Where do I begin? I saw this place in several youtube videos so I thought it would be a good place to try the infamous mumbo sauce.
First, the two ladies at the front were not the nicest but that is minor. Next, I order my food. 3 wings and pepper steak combination plate.
I am always observant of what I see in the kitchen. So many wrongs. First, the chicken wings are pre cooked, not made to order. I can deal with that as most Chinese take out is the same. I see shrimp or some type of seafood sitting on a plastic board and a guy in the back cutting it with no gloves. Next I see other workers cooking with no gloves. Again, I try to look over it.
I get my food, chicken wings have no mumbo sauce. I thought that was the point! OK. Get home to finally try this world class sauce. Chicken aside, the sauce is good but I see no different than mild sauce in Chicago, and the windy city is miles ahead. I do like the spice of mumbo sauce. Chicken wings themselves were horrible.
Next, pepper steak. Meal comes with the most dry non tasing egg roll ever. I think it was nothing more but egg roll wrapper and some cabbage. Fried rice, well the lady said it came with bean sprouts and onions, I saw none. And the rice, well it's called fried rice but it's nothing more than rice that has likely been sitting all day long because it was hard and not fresh. And to make matters worse it had zero flavor. On to the pepper steak, actually not too bad. To their credit, the steak was actually chewable unlike most Chinese take out. But way too many peppers and onions, that outweighd the steak. But the severest downfall, it had zero flavor. It was like eating steak and veggies with gravy from dollar tree.
Severely disappointed but it is what it is. Perhaps I went to the wrong place but this was a horrid choice. Sorry for the scathing review but it...
Read moreEveryone was nice when I walked in. The cashier really took their time to make sure my order was correct. I was really hungry when I ordered. I got the Sweet and Sour chicken (Large) and substituted my fried rice for Lo mein for an upcharge. I also got an Egg roll and an order of Crab Rangoons. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was delicious! They were so hot and so fresh. The chicken was cooked golden brown-perfect! My Crab Rangoons filling ratio was nice. Each time I bit into a Rangoon, I tasted crab! They showed alot of love for the Rangoons, as I had a total of 12 (usually only get 8 at most take-out places). I was really surprised on how good the Egg roll was. It was big and juicy, and was seasoned correctly and you could tell right away that it was hand made and not previously frozen. The Lo mein was no doubt the weakest item of the meal. Don't get me wrong the veggies in the noodles and the noodles themselves were perfect. The problem was that they didn't have good seasoning on them. They were prob average at most but I still ate all of the noodles, so that's telling. Overall, I would recommend this establishment. The price was great and for a Chinese take out restaurant it's pretty good.

Read moreI had heard great things about Yum’s wings and their mambo sauce, so during my visit to D.C., I decided to call and inquire if the sauce came with the wings. Unfortunately, my experience with their customer service was beyond disappointing.
The person who answered the phone was incredibly rude from the start. When I tried to ask a simple question, she repeatedly interrupted me, saying, "We don’t do deliver, just come in." I wasn’t even asking about delivery—I was just trying to confirm details about their menu.
I had to call back four times because she kept hanging up on me, each time becoming ruder and more dismissive. By the fourth call, I decided enough was enough. If this is how they treat potential customers, I can only imagine what the in-person experience would be like.
After reading reviews, it seems I’m not the only one who has experienced this unprofessional behavior. For a place that’s supposed to be a D.C. staple, their customer service is abysmal.
Save yourself the frustration and avoid Yum’s. There are plenty of other spots in D.C. where you can enjoy great food without being disrespected. I’ll be spending my...
