Headed to Ocean Sushi at happy hour and really enjoyed the deals! The happy hour menu runs a couple of times a day and we ended up ordering all of our dinner from it! And nothing is happy hour sized. It is all full-size menu items. It was fairly quiet when we sat down, but the place was popping by the time that we left. There is parking available as well! They do a lot of To Go orders. Drivers were picking up food every few minutes it seemed. The staff is friendly and must have come by the table at least ten times during service. Water always full and plates cleared when we were done with them.
We started with garlic edamame, yellowtail collar (Kama), and baked mussels. And then got a couple of rolls to round it out. These were the Super Philadelphia and the Dancing Eel. The edamame came out a couple of minutes after ordering and was steaming hot. They were cooked just right and had so much garlic on them. The baked mussels came a bit later and were very good. Cooked very well and was an attractive presentation. The Kama came after the rolls, but this does take time to prepare. It was a really nice size portion and was steaming hot when it came out. Great to pick at when there are a bunch of choices on the table to choose from. The rolls came out and the table looked full at this point. So many good things to choose from. The Super Philadelphia roll was tasty and had a lot of salmon on it. I normally do not choose cream cheese sushi dishes, but this worked well. Very rich in flavors. The Dancing Eel was nicely balanced. Again, a very rich in...
Read moreIt's great to see new management taking over after Sushi Omi and Hikari Sushi. This particular location has served as a sushi place for many years, although it has faced challenges in recent times due to the pandemic. Considering the limited number of sushi establishments in the area, Ocean Sushi stands out as a decent option in West Hollywood.
One notable aspect of Ocean Sushi is the exceptionally friendly staff and their excellent customer service. They are attentive and provide great recommendations. The sushi rolls offered are both flavorful and fresh. However, it's worth mentioning that the size of the sushi rolls is relatively small at $15-$18 compared to other sushi restaurants. As someone who holds high standards for sushi rolls, I believe there are alternative places that offer larger portions at a better price ratio. Therefore, I deduct one star from my rating due to the size of the sushi rolls and price ratio.
Quick tips: Parking can be found within the Crescent Heights Plaza Parking area, including underground parking located at the back of the...
Read moreI have no idea how this place has 4.9 stars at the moment, the sushi quality is awful! We’ve lived in California for nearly a decade and this is one of the worst qualities we have ever experienced.
We came at 6:30pm on a Friday and it was empty, which should have indicated something to us but we thought, hey, maybe this is a hidden gem.
We got 2 rolls and 3 nigiri. The eel on the nigiri was over cooked and chewy, the rice was undercooked, the salmon belly should be buttery soft but was also chewy. One of our rolls came with asparagus inside when it wasn’t listed as an ingredient on the menu, and the other roll was so overstuffed with rice that there was barely room for fish and it was a mess falling apart.
In California overall the quality of fish should be better and it’s a bit shocking when you come across a place where the fish is not of a bare minimum caliber. Although I can appreciate the good service and a no-frills menu, this place has a lot left...
