Great, but not fantastic for the price. I had clam chowder and a Harbor salad with some rose for dinner. Clam chowder was pretty tasty but had clams with the shells in it, strange but at least they were exceptionally clean ( no sand/grit ). The shredded chorizo was a nice touch, but the consistency of the chowder was too thick for it to really spread. The chowder was thick, but somehow didn't seem rich despite being well seasoned. ( My guess is it was thickened with corn starch rather than being a proper roux, not complaining, just different strokes. )
Harbor salad was good, but the size of and amount of cucumbers in it were a little large for my preference. Lettuce seemed fresh and the salad had a good flavor, but it was underwhelming.
I sprung for dessert and espresso since the salad portion was so small. The espresso arrived ten minutes before my dessert, which is fine, but not ideal. The apple pie a la mode was unremarkable but clearly prepared carefully with the apple slices in thin layers. May be a personal preference that I enjoy more cinnamon, but the pie didn't have much of a memorable profile. The apple, despite being sliced so thinly seemed to be sort of a monolithic structure in the center of the pie without a lot of seasoning but the apples were cooked through. The ice cream wasn't particularly smooth, but had a great vanilla flavor, one of the few things that stood out in the whole experience.
It's a "cool" place with a menu that likely changes seasonally. It's better than a lot of offerings in other places, but 'meh' in terms of flavors despite what appears to be careful preparation otherwise. I would come back, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again as for the price, I'm certain there are better places within a...
Read moreI came to this location of the Pearl for the first time on Sunday for Brunch for my Father's 63rd birthday :) This place was top notch and awesome. My parents had never been here and were so excited to go for the first time. We made reservations just to be safe for around 1:30pm but the crowd seemed to be mostly gone by that time. We got a nice booth with windows overlooking the patio and the bridge, was super beautiful. The waitress Jenny was so wonderful and welcoming and just on top of it. She immediately asked about any allergies or dietary restrictions and was willing to make changes to dishes to accommodate any needs which was super appreciated. She was great at answering any questions we had about the menu also. My brother has the tavern burger and fries and loved it. Mom had the beet salad, and since the base is all beets Jenny was really nice and said she could have them add some different lettuce or prong mix :) and my Dad had the pork cheek hash which he absolutely loved. I had the grilled cheese which had Brie, pear jam, roasted squash and arugula pesto. When I tell you this is the most divine grilled cheese I have ever had the pleasure of eating I seriously mean it, what a wonderful take on such a classic item!!! And for an appetizer we had old fashioned deviled eggs also really awesome. This is a nice place so it is pricey for dinner but brunch prices aren't really that bad so if you have ever wanted to come in and try it out come at brunch :) thank you Jenny and the Pearl for being great and letting us have a special family...
Read moreWe were a family of 4, celebrating graduation, and chose to sit on the patio at 445pm, and it was hot. The stone table was actually hot to the touch. Our server brought us 4 jars of water without ice, and so we sent him back to get us ice water. The biggest problem of the night was the mahi mahi, which two of us had for $37 each. While the presentation and creativity of the plate was a 4.5 out of 5, and the sauce and sides were delicious, the fish was over cooked and chewy. It was such a bummer that the fish itself wasn’t fresh, and the crust had become hard and chewy because it was over cooked. I didn’t bother to eat the rest of the fish because it was that bad. Our table also had the Cuban sandwich which was good, and the fried chicken which was good. But the appetizers were kind of ordinary. We tried the wrapped dates, the fried square potatoes, and the wings. The potatoes and dates were all very good but lacking in creativity considering the type of restaurant. The quality of the wings was very good, but the sauce on the side was just a simple chile paste sauce and too hot to use as a dipping sauce. Service was poor and very slow, but we didn’t want to fault the restaurant if they are short staffed. We also asked that they not comp the fish, because again we wanted to support the restaurant, but hoped that our review of the dish would allow improvement. Overall, I felt like we tried a lot of different menu items and for $200 for 4, it just wasn’t a great meal. I’d recommend Cap City before I would...
