Nestled in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Bún Chả Đắc Kim is more than just a place to eat; it’s a full-on experience. As you step into this bustling little eatery, the first thing you notice is the lively energy. Locals and tourists alike crowd the narrow entrance, jostling for a seat, chatting loudly, and soaking in the aroma of grilled pork wafting through the air. It’s chaotic, it’s noisy, and it’s absolutely wonderful.
The real adventure begins when you’re directed upstairs. With four tight, steep flights of stairs to climb, it feels more like scaling a mountain than entering a restaurant. But don’t let that deter you—the reward at the top is well worth it. Each level is packed with diners hunched over steaming bowls of bún chả, and the clinking of chopsticks and bowls adds to the vibrant atmosphere.
Once you’ve settled into your spot, the magic arrives—but not without some hiccups. The service can be frustratingly slow, especially during peak hours, leaving you anxiously watching the stairs for your food to arrive. To add to the challenge, the tables are often less than spotless, a casualty of the constant turnover of customers and the sheer busyness of the restaurant.
But when the food finally comes, it’s worth the wait. The bún chả is nothing short of spectacular. Smoky, caramelized pork patties and slices of pork belly are served in a sweet-savory broth that’s perfectly balanced. Add in a generous heap of fresh herbs, crunchy pickled veggies, and vermicelli noodles, and you have a dish that’s simple yet utterly delicious.
What makes Bún Chả Đắc Kim special isn’t just the food—it’s the journey to get there and the lively crowd that makes you feel like part of a big family. Whether you’re squeezing past strangers on the stairs or sharing a table with a fellow food enthusiast, the experience is as rich and flavorful as the meal itself.
If you’re in Hanoi, don’t miss this gem. Just pack your patience, brace for a bit of mess, and savor every bite once your...
Read moreI was so excited to try this place, this was actually one of the top places of food we needed to try. I was so disappointed. After our experience I am genuinely surprised this place this many good ratings & is a Michelin restaurant. The portions looked big & we were still semi full from breakfast so we wanted to share 2 portions between to 3 of us. The waitress who sat us immediately said order 3 of these & pointed at the largest combos. We saw the table to the side of us have it & said give us a minute to decide. She then started haggling us to order. We felt pressured said we’re not that hungry. When we ordered 2 she got frustrated & stormed off. We ordered 3 waters bottles with ice & she gave 3 water bottles that were super warm almost hot. She then gave the table next to us 2 cold water bottles. She was extremely rude to us from then on. After couple of minutes later she came back she set down all our food & angrily stared at us for the rest of the time. She would occasionally get up & try to convince passersby’s to come eat & saying it was Michelin star. Unrelated to her our group was talking about something & laughing. She then started an even more intense stare down. We felt super uncomfortable like we weren’t welcomed so we barley touched our food & paid. Before we could even get up she started to inspect our table I’m not sure what she was looking for but she started getting frustrated. So we got up & got ready to leave. We waited on the side for our grab & we saw her picked up the veggies from our table & throw them back into the veggie basket that were for the next customers. The food was okay, the service & hygiene was horrible. I think for bun cha there’s plenty of options in Hanoi that would be able to provide a more professional, comfortable & sanitary dining experience. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately we wanted to leave almost...
Read moreWe had high expectations of this store as it was awarded ‘Michelin selected’. My review is based with this in mind as it is the main advertisement/attraction for the store.
A Michelin selected restaurant should have quality food, skilled cooking and consistent standards. There were lots of fresh herbs, mint, lettuce available with noodles, pho, spring rolls and pork. This is served with cut lemon, garlic and red chilli.
The problem occurs when everyone uses the spoon they put in their mouth to serve their garlic and chilli’ from a communal bowl. The same bowl is served to each customer with repeated people putting their own spoon into the bowl and into their mouth. The same goes for that lovely bowl of fresh salad greens. All the leftovers are put back into a communal bowl and reserved to use for the next customer. Further the workers use their hand to prepare the dishes and clean and clear the tables with no cleaning of hands in between. I watched a woman make spring rolls, pick up a rag, wipe a table, remove the dirty bowls, put the greens back in the big bowl, stick her fingers into the garlic/chilli bowl to pick out and remove food that had fallen in and place it back on the table for the next unsuspecting customer .
I do not believe this is a true reflection of Michelin status as hopefully the selection process would exclude places with poor hygiene. This establishment has absolutely no hygiene. Further the servers are not welcoming or attentive in any way.
If it says Michelin I am looking for Tasty food Clean and professional standards Welcoming service
The dishes may be tasty and made with fresh ingredients but the fact that other people have had the same food on their plate and you are basically eating their leftovers is...
