This used to be my favorite place to go no sooner we got down the shore. It's been a generational favorite yearly tradition for 3 generations since back at their original shop on the boards.
We've never had leftovers before bc we'd all down the pies so fast, whether it was in house or for takeout. We wound up getting Pepperoni & plain pies this past week for takeout (Sunday night fireworks). The pepperoni went down as normal while it was still hot & was good but not what it was back in the day. The plain (minus 2 pieces from the 1st night) & the rest of the pepperoni wound up getting trashed.
I don't know if they changed or my pallate did, but it's just not the same to me anymore!
The kicker, which made me come to leave a review was: Sunday when we ordered, I asked if they had any seagulls available bc I was only there for the week & the woman in the back had told me they'd be getting them soon, to check-in with them everyday. I did just that & I don't know if they were getting sick of me or what it was but than the last time I attempted, them man told me they weren't going to be in til around next week. I explained to him I was going home & asked if. I brought down the money & extra for shipping, if they could mail me one. He said no, they're not even able to get 1st dibs on them, they come from a different company. My thing is, they shouldn't get people's hopes up if they don't intend to...
Read moreWhen they are at their best, they make the best pizza I ever tasted. But CONSISTENCY can be an issue. I suspect this might have something to do with the TIME OF DAY and getting their oven temperature just right.
WHEN I GO THERE AROUND DINNER TIME, THE PIZZA IS A 5-STAR DREAM. Crust: cooked to a perfect crisp and the slice will lay firm and horizontal if you hold it out in front of you. Yet this is not a thin crust-style pizza. The crust is multi-textured, starting with a little crunch followed by satisfying chewiness. The flavor is subtly natural and delightful - a nice mix of tomato sweetness and a hint of salt, along with heartiness maintained by the loose flour and slight char from the crust's bottom. (Some critics bash this pizza for not having enough flavor, but I suspect they are the same people you always see reaching for the salt shaker before they've even tasted their dish.)
BUT WHEN I'VE BEEN THERE EARLY IN THE DAY the pizza has been limp, undercooked, and doughey with cheese that breaks off in clumps. An utter disappointment. Nothing like the pizza I had the night before.
IF you go there a little deeper into the day I am confident you will receive the 5-star product described above. And if there is a line outside the door, don't be discouraged. The pizza is worth the wait and the line usually doesn't take all that...
Read moreI Stopped at Sam’s Pizza to eat lunch with my family on vacation. I was impressed with the fast delivery of the pizza and our waitress was very kind. I originally ordered a sub and asked for lettuce tomato mayonnaise. The waitress told me that they did not have lettuce. I said you are out of lettuce or you do not carry lettuce? She said we do not carry lettuce. “We keep it simple” . I asked is this an Italian restaurant? She just gave me this look. I said well never mind and I decided just to order pizza along with the rest of the family. Once the pizza was delivered to our table which was pretty fast I must say I asked for Parmesan cheese. Our waitress once again said we do not have Parmesan cheese. I said are you out of Parmesan cheese or do you not carry it? She said “we like to keep it simple “. So needless to say if you were looking for decent pizza that is served very fast then Sam’s is not a bad place to eat however if you need Parmesan cheese and your Italian this place may not be for you. Overall our experience was OK but needless to say if you were looking for decent pizza that is served very fast then Sam’s is not a bad place to eat, But if I return to New Jersey and I wanted pizza they definitely would not be a place I would eat...
