S&L’s Diner is now my favorite restaurant in Hanoi, hands down. There are so many great things to write about with this restaurant that it is hard to choose what to begin with.
The staff at S&L Diner are attentive, friendly, and excellent with kids. By that I mean they talk and interact with children in a way that makes them feel important but also keeps the noise level down. While they’re doing this, though, they’re not distracted from patrons when they need their services. The staff do a great job about pacing the meal, checking if you want entrees first or everything together. They also know the size of their portions, and have suggested that we may want to order a bit less as it was unlikely my daughters and I would get through everything (though they are also fine with being overruled if you decide that you’re hungry).
The food is magnificent. I have tried nearly the whole menu and the only thing that has disappointed me has been our inability to choose something quickly and decisively. Everything is served with attention to detail and care and served in a way that is pleasing to the eye and palate. Dishes are flavourful and filling
S&L’s Diner is the perfect place whether you are eating with your family, going out with mates or just want a quiet meal where you can pick anything and be overjoyed with what comes. When I am in the old quarter it is my default choice to go to these days, and even when I am further afield I still regularly recommend it just because the food is that good. Everyone I have taken there has raved about...
Read moreThis was a nice little find in Hanoi. They claim to be Hanoi's only dedicated burger joint, maybe it's true. The Menu is extensive and all American, Mac cheese, wings, ribs , steaks, you name it and it's probably there. I opted for the burger with mushrooms and blue cheese, I was not disappointed, the burger was cooked medium and was pretty good, the bun was excellent as were the fillings, plenty of blue cheese and mushrooms. The staff are friendly and attentive. The atmosphere however I felt let them down a little, the heavy use of red in the décor gave it a stark cafe feel and the music was dreadful, I know they are looking for the American vibe, but 50s music misses the point, they need to be playing more 60s music , that's a bit more upbeat. All-in all an excellent dinner, would recommend. I returned two nights later in great anticipation, sadly this is a tale of two meals , the first (as above, excellent) the second of chicken wings and chilli nachos was a complete let down , over cooked greasy wings and the most bland chilli nachos...
Read moreAmerican food sounded good for a change so we headed on over to S&L's Diner. It's very nice looking inside and appropriately decorated for a restaurant billing itself as an American Diner.
We took a seat and looked at the menu. I picked the Pulled Pork Sandwich, I also ordered a Root Beer Float. My girlfriend ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.
My Pulled Pork Sandwich was pretty good but the pork needed to be pulled a little bit more, there were several big chunks that I had to take out and eat with a fork. The Root Beer Float was a disaster, two sips and I pushed it aside, it was undrinkable. I don't know how you mess up a float, I mean it's just Root Beer and ice cream but the flavor was just off.
My girlfriend said that her chicken sandwich didn't have much flavor and rated it just “So-So”
The service was good but I can't really recommend the place. If you do decide to go, whatever you do don't order the...
