza- good but very hot, presentation was not as good as miso soup and they were pretty small
Shrimp tempura- good my friend enjoyed them
Masago nigiri- my friend liked it and the presentation was beautiful
Spring roll- good was very hot when it came out had to give a few minutes to cool down before my friend could even touch it. Not their favorite
Jurassic roll-my friend liked it, I felt it was missing something, it just wasn’t quite right for me and it felt like a chore to finish
Salmon roll- the avocado was overpowering I couldn’t really taste the salmon
Overall I would come back, the presentation was beautiful and I liked the variety. The plates and even the chopsticks felt high quality which really improved the experience. I would attribute most of the issues to how new this place was although I am concerned that both my friend and I had an adverse reaction after eating here...
Read moreI will start off by saying i’ve been eating sushi for 20+ years (i learned how to tie my shoes in a sushi restaurant, lol) so i’ve had my share of good and bad sushi. I get nervous to try new places because my dad and I have been going to Osaka Sushi in Henrietta for at least 10 years now and we really liked the AYCE factor compared to other local restaurants. A coworker of mine recommended this place to me and had nothing but good things to say, so my dad and I gave it a shot tonight. And wow, were we thoroughly impressed. The fish was very fresh, the sashimi pieces were decently sized and evenly portioned across the board. The sushi rolls were new and some innovative, but they had the classics as well. The hand rolls were very well stuffed, almost to a point where they were overstuffed - but I will take that over skimpy pieces of fish. The service was very quick and everyone we encountered were very kind and helpful. The restaurant itself was very clean, nicely decorated. The bathroom was also very clean, which I appreciated. The big wow factor for us was the presentation. I have not had a local sushi restaurant pay this much attention to presentation. The sashimi plate was beautiful with its garnish, the rolls were nicely plated and the hand rolls came in little holders that I thought was so simple but so cool. You can really tell they care about what they’re serving and what customers are paying for. The only “complaints”, for lack of better word because really there aren’t any to be had, would be the volume of the music as it was a bit loud for the slow restaurant, and the lack of green tea and red bean ice cream as I really loved those at Osaka 🤣 For only being open for a month, this restaurant has INCREDIBLE potential to thrive. I will definitely be returning and making this my new go to sushi spot. They definitely deserve the business...
Read moreI’ve worked in the food industry my entire life, so I don’t write reviews lightly. But my experience at Sushi Master was frustrating and honestly left a bad taste in my mouth — and not just from the sushi.
I came in for the all-you-can-eat option. My first order was fine — nothing special, but decent enough. However, when I placed my second order, it was clear they were playing games. The rice portions on the sushi were doubled, and the fish was cut in half. It felt like a cheap and shady business tactic, especially when you consider their strict “food waste charge” policy. You can’t promote unlimited sushi and then manipulate the portions to discourage people from eating more. It’s tacky and, in my opinion, unethical.
To make matters worse, they’re also violating NY labor laws. This place has an illegal tip sharing setup. In New York State, tips are only meant for employees who provide direct service to the customer — meaning they actually speak with or serve the guest. The sushi chef never once interacted with me, and yet the servers are required to tip them out a percentage. That’s illegal. Period.
Between the shady food practices and the illegal labor setup, I will not be returning. Sushi Master is more concerned with cutting corners than providing good food or a fair experience for guests and employees. Do better.
