We were in the area in March 2021 and wanted to grab lunch (Saturday around 12PM) before our timed tickets to the Children's Museum. We stumbled upon Fun Bowl on Google and when our 3 kids heard the words "ramen" they were all for it 100%. The Google reviews looked pretty good and so off we went. The restaurant itself was very nice. Luckily there was an open table available for us outside (as we are still uncomfortable eating inside restaurants especially with our 3 younger kids). The staff had masks on at all times and the restaurant did not look super crowded inside. It was also going to be difficult trying to eat carry out ramen so the outdoor seating worked perfect for us.
We ordered: • Fun Bowl Ramen with Chashu +egg - this was for my 8 year old and he loved it. He didn't really eat all the extra fixings but he slurped up as much of that pork broth as he could get. The chashu was fantastic and nice and fatty. The broth wasn't spicy but very flavorful. We would totally order this one again.
• Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen with Chashu +egg - this was my wife's favorite. It had a very nice pork flavor and the spicy amount was just perfect. The same Chashu as in the other bowls and was fantastic. Totally would order again.
• Spicy Miso Ramen with Chashu +egg - this was for my 11 year old who loves miso and spicy miso hit the spot for him. I though the broth was good but the spicy tonkotsu and chicken paitan was just better. He said he would order it again.
• Chicken Paitan Ramen +egg - this ended up being mine and I was so surprised at how rich and creamy the broth was. I'm always skeptical of chicken broths and would always pick a pork broth over a chicken one but oh my this one was the best chicken based ramen broth I'd ever had. The chicken was okay. I'm pretty sure it was white meat (probably breast meat) but I personally prefer a fattier dark meat but it was still good. The broth had a good amount of what looked like black pepper in it and it was seasoned perfectly. You can believe I downed every last drop.
• Noodles and Broth - this was a kids meal and was for my 5 year old who is still a very picky eater. He ate the ENTIRE thing. He said he really liked it and he would've eaten more. It was just plain noodles in the pork broth (similar broth to the fun bowl ramen but none of the extra fixings). Glad they had this option.
• House Fun Bowl (Poke) - this we actually ordered to go as my wife wanted to try it. We are big fans of poke bowls so we gave it a go. What we didn't realize until we wanted to eat it was that it did not come with any real sauce and that it was extra that you had to pay to get it. Well it was far too late at that point and we should've paid more attention to the menu. It was just an okay poke bowl but that was our own fault. We were visiting on vacation so we didn't have any sauces to add back at the house.
• Taro Bubble Tea - standard taro bubble tea and tasted good. Hits that spot if you are craving taro.
• Lychee Bubble Tea - this surprised us since it came with lychee poppers and there was no mention of that on the menu so the kids all naturally gravitated to this one. It was a little TOO sweet for me.
• Thai Bubble Tea - standard Thai bubble tea. My wife's favorite. It was good as well if you want that Thai tea fix.
• Tempera Cheesecake - this we got on a whim and OMG this is a MUST GET. We would probably go back just to get this item. It's basically a cheesecake slice that they dip and batter with tempera and deep fry. it was just soo amazing. We were so full at that point we only ordered one to share between the 5 of us but i'm sure next time everyone would make sure they each got their own slice. haha.
Overall this was a fantastic restaurant find. All my kids loved it and so did we. I think the rated it as one of the best we tried on our spring break trip. I wish we had a place similar to this back home. If we are ever in the Wilmington area again we will be sure to stop by here to get our ramen/bubble tea fix and especially that...
Read moreMy husband and I had take out from Fun Bowl, we tried to order online but that wasn't available. He ordered when he got there and it was super fast preparation, he only waited about five minutes. We got the Miso Ramen to share, a Fun Bowl, and the Alaskan Bowl. The Miso Ramen was excellent, we chose the Berkshire Pork Belly which was succulent and flavorful. The noodles were perfect, earthy and fresh, very obviously homemade, and delicious. The broth is something I will be craving for again soon! After sharing the Ramen, we moved on to our respective poke bowls. I had the Fun Bowl and chose the Japanese Dressing (wasabi flavor) and sushi rice for my base. It was my first poke bowl with corn although I understand that's a popular addition. Comparatively the serving was smaller than other places but for the same price. The tuna was fresh and tasty. There wasn't much edamame or garnish to speak of (garnish includes flying fish egg, sesame seed, scallion, and shredded Nori.) The mango and cucumber were perfectly ripe, but the avocado was a bit brown on the outside and had not been chopped all the way through. The seaweed salad was very good thankfully, as there was a great deal of it in the bowl. I would order without corn next time as it didn't seem harmonious with the rest of the flavors to me. My husband ate the Alaskan Bowl, he thought all the flavor in the bowl came from the red onion and jalapeno. I believe his exact words were, "that's the hottest jalapeno I've ever tasted!" His bowl didn't have nearly as much seaweed salad as mine did. We'll definitely go back for Ramen and will likely eat poke bowls again, I just hope for more consistency in the ingredient amounts and a nice balance with...
Read moreI used to love coming here, and it’s been a while since I came back, but when I came back today, I never expected the waitress to be rude. As soon as I entered I wasn’t greeted at the door, but I was confused on where to go, I didn’t mind it that much and sat where the waitress told me. While eating, I was asked by the waitress if I was done eating, while clearly eating, and she never asked my friend if she was done eating while she finished. I felt rushed to eat, which didn’t let me truly savor the food, which was pretty good by the way. The second problem with the service was when I was eating while being already handed the bill, I noticed the waitress was pointing at the table my friend and I were at, to a couple which looked like she was indicating when we are done, they can sit there, even when there’s 2 more other tables available, which also made me feel uncomfortable and rushed even more.
I know she can be busy, but I don’t like being treated that I need to rush to eat and rush to leave, I’m the kind of person who likes to...
