Tucked into the tranquil Marketplace complex off Elm Street in downtown Westport, Sushi Jin is a striking blend of elegance and approachability. Opened in spring 2025, this stylish yet inviting Japanese eatery has quickly become a local favorite.
Walking into Sushi Jin, you immediately feel the meticulous design and atmosphere. The dining room is long and narrow, with seating available at standard tables, cozy booths, the bar, or the sushi counter. Intricate wooden Kumiko patterns line the walls and ceiling, creating a refined, warm ambiance that elevates the casual‑dining concept.
Sushi Jin’s menu is vast and thoughtfully curated—over ten distinct sections spanning sushi, sashimi, dim sum, and hot dishes. Whether you're here for an elegant omakase or a group-friendly meal with diverse tastes, there’s something for everyone.
Dim Sum & Starters: The rainbow soup dumplings are a standout — vibrant, flavorful, and perfectly portioned. The miso‑glazed black cod, accompanied by butter lettuce wraps, offers a luxurious balance of savory and citrus tones.
Cold Starters & Crudo: Yellowtail jalapeño bursts with brightness and freshness. The Toro tartare with caviar, Fluke crudo, and Tuna tataki offer a sophisticated, delicate palate of flavors.
Signature Rolls: The Bluefin Truffle Roll, featuring tuna, salmon, avocado, chopped toro, truffle, and sauce, is unbelievably rich and aromatic. The Mango Roll with shrimp tempura and avocado is a blissful contrast of texture and sweetness.
For those less keen on raw seafood, there are vegetable rolls, ramen, udon, hibachi dishes, and fried rice—making Sushi Jin a superb option for families or mixed‑preference groups.
Their omakase offerings are impressive: Mini Omakase (6 pieces + roll) at $35, Regular (10 pieces + roll) at $60—delivered with precision and artistry.
Complementing the cuisine is an exceptional sake selection. From fruity Ginjo to umami-rich Junmai and creamy Nigori, the menu showcases at least five distinct varieties. The presentation—pouring sake from a sleek dispenser into colorful glassware—is a memorable and Instagram-ready experience. The general manager, Karma Wangchuk, is especially knowledgable in guiding guests through the sake journey.
Even as a new entrant to the Westport dining scene, Sushi Jin delivers refined, attentive service without being stiff. It’s run by a husband-and-wife team who keep things quietly professional, blending care with efficiency. Customers frequently remark on the fast, polished service, friendly staff, and welcoming vibe.
With many sushi dishes priced between $4–$20, and signature rolls around $18–$22, Sushi Jin offers phenomenal quality at accessible rates. Lunch specials and takeaway options are also available, making it a viable option for both weekday nibblers and weekend celebrants.
Sushi Jin in Westport stands out as a meticulous balance of artistry, flavor, and conviviality. The ambiance feels upscale; the menu is expansive; and the service—gracious yet precise. Whether you're sharing dim sum, savoring premium sashimi, indulging in an omakase, or sipping exquisite sake, the experience remains polished yet welcoming.
A special thank you to Ivette for all the wonderful recommendations and hospitality. We have visited from the hartford area three times in the last month. Each visit just as amazing...
Read moreMy girlfriends and I recently visited Sushi Jin, a new addition to the local sushi scene that's been open for about a month. While the space is beautifully designed and the quality of the fish was undeniably fresh, the overall experience left us frustrated and disappointed.
Despite having a 7:45pm reservation for five, we waited nearly an hour to be seated. The front area was packed with other guests in the same situation, and not a single gesture — no complimentary sake, edamame, or even an apology — was offered. That lack of hospitality set the tone.
Once seated, our server gave us water and then disappeared for 15 minutes. I had to escalate to a manager and ask — in no uncertain terms — for someone who could take our order right away. Fortunately, the new waiter was friendly and responsive, and our apps arrived quickly (though one was missing).
More issues arose with the entrees. One of my friends has celiac disease and had to return her entire order after discovering tempura flakes, which aren't gluten-free. Thankfully, she hadn't taken a bite. Another friend's order was incorrect as well — a near-miss that could've been dangerous had she had a shellfish allergy. Mistakes happen, but in a restaurant that serves raw fish and caters to dietary needs, precision is not optional.
When the bill came, we were shocked that nothing had been comped. No discount for the long wait, no recognition of the gluten mishap or the incorrect rolls — just the full bill for a meal riddled with service issues.
Recommendation: Sushi Jin has a lot of potential, but to thrive in a competitive dining scene in Westport, I’d recommend tightening up front-of-house operations, ensuring all staff are trained on dietary needs, and building in hospitality touchpoints that show guests they’re valued. Most importantly, improve reservation and seating flow — if you’re overbooked, adjust accordingly and keep guests informed. A small gesture like a complimentary appetizer or drink can go a long way in turning a negative first impression into a redemptive one. The foundation is there — but thoughtful execution and guest recovery are key to...
Read moreI have lived in Japan for the last 25 years and we are in New York visiting family. We went to Sushi Jin last night. It. Was. Amazing. (yes, even compared to traditional Japanese sushi!). Every different food we tried was outstanding. The oyster sauce on the wagyu taco is a great contrast to the soft flavorful meat. The Peking Duck Taco had the most interesting mix of flavors that brought out the duck - it is a Must Try. However, I was most impressed with the Yellow Tail Jalapeno dish. The fish falls apart as you pick it up (you can immediately see how soft it is and you begin to expect it will melt in your mouth. Spoiler alert: it does). The sauce on the fish adds a dynamic mix of light spiciness and zesty that highlights the melting fish. The original cocktails were highly enjoyable. We had the Sakura Sangria and the Lychee Martini. Both easy for us to recommend to someone that wants to try a high quality beverage.
You can tell a lot of time went into the design of the restaurant. I was also able to meet the owner who explained some of the ambience: There are custom carved Limestone walls, all the tables came from a single massive slab of wood, and the bathroom walls were hand crafted. Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time. 10 out of 10. ...
