Read moreI came with a group of 5 which I should mention I called ahead to ask what the max party would be and was told 5. Unfortunately when we arrived we were told that the tables only sit four and our fifth person would just be given a folding chair to sit on the end of the table and NOT be given their own hot pot burner because again there is only four per table. We were walked through pretty quickly on what their rules were. This was my first time at this establishment, though I have experience with other similar AYCE restaurants where the customer is charged for excess leftover food. We agreed and went about our business and started out meal. We ordered several rounds of meat which by the way was very delicious but at our last order we started to get frequent visits to our table by the wait staff who would reach through and look through each tray to see if it was still full or not. We were reminded several times that excess leftover food would incur a charge and we let the staff know each time that YES WE WERE AWARE. There was a point in time where a man came and looked through our trays again and then rearranged them on the table for some reason. We did indeed end up finishing the food we ordered like we intended when we placed the order to begin with. We truly felt like we were being picked on for some reason. The way the staff would look through the trays and our food started to feel very passive aggressive. We finished our last tray and within seconds our check was at the table which had we not just encountered the previous behavior, I would be happy with the quick service but at that point it felt like we were being rushed out. It's a shame that part of the service was so poor because it overshadowed the rest of the experience for most of us. The aesthetic of the restaurant is great to mention some positive things. The food was great quality and I appreciated how quickly our empty dishes were taken away, I just wish that the persistent reminders and aggressive surveillance didn't happen...
Read moreI recently dined at Shabu Plus Rotary Hot Pot in Chicago, and unfortunately, I had a highly unsatisfactory experience. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this establishment fell short in several aspects.
First and foremost, the service was lacking. The waiter seemed completely clueless about the menu and had little knowledge about the dishes or ingredients. It was frustrating to ask questions and receive vague or incorrect answers.
Moreover, the broth served in the hot pot was a major letdown. It had absolutely no flavor (mushroom and pork broth), making it a bland and uninspiring base for the meal. The whole purpose of a hot pot is to enjoy the rich and aromatic broth, but sadly, that was missing entirely.
Another issue I encountered was the limited options available. The meat provided was marinated to the point of overpowering any natural taste, leaving me with an unpleasant aftertaste. Additionally, the menu itself was restrictive, forcing both myself and my partner to order from the same category and pay more, even though I’ve a dietary restrictions as a vegetarian. This lack of flexibility is a major inconvenience and undermines the concept of "all you can eat."
While the idea of a rotating hot pot is intriguing, the execution at Shabu fell flat. The food lacked any semblance of flavor and left much to be desired. To make matters worse, the sauce bar offered a disappointingly minimal selection, lacking the variety one would expect from a Chicago hot pot establishment.
Overall, I cannot recommend Shabra Plus Rotary Hot Pot. With an uninformed waiter, tasteless broth, limited options, and underwhelming sauce bar, this dining experience left me with a sense of dissatisfaction. Save your time and money by seeking out other hot pot restaurants in Chicago that provide a more enjoyable and...
