This is my first review I’ve ever left but unfortunately felt it needed to be done. This is the second time in a row we had a VERY disappointing experience here. We don’t go out often and drive a fair bit to get here because it used to be a place we enjoyed for special occasions.
This most recent experience was after sitting down and reviewing the menu for a while before being helped and going to place our orders they then informed us that they ran out of chicken (by 7pm on a Saturday….a large portion of their menu is chicken based). We were asked if we would like to think and order something else. We agreed. When the server came back around a few minutes later we went to place alternate meal options and now we were informed they are also out of brisket (one of the substitutes we were now trying to place). Understanding the restaurant industry a bit this is a little unprofessional for it being a non holiday weekend and not having major menu items available AND not informing customers until they went to order that item. I watched couples come in and sit down and not be immediately informed 70% of their menu was unavailable. They were only told when they were ordering. It felt very deceptive like they were trying to guilt people into business much like how we were not informed of ALL items that were unavailable even after the first time we tried to re-order.
Okay fast forward. We had finally found substitutes we were not necessarily happy with but we made the trip here so we were making the best of it. We placed an appetizer order for something new, “animal style poutine” which was described to us by the server as lots of meats on it…”carnivore”. It eventually came and was topped with an egg and some peppers. Not quite exactly as described to us. Yet another disappointment.
Fast forward again - an order of a side of biscuits was also placed the same time as our actual dinner order (after the first 2 different menu items we wanted were “sold out”…by 7pm). At no point in our visit was this order of biscuits ever delivered to our table.
This quite possibly was the worst restaurant experience we have ever had and it being the 2nd visit in a row that has lead to more frustration than celebration. We will not...
Read moreSat outside and the vibe is great. The tables are really cool and it was the perfect kind of day for outside eating. I had a German friend with me and she was super excited at the menu and commented that it was pretty authentic. The food is very much "eat this and this while you drink and talk." Not like tapas but the food was filling so you wouldn't get as drunk so fast. I had the Käsespätzle and Currywurst while she had the Schnitzel (I forgot what type it was). To me, all of the food had really great flavor and was very well balanced. My friend said the food was very close to what she grew up with in Germany. The easiest way to describe the dishes are as follows: Käsespätzle is SLIGHTLY like Mac and cheese but more complex with different herbs and ingredients. The Currywurst is sausage, cut up in coins with a curry sauce and red onions sprinkled on top. The Schnitzel is actually a cutlet pounded thin, breaded and (I assume) fried, served with a cranberry sauce on the side. I was incredibly happy with every single dish. My little brother got chicken and fries as a kids meal and even the French fries were cooked to perfection and the chicken fingers looked gourmet to the point where I almost wish I ordered what he had. The waitress was also fantastic. I asked her about the beers on offer and she was very knowledgeable and was able to point me to what is probably now my favorite beer and beer company (wild creatures, Cuvée de Keinberg. A sour beer made with cherries. Only lightly sour enough that it can be enjoyed by causual drinkers and with a nice cherry note throughout).
Overall this spot is great. Bring friends and grab the happy hour offerings and drink great beer all night or go and have a filling dinner with an equally...
Read moreInteresting place. We went here because we heard it was good. It has a very unique menu. They are going for the gastropub vibe, and kind of hit it. There were five of us, so we had a broad sample of the food. The menu is a lot of pulled pork and things with waffles. For so many waffle-based dishes, the waffles are kind of bland and dry. But the meat is very tasty and well seasoned and prepared... fried chicken sandwich was nice, the "porque madame" was interesting and flavorful. The sausage gravy bowl was outstanding. Couple other things we got were ho-hum.
They serve water in chilled wine bottles with basically large shot glasses. We were sitting outside and it was hot... it was nice they kept bringing bottles out, but I had to ask for a large glass with ice. Obviously they want to push the (extensive) beer selection.
The service was not the best. The staff seemed - while not unfriendly - decidedly not friendly. More like just going through the motions. The busboys were the most amiable and attentive of the bunch. The food runners dropped and ran before you could really ask for anything. I expect better service at this price point. (and maybe umbrellas on the patio, guys... you can get them from the liquor company on the cheap)
That said, the food might bring me back on a...
